• character species The world of Splatoon is largely inhabited by sea creatures who have evolved over time and migrated to land. In game, the focus was primarily on Inklings and Octolings, humanoid creatures with the ability to shape shift at will from their human forms into their cephalopod forms. In addition, however, several other types of creatures made appearances.
Since we want to focus on giving as much character creation freedom as we can, you're essentially allowed to join with any character you can come up with, so long as it fits into the universe. If you'd rather stick to Inklings and Octolings, that's perfectly fine - but if the idea of creating a character outside of the set spectrum appeals to you instead, go nuts!
[Bear in mind that some of these facts are not found in Splatoon canon - we've adjusted a few things for the sake of continuity and simplicity!]

• INKLINGS Capable of shape shifting into either human form or squid form, Inklings are versatile species with many known abilities. In both human and squid form, they're able to change their ink color at will. Not only that, but Inklings are also capable of altering their skin and eye color. Although, from birth, all Inklings their own unique set of colors. human form In human form, Inklings share an appearance predominantly similar to ordinary humans. Their eyes are bordered by a black mask, and their teeth are occasionally pointed - not unlike a squid's beak. Their hair features two primary tentacles and four secondaries - totaling in 10 limbs, even in human form! As mentioned previously, their tentacle color can be changed at will. This is put to good use in the sport of Turf War! The appearance of their tentacles (length, position, etc.) can also be changed at will. While far more capable in their human forms, Inklings are also more prone to injury. In contrast to their entirely ink-composed counterparts, Inklings in human form are capable of suffering cuts, bruises, and broken bones - although their "bones" aren't quite what you'd expect. Less brittle than human bones, they seldom run the risk of breaking thanks to their resilient nature - after all, they are made of ink, even if it is a solidified and structural sort. More severe injuries take time and healing, and during recovery from direr wounds, Inklings are unable to shift into their squid forms (though injuries this severe are quite uncommon!). However, in human form, mature Inklings are capable of something most avoid - swimming in water. Because their bodies are solid in this form, Inklings don't run the risk of dissolving. Unfortunately, because young Inklings are incapable of assuming human form until they reach their teenage years, most have since developed a fear of attempting and refuse to learn how to swim. Regardless of their aversion to swimming, inklings are perfectly unharmed by rain and water in any of its forms - even if youthful and developing Inklings are inclined to avoid it. SQUID FORM The Inklings' squid form is considerably smaller, and their entire body color depends on the current hue of their ink. Aside from being capable of swimming at high speeds through their own ink, Inklings aren't very formidable in their squid forms. That said, they're profoundly impressive jumpers! In squid form, Inklings are capable of "super jumping" great distances, a skill used excessively in day-to-day life as well as Turf War. In squid form, Inklings become composed entirely out of ink - they're malleable and fluid this way, capable of moving freely through broken surfaces such as grates and bars. It's extremely difficult to injure an Inkling in squid form because of their liquid makeup, and often times, enemy ink is all that'll do the trick. Often, an Inkling will shift into squid form subconsciously in times of comfort or relaxation. Alternatively, Inklings are capable of being startled into their squid form - but, of course, it all depends on the Inkling in question! MATURING During the first ten years of their lives, Inklings experience a lot of change. At birth, they're capable only of assuming squid form, and over the course of the next 10 or so years, young Inklings gradually mature and begin to attain a more humanoid form. Their bodies are not entirely solid during this process and remain mostly ink-composed, so swimming during this time is impossible. It's around the ages 10 - 13 that Inklings gain the ability to shift into their human forms, although the rate of maturity differs depending on each Inkling.

• OCTOLINGS Octolings are similar in many ways to Inklings; from their ability to shape shift into octopuses to super jump and change their appearances at will, they have few differences. Their biology is shockingly alike that of the Inklings', but we'll focus on some of the slight alterations here! HUMAN & octopus FORM Octolings in human form are distinguished by the separated markings around their eyes - they're not connected across the bridge of their nose like Inklings' are, and can vary in color. Their hair features four tentacles, the tops of which are marked by lightly-colored suction cups. Octoling teeth are jagged and sharp, unlike that of their Inkling counterparts. Their octopus form is just what you'd expect - sporting eight limbs, they're also capable of swimming through paths of their own ink! Octolings are capable of super jumping in their octopus forms as well, and they use their ability to slip through broken surfaces - like grates - to travel through the kettles connecting the underground. Octolings mature at the same rate as Inklings, too, and the various stages of this process are nearly identical!

• GETTING SPLATTED Inklings and Octolings are capable of being "splatted", a term used to describe their shift from solid form to ink form. Getting hit with enemy ink is enough to reduce them to a formless puddle, and only after some time can they assume human - or squid/octopus - form once again. In Turf War, spawn points speed this process up considerably, going so far as to return our Inkling friends to the start line. Intense amounts of stress or shock have been known to splat unsuspecting Inklings and Octolings as well, much to their displeasure.
Getting splatted is used as something of a defense mechanism - after all, you can't very well injure a puddle of ink. However, being reduced to ink form cannot mend existing injuries - respawning while wounded takes considerably longer, too, so it's best to play it safe when you're injured!
On the contrary, being splatted is not the same as being killed; in fact, getting splatted in tight situations can provide something of an opportunity for escape - especially if the threat believes you're already taken care of. In some ways, it's a bit like playing dead!
Inkling and Octoling death, however, can be caused by a great many forces. Only ink is capable of splatting them - any other attacks, if inflicted with due force, can fatally wound and kill. That said, there are varieties of ink capable of inflicting actual harm. Ink such a this was used during the Great Turf War between Octolings and Inklings, and while it doesn't splat enemies, it's more than capable of wounding. At its weakest, the presence of potent ink is enough to slow an Inkling or an Octoling down, should they find themselves stuck.
Direct hits from potent ink, if forceful enough, are capable of breaking the skin and inflicting very real damage. If the enemy ink is not cleaned out, the severity of the wound will only worsen in time. Ordinary ink as well as water are capable of cleansing a wound, and while binding an injury without removing the potent ink will stop external bleeding, it's important to cleanse the injury as quickly as possible.
