He was painfully aware of Casper's intentions. Scrutinizing the inkling's face with a testy glare, his pupils sharpened to critical slits, dislike brimming plainly in his expression. Whatever intentions he had to manage even a shred of kindness were dangling by a thread, and each word the other boy spoke served only to wear away at its fibers. No - he didn't care what Casper thought; he'd allow the little neophyte the satisfaction of believing he and his ex-teammates were no different.
... Even if he was wrong. Eyes narrowing further, he ground his teeth silently together. "Can you?" Iggy countered, lip curling slightly. Feeling his blood begin to burn, he drew a breath far deeper than the first, exhaling with a slight part of his lips. Unwilling to allow Casper the satisfaction of witnessing his undoing, he turned in a slow, deliberate movement away from the boy. His index finger tapped lightly, if somewhat stiffly, at his jaw. "What a specific set of directions." His voice was bitter. "Do you plan on leading the way, or are you entertained enough wasting my time?"

It was only at the sound of the other boy's steely response that Cas hesitated in his charade. The guise of nonchalance he'd constructed waned suddenly and, feeling vaguely uncertain, he blinked, casting a reluctant glance in Iggy's direction to find that he'd turned away, his posture as tense as his expression. Casper's uncertainty bloomed at the sight. So... maybe that comment had been a bit over the line, but it wasn't entirely his fault. After all, what other choice did he have? Begging hadn't worked in his favor, so naturally manipulation would have to do. Too bad it wasn't going nearly as well as he'd planned.
At least, that's what he thought - until Iggy spoke, the words as unquestionably harsh as they were a ray of hope. His hesitation dispersed in seconds and, too startled that the other boy was even considering his suggestion to care that he was on the verge of some kind of meltdown, he blurted in disbelief, "Wait, so -- so you'll go?" His bewilderment quickly gave way to excitement and he stepped around Iggy so as to face him, the beginnings of a dazed grin parting his lips. His face lit up with the gesture. "You're gonna give me a chance?"

Whether or not he'd anticipated that Casper would begin to doubt himself, Iggy deigned to ignore whatever change in expression his response might have caused. It was all the better that he would continue in his entitled tirade; any excuse to crush the inkling's dreams underfoot was all the gratification he needed. As if he could tolerate Casper's insolence long enough to share an alliance. Pulling the corner of his mouth quietly to one side, Iggy leered across the plaza, too insulted to consider letting the bait lie.
At worst, going along with Casper's irritating plan ensured him sinfully fulfilling amounts of revenge - and, at best, a new teammate; he hoped it wouldn't come to the latter.
The sound of Casper's stunned reply reached him seconds later. Eyes closing for a moment, Iggy sighed heavily and heard the inkling step around to his front. When he opened his eyes, Casper's face beamed up at him, and a twinge of annoyance willed them to narrow. "You've seen enough to know 'my type', remember?" There was a pointed edge to his voice. "If you're any good, you'll fit that description and have no reason to worry."
A smile teetering on a grimace tugged at his lips. "Since you're so confident, I see no reason to not give you a chance."

Annoyance rolled off of Iggy in waves. Caught up in some bubbling excitement though he was, Casper wasn't entirely unaware of this - the other inkling's irritation was palpable in the air, and it made him hesitate. Given the nature in which Iggy spoke, Cas found himself almost unnerved. The words fell painfully short of amiable, and though he surely should have expected the boy's displeasure, what with how he'd just been blatantly manipulated, Casper couldn't help but feel disappointed. This wasn't quite how he pictured things working out - not at all.
Easing up on the enthusiasm as much as he was capable, Cas leaned back, feeling more threatened by Iggy's halfhearted smile than anything else. He frowned a bit, lips pressing to a thin line, and glanced off to the side, lifting one hand to rub the back of his neck. The crowd in the plaza was rapidly thinning. "I mean... yeah, but I'm not, like..." Cas dropped his hand and gestured loosely with it while he tried to find the words he was looking for. "That good. Those guys were probably on steroids or something." Exhaling, he rocked back on his heels and then refocused his attention upon Iggy's face, managing a playful smile. "But I'm also not a complete asshole, so... there's that."

