If there was one good thing about having agents for parents—adoptive parents, whatever—it was the fact that they made enough money to move their daughter—adoptive daughter, whatever—into the nicest apartment complex in the city.
But of course it wasn't a smooth process. Mornica should have expected as much. Agent parent money or not, there were still plenty of people who weren't too keen on having an Octoling move into Flounder Heights. Like this uptight Inkling woman who had been responsible for helping Mornica get all of the paperwork and such settled. She hadn't even been subtle about the fact that she'd stared at Mornica suspiciously as she'd signed the papers, and as they were walking up to the apartment, she'd gone over the rules that Mornica had already agreed to... and some that were probably just made up.
"No peeking in through other apartments' windows. No entering other apartments without the express permission of their residents. No taking things that belong to other residents, especially if they've left them outside."
"Mornica is a good girl. She won't cause any trouble," her mother said. "Right, dear?"
"Mm-hmm," Mornica mumbled without even looking up from her feet. Cod, she just wanted this uptight Inkling to go away so she could get her stuff moved in and lock herself inside...
The uptight Inkling—had she even said her name?—adjusted her wire-rim glasses, still staring at Mornica. "Well, certainly she's aware that if she breaks any of these rules, she will be summarily evicted."
That was a load of kelp. The first offense for most rule-breakers was a fine. But Mornica didn't bother correcting her. It'd only make this situation even more awkward.
Finally, she got the key. Finally, with her parents' help, Mornica got her stuff moved in and unpacked just enough to be livable. Finally, Mornica's parents hugged and kissed her goodbye.
"We love you, dear," her mother said.
"Love you, too." Mornica slid her eyes up to look at her parents and cracked a small smile to show she meant it.
"Call us if you need anything. We're just a few minutes away," her father said.
"Okay."
Mornica waited until they were down the hall to throw her door shut, lean her back against it, and sink to the floor with a relieved sigh. Finally... that was over. She was finally on her own. She was finally not living with her parents anymore. She could finally go a day without hearing their pep talks about true friendship and being herself. She got it—they cared about her and wanted her to be happy. But that was hard when everyone in Inkopolis hated her.
She looked around her new apartment, trying to figure out what to do next. Her computer had been set up in the corner, a few of her books and stuffed animals had been placed on shelves, and her bedroom was already mostly set up. Everything else was still in boxes. Maybe I should unpack those before I get online, she thought. First, though, she wanted to get rid of this headache. She pulled her bobble hat off and ripped the hair tie from her tentacles, finally letting them fall free. She rubbed her scalp. Cod, even though that setup helped keep the stares down, it really did a number on her head sometimes...

Well this was unexpected Cathy thought as she watched Mrs Elison snootily trotting across the ground. Cathy had only ever seen Mrs Elison walk like that when someone new was moving in, and judging by the fact that the apartment next to her own was the only one for sale (it was also the most expensive), Cathy came to the conclusion that she was getting a new neighbour. Cathy quickly grabbed a scrunchie and tied her tentacles back so that she looked as close to an inkling that she could, and began to tidy her apartment. As she was doing this she decided that she would invite whoever it was over for lunch, and she thanked herself for stocking upon food the day before. She pulled on her Octo Goggles in their normal position (wore like Pilot Goggles) and looked her living room over. Yep, looks pretty good she grinned, as she closed the door behind her and locked her apartment.
As she was walking away, she heard Mrs Elison and quickly ducked behind a tree. Boy, did she hate being lectured on responsibility, as if she had been caught sabotaging a wall. She peeked out from her hiding spot, and gasped as she saw Mrs Elison accompanying an octoling to the complex neighbouring her own. Cathy had never seen an octoling her age in Inkopolis before. She immediately wanted to talk to the girl.
She waited until Mrs Elison strolled past, then she ran from her hiding spot to the pricey apartment. She rang the doorbell, and waited patiently for the answer. She couldn't wait to tell the fellow Octarian all about her life.

