At Iggy's response, his smile waned slightly, a look of dubiety impeding upon his features. He pursed his lips, looking off to the side. "I mean... sure. Whatever you say, pal." There was no way he was gonna buy that. Cas knew his type, after all - he'd seen those teammates of his, up close and personal, and they certainly weren't anything like him.
Thank goodness for that. He was way cooler, for one thing.
The bus stop was within view now, but it was deserted. Not many people took the bus this late, anyway. A skip in his step, he picked up the pace, teeming with enthusiasm. "It's just a few minutes from here. No biggie." His smile returned and he glanced back at Iggy. "Why? You nervous or something?"

It wasn't hard to pick up on Casper's skepticism. Rather than give in to the twinging of his patience and argue his point, Iggy drew a long breath in through his nostrils and let the comment pass. He was far from eager to reach their destination and even less eager to stay, but then, he didn't exactly have much of a choice in the matter. When Casper hastened his steps, he gave his head a light shake but said nothing of it.
"No." His voice was incredulous to the point of amusement. "I told my mom I'd be back soon," Iggy clarified, "I couldn't care less about where it is. I'm not nervous." Then, with some thought, he frowned, studying Casper with a sidelong stare. "I take it you only have your agenda to worry about."

Unbothered by Iggy's consistent unenthusiasm, he looked eagerly on, awaiting his companion's response; when it came, he was granted a rush of amusement and his grin broadened. "Your mom?" Cas retorted in disbelief. "You always do what your parents say?" He waved his hand and faced forward again, laughing. "It's not even dark out yet! Don't tell me you're worried you're gonna miss your bed time." In spite of the teasing nature of his words, his tone was playful.
At first, he didn't seem to have any intentions of responding to Iggy's comment - that is, until a look of delayed realization passed over his features and he added, rubbing his neck with a smile, "Oh, yeah. My parents don't care too much what I do. They're pretty chill."

The inkling furrowed his brow at Casper's tone. "Who else?" Iggy retorted, catching his skeptical glance. He pressed his lips into a thin line at the other boy's next remark, but seemed otherwise uncaring of his teasing. Rolling his eyes, he looked away, silently surveying the empty bus stop as they approached. A quiet modicum of thought escaped him. "Five o'clock sharp," came his absent words, "or I'm grounded from video games."
Casper's response willed a faint smirk to his lips. A pointed glance was cast his way, and in a knowing voice, he observed, "That explains a lot." He allowed his eyes to wander to the vacant bench and lone street lamp indicating the bus stop's location. "You don't always spend your nights riding buses to remote places, do you?"

His smile waned suddenly at the sound of Iggy's reply. Then, visibly disbelieving, he turned and stared at the inkling, his lips parted and eyes wide. "Wait, you play video games? You?" It wasn't long before his grin returned, some kind of excitement lighting up his face. "No way, dude! You didn't strike me as the type! We gotta hang out sometime and play together -- uh, depending on what kinda games you're into." There was a playful note in his voice. "I'll pretty much play anything, anyway. I'm not picky."
Having arrived at the bus stop, he stepped under the overhanging roof and swung his backpack off his shoulder, setting it on the ground beside the bench there. Then, crossing his arms, he took a seat and leaned back, making himself comfortable. "Nah, though - not always." He waved his hand. "It's just something to do. 'Remote' places aren't where all the fun's at, so..." Trailing off, he allowed a moment of silence before glancing back up at Iggy, that same smirk upon his face again. "Bet you're not really cut out for that kinda stuff, though."

He took no notice of Casper's change in expression, eyes set directly ahead without a trace of interest. It wasn't until his companion spoke, a note of shock in his voice, that Iggy hesitated and glanced back at him. Incredulity touched at his face, but it was quickly followed by a skeptical smile "That was a joke," he clarified, adding nothing else as Casper continued to enthuse. The amusement in his eyes faded somewhat with a surprised blink at the blue inkling's next suggestion, but he said nothing of it.
Eyes narrowing with a defensive smirk at the other boy's teasing, he countered, "What do you think I play? Dress up?" Allowing the topic to pass as Casper settled into the bench, Iggy crossed his arms and waited by the lamp post, staring quietly down the street.
"I couldn't tell you," he said, "I don't know what 'kinda stuff' you're referring to." Returning Casper's smug gaze with an elevation of his brow, Iggy observed as an afterthought, "You don't have much faith in me."