He was too occupied with his own irritation to pay any mind to Casper's apparent shift in behavior. Hopeful that his words would plainly convey his point, Iggy awaited a response in stony silence, eyes narrowed to accusatory slits. He had a lot of nerve, twisting things like that - to think he'd been friendly to the one manipulating him now.
When Casper's response came, it lacked its previous confidence. Iggy studied the other boy's face with a discerning frown. "You must think I'm desperate," he muttered, neglecting to mention that he was, in fact, desperate. Hesitating for a moment, he averted his eyes and stifled a sigh. "I wasn't planning on giving you a personality test, but I'd rather you were terrible; at least that can be fixed." The inkling returned his gaze to Casper's face, lip curling slightly. "You can't train someone to be nice." Tilting his head, he suggested, voice cold, "I'd work on not being a "complete asshole" if I were you."

If his guilt was a flame, every word out of Iggy's mouth was fire retardant. It didn't take long for his remorse to die out almost entirely, but Cas held on to it as much as he was able, if only for the sake of salvaging his chances at becoming part of this new team (even if over half of its members didn't exist yet). His smile didn't last long.
Feeling defensive, Casper retorted, trying to keep the annoyance from his voice, "I didn't say I was terrible." He fought the urge to scoff, forcibly smothering the anger stirring in his chest. "And I'm less of an asshole than your old... friends, so count yourself lucky, alright?" Crossing his arms again, he frowned back at Iggy. Then, after drawing a deep breath, he continued, "It's just a bus ride away, if you're coming." His gaze lingered upon the other inkling's face a moment longer, as if thoughtful, and a smirk tugged at his lips. "Not totally sure you're the best guy to be hanging around if I wanna become less of an asshole, though."

"You didn't have to," Iggy replied, unimpressed. Rather than elaborate, he crossed his arms and cast his attention languidly elsewhere, as if he couldn't be bothered to entertain Casper's defense any longer. His features faltered in their passiveness only at the mention of his ex-teammates, a hint of disgust poisoning his expression. 'Friends'... He was using that term awfully liberally, wasn't he?
Biting his tongue, Iggy resisted the urge to correct him and shifted his eyes glumly back to Casper's face. Remaining silent for a long moment, he raked his gaze across the other inkling's features before proposing, brow elevating as if in boredom, "Then don't bother trying out." The beginnings of a condescending smirk pulled at his lips. "I'm not forcing you to stay, am I?" Expression shedding its (slight) amusement, Iggy resumed his previous stoicism and leaned forward. "I'm ready when you are."

So his efforts at making light of things hadn't helped - no surprise there. Equally unsurprising was the fact that Iggy's response managed to do away with his amusement within seconds. Casper's smile waned to a grimace at the sight of the other boy's smirk, expression suddenly dry, and he rolled his eyes. "Kill it with the sass, pal," Cas said, looking incredibly unamused. "You're really just proving my point here; and I don't see you denying it, either." He allowed his attention to rest upon the taller boy's face a moment longer, as if to assert control, and then started past him, visibly unenthusiastic. "And no, you're not forcing me to stay." There was a pointed, almost pained, tone in his voice.
Fate was cruel.

He wasn't entirely sure how he expected Casper to receive his many pokes and prods - not that Iggy didn't feel he was deserving of every last one. Still, the lack of so much as a trace of offense left him mildly surprised, and a skeptical frown was all he managed at the other inkling's bored response. So now Casper was the one being inconvenienced, was he?
Despite himself, a spark of defensiveness flared up within him at his companion's parting words. Iggy's lips parted, expression of intent plain, before they slowly and reluctantly closed. Beginning to feel embarrassed, of all things, he followed the other boy with a begrudging leer as he passed by. He hunched his shoulders and began to trail slowly after him, muttering a bitter "At least one of us wants to be here."