"GAH!" was the only noise that came from the Octoling before, in an act of self-defense, she transformed into a purple octopus and flopped onto the floor. Suffice it to say, she had not been expecting someone to ring her doorbell at that moment—heck, she hadn't been expecting anyone to ring her doorbell ever! She started to flop around on the floor in a panic. Oh, man, oh, man, what was she supposed to do? Did she answer it? Maybe they wouldn't know she was home. No, wait—she'd just screamed. Of course they knew she was home. Maybe that scream had scared them off and they'd leave her alone. Yeah. Yeah, that'd work. She transformed back into her humanoid form and pressed one eye to the peephole to see if they'd run off. Nope. Of course not. Why would Mornica expect any... wait... The gears in Mornica's head clicked into place. Those eyes. Those tentacles—even though they were tied up, those were definitely octopus tentacles. The girl standing at her door was an Octoling. Mornica had developed several tactics for dealing with Inklings in her life. Most of them involved running away and trying not to be seen. But this... this was new. This was a fellow Octoling. Mornica probably should have felt glad, so why was she still so tense? Everything that could have gone wrong with this encounter rushed through her head all at once: at best, Mornica would stammer out something stupid and make herself look like an idiot in front of this girl. At worst, this girl would turn out to be an Octo Valley spy come to capture her and torture her for "betraying" her species. Oh, man, what was she supposed to do...? Maybe... Maybe answering the door would make her go away. It was polite and proper to answer the door when someone rang the doorbell, and since this girl almost certainly knew that Mornica was home, she probably wouldn't leave until Mornica answered the door. Mornica took a deep breath. Yeah, okay, she would do that. Just a bit, though. Not so much that the girl could get in or anything in case she was a spy. Okay... With a shaky hand, Mornica reached down for the doorknob and sloooowly cracked the door open just enough for her to peek one eye out. Oh, sink her, she hadn't thought of what to say. "Um..." Pffth, yeah, that was a word. "Hi?" That was... better? (( OOC: Cathy I've got no right to complain about post length given how long mine have been. xD ))

"Um...Hi..."
"Hi!" Cathy grinned, "You're the new neighbour, right? What's your name? Mine's Cathy. Cathy Moio. And also, why are you in Inkopolis? I thought I was the only military octoling here. Former military octoling, that is. Are you in the military?"
Cathy stopped bombarding the poor girl with questions, and waited to see if she answered. Cathy hoped that she would, because she desperately wanted to become friends with the octoling.
(Ooc: This one was very short)

Mornica held tighter onto her door as she was bombarded by the girl's speech, feeling like she would be literally blown away by it. Then, her eyes turned huge. Military?! The word "former" and the girl's friendly, bubbly attitude went right over her head—"military" was the only thing that registered. Mornica slammed the door shut, clicked the lock into place, and leaned against the door to (hopefully) prevent it from being kicked open. Shaking from head to toe and without even thinking, in one breath, she blurted out, "I'm not going to Octo Valley, and you can't make me!" She squeezed her eyes shut, prepared for retaliation.

Wham! The door slammed shut on Cathy before she had even started her next batch of questions. What happened? Was it something I said? Then what the girl shouted stopped Cathy. And she did the most unexpected thing. She laughed. She snorted and giggled and whooped and cried. The fact that this girl thought that Cathy was a military spy trying to make her go back to Octo Valley was hilarious to her.
(Ooc: Even shorter. Is there a pattern here?)

There were no threats. There was no banging on her door. There were no weapons being fired. There was just... laughter. Giggling, snorting, whooping, crying laughter. Fear turned into confusion. Why the heck was she laughing? Was this something that Octo Valley soldiers did before they attacked? She'd heard that Octoling soldiers were insane, heartless killers, so it was possible.
Great, now she was being species-ist. And towards her own species!
"I-I'm warning you," Mornica stammered out, "if you try anything, I'll... I'll kick your butt!" Yeah, like she could follow up on that. Mornica probably couldn't fight her way out of a paper bag, let alone against an Octo Valley soldier—she didn't even own any weapons!
(( OOC: I think it's just natural that reaction posts are gonna be shorter than opening posts and the like. ))

The girl's threat didn't frighten Cathy at all. She continued to laugh, until she had no more giggles and snorts left.
"So ironic!" Cathy said more to herself then the girl, "You actually think that I am a military spy! And one looking for octolings living in Inkopolis!"
"You see," Cathy leaned close to the door and lowered her voice down to a whisper, "I ran away from Octo Valley too. So can you stop accusing me of being a snob and maybe open the door?"

Of course her empty threats would be met with more laughter. Anyone could tell from Mornica's nervous voice that she wouldn't stand a fighting chance against anyone in Inkopolis. Then, the girl whispered something into the door:
"You see, I ran away from Octo Valley too."
Finally, two of the words that the girl had said earlier registered in Mornica's head: "former military." So this girl had been in the military but had run away. Mornica felt herself relax a bit... but only a bit. Curiosity began to creep in and try to push the fear away, but the fear fought back. Mornica swallowed a lump in her throat, turned around, and cracked the door open again.
"How—How do I know you're not lying...?" she asked, her voice low.