Some delayed realization took hold of him at Iggy's clarification, but beyond a quick look of surprise and an absent 'oh', he didn't bother to linger. His smirk broadened to a grin when his companion continued. "I dunno... I wouldn't put it past you to play dress up games. You do seem pretty secretive," he replied, looking thoroughly pleased with himself. Luckily, Cas didn't seem to notice the inkling's silence at his mention of playing video games together; he hadn't been expecting a particularly enthusiast response, as it were, or even any response at all.
Retrieving his phone from his pocket, he checked the time, unaware of the glance being cast his way. The bus would be here soon, if it was on time. Cas tried to stifle the slight nervousness he felt at the thought of actually trying to prove his skill to Iggy, but the yellow inkling spoke before he had much of a chance to think about it. He looked briefly up from his phone, then laughed to himself, shaking his head. "Nah, dude. You just don't see a lot of people like you around the places I like to hang out. It's like... y'know, clubs and stuff - or parties or whatever. I just can't really see you enjoying yourself at places like that. Nothin' personal."

Casper's teasing earned a light scoff from the boy, but any traces of genuine offense were absent from his expression. Resting his shoulder against the lamp post, he lifted his eyes to watch a cluster of insects fluttering beneath its fluorescent bulb. "You're more perceptive than I thought" was his sarcastic reply, spoken without a glance Casper's way.
He knit his brow at the inkling's next words, torn between confusion and indignation for a moment. "People like me?" Iggy drew his gaze back to Casper, squinting. "What's that supposed to mean?" Only after some pause did he frown, looking away for a moment, and begrudgingly agree, "I don't get the appeal - you're right." He shifted against the lamp post, fixing his eyes on Casper once more. "You can find crowds and noise at the mall during rush hour; that doesn't make it enjoyable."

Directing a pointed look in Iggy's direction, Casper waited for him to finish, one eyebrow arched expectantly. It wasn't until the inkling admitted to finding crowds and the like unappealing that his expression lost its seriousness in favor of some visible amusement. "Yeah, okay," he replied with a grin and shake of his head. "I'm not even gonna bother trying to educate you on that one. Just don't knock it 'til you try it. Who knows - you might actually enjoy yourself." Tucking his phone into his pocket, he straightened his posture and looked down the road. It was empty, set aside the occasionally passing car.
For a moment, he was silent. Then, looking as though he'd been struck with a realization of some kind, Casper looked at Iggy and started abruptly, "Hey, so -- what's your name, by the way? I've seen you around a lot, but I don't think I ever caught it." A sheepish smile tugged at his lips, some brief uncertainty passing over his face, and he added, "I mean, unless you told me and I already forgot it or something."

Pulling the corner of his mouth to the side, he sent a doubtful look Casper's way at the sound of the blue inkling's suggestion. "I'm not optimistic," he admitted, adding as an afterthought, "but there's a first time for everything, I guess." Not that he had any plans of actually putting himself through such a thing. When Casper looked away, he followed suit, surveying the empty city with a lightly furrowed brow. There was a comfortable chill in the air now, whisked throughout the plaza by a lazy breeze.
Casper's voice caused him to blink, expression one of momentary surprise. Well, that was an embarrassing thing to forget to mention.
Tightening the arms closed around his front, he glanced back at his companion. "It's Iggy," he said, continuing with a knowing smirk, "Your name wasn't very hard to memorize - I'm at an unfair advantage."

A look of recollection shown upon his face at the sound of Iggy's response, and for a moment, he cursed himself for having forgotten the inkling's name - he knew he'd heard it somewhere before. Surely it must have been mentioned it in one of the classes they'd had together, not to mention the fact that he was so well known in the Turf War scene. "Cool, thanks! I won't forget it this time," Casper replied, sounding as sure of himself as he felt. The certainty faded from his expression, though, when Iggy continued.
Blinking, Cas gave him a perplexed look. "Wait, what? Really?" He didn't have time to conceal the surprised tone in his voice, but caught himself a second later and clarified, "Oh, right - because I'm such a big deal and all that. Duh."

Iggy certainly hadn't expected for him to recall his name - after all, not everyone was as boisterous during school hours as Casper. The look of recognition that passed over the blue inkling's face next willed an amused smile to his lips. "We've never formally met," he pointed out, "I couldn't blame you for forgetting in the first place." Iggy hadn't considered the implications of his playful remark before his companion's expression took a shocked turn.
Blinking, he hesitated, taking a moment to realize what Casper meant. His lips parted, brow furrowing somewhat as he considered the boy's unexpected conclusion. "... Well," Iggy began, torn between amusement and skepticism, "I mean... obviously." Fighting a smile, he cleared his throat and looked back down the street. Only after some thought did he glance back at Casper, tapping his index finger absently against forearm.
"You know," he said, "you don't have to go out in the middle of the night for tryouts." There was a teasing air to his voice. "You don't exactly have much competition."