When little response was given on Iggy's part other than an annoyed glare and an unhappy remark, Cas felt strangely gratified. That had shut him up pretty quickly, hadn't it? Folding the paper in his hand and tucking it into his coat pocket, he fought a smirk. He hadn't stopped to think about why he wasn't more upset by the fact that Iggy was unhappy with him. He needed this to work out, after all; he wasn't sure how many other opportunities he'd get. All the same, Cas wasn't sure how willing he was to completely swallow his pride for the sake of earning a position on the team - especially when he was dealing with someone who was as big of an asshole as Iggy.
... And it couldn't hurt to tease him a bit more.
Trying (and failing) to conceal the smug smile tugging at his lips, he continued towards the bus station, taking little notice of the fact that the sun had nearly set and the crowd in the plaza had almost completely dispersed. "I'm not forcing you to stay," Cas replied without turning around, tucking both hands into his pockets. There was an air of amusement in his voice. "Remember?"

Trying not to focus too much on what self-satisfied thoughts his companion must have been thinking, Iggy studied the back of his head with a resolute grimace. So much for being 'in control' of the situation. Electing to ignore his unfavorable circumstances for the time being, he shook his head, muttering something incomprehensible under his breath, and pulled a phone from his pocket. His eyes remained fixed on the device's screen as they walked, lips pressed into a thin line. When Casper spoke, he blinked, appearing momentarily taken aback. His eyes promptly narrowed, flicking up from the screen to leer the inkling's way,
A quiet scoff escaped him. Lowering his gaze to the phone's screen once more, Iggy replied, voice low, "I didn't go through all the trouble of gathering applicants for nothing." His thumb tapped absently at the device, brow furrowing. "Unlike you, I have some amount of commitment invested in all of this."

Of course he'd been expecting a snarky response from Iggy, but when it came, Cas found himself momentarily surprised. The complacent look drained from his face, leaving in its wake a rather blank expression. He hesitated, footsteps slowing until they stopped entirely, and then turned his face to give his companion a somewhat incredulous glance.
"Dude, who said anything about me not being invested?" he asked, looking as bewildered as he did amused, though the latter emotion took a moment or two to develop again. "I wouldn't be dragging you to tryouts with me if I didn't care about joining your team. You're the one trying to get out of it, unless I totally missed something."

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 'investment' usually entail some amount of patience?" he countered, lifting his eyes from the phone to raise an eyebrow at Casper. "I figured tryouts were a given. I never said you didn't make the cut," Iggy went on, adding with a pointed look, "Rushing into things without any prior planning - at night, in some unsolicited place - isn't exactly the best way to measure of your ability." His eyes grazed the other boy's face a moment longer, unflinching in their stoicism, before lowering once more. "But whatever. It's your score."

As usual, Casper wasn't too happy with his companion's response. Regardless, he refused to let it get to him. It wasn't his fault he was such a stick in the mud - some people were just born that way. Smile broadening, he waved a hand dismissively, "Nah, dude - if all you do is wait around for good stuff to come your way, you're gonna miss it! First come, first serve, right? 'Sides, I'm not really good at that whole... 'patience' thing." His voice trailed off a bit with the statement before he perked up again and continued, "But there's nothing wrong with being a go-getter!" Satisfied with his response, he proceeded forward, adjusting his backpack straps. "And you didn't really have to say it, by the way. Unless you always have that... i'm-not-interested look on your face."

Casper's reply was met with a look of skepticism. Parting his lips as if to speak, Iggy hesitated, seeming to think better of commenting before closing them again. Arguing with him over every last detail wasn't going to make the night end any quicker - even if the notion that Casper lacked the incentive to wait was exceedingly concerning. He wasn't sure what he'd expected.
"... Of course not," Iggy agreed after some pause, magenta eyes trained absently on the pavement passing underfoot. Attempting to keep the exasperation from his voice, he glanced back at Casper and informed him, forcing his patience, "If I wasn't going to follow through with tryouts, I would've told you so upfront - since waiting obviously isn't an option."
Scanning the towering buildings flanking the clearing, the inkling quietly observed the billboards and flashing lights, noting how the glass doors of many stores now read "Closed." He lengthened his strides and fell into step beside Casper, albeit in a manner mindful of his distance. "How far is the bus going to take us?" He stared expectantly sideways at the other boy.