"How do I know you're not lying?"
"Because a true military octoling wouldn't wear her goggles like this."
Cathy leaned towards the crack of the door that was open, and showed the girl her goggles.
"Besides, if I was from the military, I wouldn't say hello and begin to act friendly! I think that any true soldier would stride up to your door and shout You let me in, you traitor, or I'll break down the door!"
Cathy snorted at this, because she could just imagine one of her former troupe-mates using that voice to bring this octoling back down to the torturous training grounds.
(Ooc: This is getting gooood)

Mornica flinched back at the imitation of a "real" soldier, but the girl's amused snort at her own impression kept Mornica from slamming the door shut—again—and running into her room. What the girl had said was all logical, yeah, and if she really was a well-trained Octo Valley soldier who was after her, she could have easily broken in by now, taken Mornica out, and carried her off, no sweat.
"Well, y-yeah, but... how do I know you're not just... trying to gain my trust and lure me away?" Yeah, that was definitely a possibility. Trained Octoling soldier or not, you would have to be crazy to kidnap someone in the middle of the city in broad daylight, especially when pretty much every citizen owned at least one weapon of some kind.
(( OOC: Definitely an interesting encounter, yeah. xD ))

Cathy sighed playfully. "What does it take to please you?! Fine. You ask me a question that no true military octoling would be able to answer. No questions about your personal details, though, because that's a little too hard."Cathy flexed her fingers. She was determined to prove that she truly had run away.
(Ooc: Let's get this party started )

Wow, this girl was persistent, wasn't she? Most people who had even bothered trying to talk to Mornica would have given up by now, but this girl—Cathy, she'd said her name was Cathy—was still at it. Mornica wasn't sure if that was frightening or impressive. Probably a bit of both.
"Well, I mean..." Mornica mumbled, "if you knew my personal information, that... that would make you an Octo Valley spy. Probably. Uh..."
A new breed of panic began to take root. Oh, sink her, she had no idea what to ask! It wasn't like Mornica was with the times with how much time she spent inside on her computer. Heck, if someone tried to do a test like this on her, she'd probably be mistaken for a spy like she'd always feared! Her skin started to clam up at the thought. She turned her head, looking around her apartment for some form of inspiration. Her eyes fell on the bobble hat that she had tossed to the floor. Bingo! She turned to look at Cathy again as she bent down to blindly reach for it, not wanting to be caught off-guard. After a few awkward seconds, her fingers wrapped around the soft cloth and lifted the hat off the floor. She wrapped her hand around the bottom part of it to hide the logo and held it in front of the crack in the door.
"Who made this hat?"

Listening to the girl's answer, Cathy's face suddenly dropped.
"You had to pick brands! Ok, I can do this..."
Cathy thought and thought. She searched every part of her mind for some reclamation of this. Then it hit her. She remembered going into Cooler Heads looking for some headgear, and she had found a bobble hat much like the one the girl was holding. It had, by chance, been an extremely sunny day, and Cathy had bought the hat because of the brand's name and how it fit so perfectly into her situation.
"SPLASH MOB!" Cathy shouted the two words like a contestant about to win a quiz show. She immediately regretted her decision, because Mrs Elison could have been nearby, and she could have got a huge scolding. Fortunately, the stern woman was somewhere else, and Cathy relaxed again.
"Now do you believe me?"

Mornica wasn't sure how to feel about Cathy's initial reaction. If she was an Octo Valley spy, then her worries about having to name Inkopolis brands meant that... well, she was an Octo Valley spy who didn't know much about Inkopolis. If she wasn't an Octo Valley spy, then that meant that Mornica had asked a stupid question and oh, sink her, she should have asked something different like where a certain obscure computer shop was or—
"SPLASH MOB!"
The shout nearly sent Mornica into her octopus form out of shock again. Instead, she just flinched back at Cathy's boisterous answer. Wow, this girl was loud... which probably meant that if she was a spy, which was looking more and more doubtful by the second, she was a really bad one.
"I..." Did Mornica believe her? She'd been the one to ask the question and get the right answer. It made sense that an Octo Valley spy wouldn't know Inkopolis brands, right? They wouldn't sell to their sworn enemies. "I... guess?" she finally said though it came out more like a question.