A surprised smile tugged at his lips at Iggy's response. The change in his behavior from before, while not entirely obvious, was at least noticeable, and Casper found he much rather preferred him like this. Maybe he wasn't as big of a stick in the mud as Cas had thought - even if he'd been the one to provoke Iggy in the first place. It was an odd feeling, just talking in the way that they were. Perhaps it shouldn't have felt as strange as it did, but it was a welcome change from what he was used to.
He hesitated when Iggy continued. Blinking, the amusement upon his face faded somewhat, replaced by a look of momentary recollection. Smile waning slightly, he replied a bit absently, "Oh, uh -- right." It hadn't taken very long at all for his confidence to start slipping again, though this time it seemed more the result of his own self doubt than anything Iggy had said or done. The very idea of tryouts was enough to make his stomach turn now, even when he'd been so persistent merely minutes before. Cursing himself for his uncertainty, he wrung his hands together.
"About that," Casper's voice was hesitant. "I mean, I'm still totally down for tryouts, but..." He drew a clipped breath, keeping his eyes down. "I know what I said about being super skilled and stuff, but you -- I mean, you already know I'm, uh..." His smile returned, but this time it held a nervous air; he laughed under his breath. "Not... 'your type'. Unless you totally forgot that match we played together and I don't know it." The amusement upon his features was strained. "Your teammates might've been assholes, but at least they could... y'know," he gestured loosely with his hand before dropping it to his side again, looking visibly frustrated now. "Even if you don't remember, you said you already knew my name, so you probably know enough to put things together."
Steeling himself, he returned his attention to Iggy and continued, this time much less hesitantly and more persistently, "But -- what I wanna say is -- I'm not exactly the best now, but I can get better! I mean, you're like, crazy good at turf war, so you could teach me, right?" Casper certainly hadn't wanted to resort to begging, but that certainly seemed like what had happened - no matter how he regretted every word to leave his mouth, though, he couldn't seem to stop himself.

When Casper spoke, his voice seemed to have waned in its confidence. Iggy's eyes wandered to the other boy's hands, and with a frown, he watched as they were wrung absently together. Wondering what had caused his shift in behavior, the Inkling said nothing, allowing his gaze to return to Casper's face in patient expectation. As his companion began to elaborate, permitting an uncertain laugh, his expression remained still in its seeming indifference.
Casper's frustration was palpable, and as it grew, his brow furrowed. Making no effort to interrupt, Iggy waited, shocked by the other boy's blatant unease. It was strange, how quickly he lost confidence and then built it back up again in a matter of seconds, all of his own accord. Modesty wasn't exactly an abundant trait among Inklings - at least, it certainly seemed that way. Still, as Casper continued to speak, it became plainly clear that he was far from confident in his abilities.
When the blue Inkling finished, now staring expectantly his way, he narrowed his eyes, silent for a moment. "You don't have to be 'the best,'" he informed Casper, knitting his brow. "I'm not the best either." Recalling his companion's previous statement, he ducked his head a bit, looking away. "And if my old team was my 'type', I wouldn't be talking to you now." A bitter tone had entered his voice, but it was gone when he spoke next, looking back at Casper.
"Inexperience isn't a problem," Iggy said. "If you're willing to learn, I'm willing to teach you what I know." A faint smile tugged at his lips, and with a skeptical elevation of his brow, he pointed out, "Besides, I'm not holding tryouts just so I can find the most talented applicants. If I don't get a basic idea of your experience level, I won't know where improvement is needed."

[nospaces] | live a life you will remember [break] these are the nights that never die when you get older, your wild heart will live for younger days. |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] The brief silence which followed his words felt like an eternity. As quickly as his anxiety had built up, however, it was dismantled, little more than a reassuring response on Iggy's part all that it took to put his apprehension at ease. At first, though, Casper could manage nothing other than blatant shock, and it shown plainly upon his face. Baffled, he stared at the yellow Inkling as he continued, every word to leave his lips furthering Casper's disbelief. Here he'd been expecting to be mocked, or laughed at, or at the very least shot down, but Iggy had met him with nothing but genuine understanding. He could scarcely believe he was even talking to the same person as before. [break][break] A rapidly manifesting skepticism refused to allow him the luxury of relief. Rather than immediately accept his companion's reassurance, he felt the oddest impulse to fight against it. He'd never heard anyone say anything like that before - of all of the teams he'd tried to join, they'd never spared him a single 'inexperience isn't the problem' or 'you don't have to be the best' before they discarded him. Why would someone of Iggy's skill level be willing to accept amateurs into his team? Surely the gracious thing to do would have been to just accept what was being offered to him - namely, a chance to finally prove himself, to learn, to finally be believed in - but he couldn't accept it. [break][break] Feeling inexplicably defensive, he interjected the precise second after Iggy had finished speaking, his features twisted with something like frustrated incredulity, "You're not 'the best', but at least you actually know what you're doing -- you can't accept just anyone into your team. Don't you even care about winning?" Catching himself a moment later, he paused, then huffed and turned his gaze elsewhere. "I mean, no offense or anything, but that sounds backwards as hell. Not that I'm not... grateful or whatever. I just don't think you know what you're doing." Without turning his head, he looked at Iggy and squinted, a suspicious way about him. "You're not a masochist, are you?" [break][break] OOC COMMENTS: yes, cas. just argue with the person offering your tactless ass a position on his team. Just do it.
