[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Rage flooded his body, a hot tide coursing through his veins, and in its midst, he could focus on nothing but the burning need he felt to end the Inkling's life. The sight of Khyran's face alone urged the feeling to flare until he was sure it would consume him entirely. Having long since dismissed Mar as being an actual threat, he ceased to so much as spare a glance in her direction as he passed.
He didn't realize his mistake until she'd taken swift hold of his wrist, but within an instant, the world was spinning too fast for him to be able to do much of anything to remedy it. As quickly as she'd thrown him over her shoulder, his back hit the ground and the breath left his lungs in a rush. His head was reeling. It was enough, at least, to temporarily daze him, and within seconds his anger faded significantly, disorientation taking its place.
Coughing, he grimaced and swore harshly on an outtake of breath, struggling to collect himself enough to at least see straight. When finally Crow did manage to open his eyes, he squinted, brow furrowing, and lifted his gaze - upon seeing Mar standing over him, the discontent drained from his face, this time replaced by a look of blatant shock. For once, he was as speechless as Khyran at the sight of her, as if he couldn't believe what had just happened. His lips parted in disbelief, and for what felt like an eternity, he merely stared at her, a part of him feeling precisely as stupid as he looked. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fly away, far away, I know why the caged bird sings [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]These adrenaline-filled moments never came often for Mar; well, perhaps they did. Just not in a way that would cause her to have taken such drastic physical action. Because of this, Mar was in just as much shock as Khyran and Crow at this point, having to take a few moments of staring straight back at him for her mind to catch up with her body.
Her frame trembled with the excitement of the situation. Mar hadn't gotten into any type of physical combat in what felt like ages, and it felt so strange to pick it back up again so suddenly; and yet it was as natural as riding a bike.
If Crow had been someone who had just been misbehaving, Mar would have presented slight concern for him, even going as far as to help him back up with an apology. But Crow had shown her that he had been enough of a threat to the safety of others that she knew she just couldn't do that.
She also knew he could fight back at any moment now, and she absolutely did not want that. Mar was going to use this window of opportunity to lay this to rest.
Attempting to keep an air of dominance about her, Mar loomed over Crow with a scowl.
"That's... That's a warning. I-I'm going to make sure this Inkling leaves the valley safely." Mar scolded him. Her tone was stern, but there had been slightly more venom to it than previously. "I'm telling you one more time, to leave him alone." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]For several moments, Crow was too shocked by the sudden turn of events to even bother with regret. The girl staring him down now barely even seemed to resemble the person she'd been just a few seconds ago, her features steely and voice domineering. It was... odd, to say the very least.
He couldn't quite wrap his head around what had caused such a sudden shift in her disposition. Certainly he knew she wanted to protect the Inkling, but that she was so determined she'd even risk her own life to do it? He'd thought she was bluffing, but now, judging by the look in her eyes, it had become incredibly clear just how serious she truly was. Whoever she was, she wasn't just an ordinary civilian - no one who fought the way she did could have been anything but a soldier.
Whatever disregard Crow had held for her was entirely gone now. Fighting back was still an option, but it would have been idiotic at best. She clearly had the upper hand, thanks to his foolish inattention towards her - and, frankly, he wasn't sure how much more he wanted to test her patience. In the midst of his indecision, though, he couldn't help but feel curious about her. What was a soldier doing defending an Inkling? And a trespasser, no less.
Now that his shock had, for the most part, subsided, he regarded her in a manner verging on cautious. Regardless of how much he wanted to kill the Inkling - and it pained a part of him that Khy had been there to witness it all - he doubted it was worth going up against her. So, rather than attempting to defy her, he narrowed his eyes and stared back up at the Octoling reproachfully, as if searching for something within her gaze that would explain her behavior.
Without revealing a change in expression, he finally spoke after a prolonged silence, his voice now surprisingly hesitant and low, if not housing a vaguely sarcastic air, "... Gladly." | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] Khyran was still staring at the two of them, standing there looking like his brain had just leaked out of his ears. It was only when Mar started to speak that he snapped back to reality, his dull silver eyes squinting at Mar. Then, they quickly shifted to Crow. What he said, what he did... could he even do anything? Was this boy outmatched? [break][break] He knew Crow wasn't all bark and no bite. The kid had moved with purpose- he knew what he was doing. That could only mean that this wasn't a fluke, and Mar was- truly- more than Crow could take. It seemed the octoling finally realized this, as he rose from the ground and conceded defeat. [break][break] Khyran was surprised. He wasn't sure Crow's pride could take the admission. But he did, and Khyran felt tension ease in the wake of his decision. [break][break] He looked back at Mar. She was really putting everything on the line for him. He felt an ache in his heart for her, and he didn't know what to do. Should he say he could make it back on his own? Was it safe to? Could he ... pick up his box? Would doing such a thing incite Crow's wrath again? [break][break] For some reason... Khyran doubted it. [break][break] He took a step forward and stooped to the ground where his box lay crushed among shards of glass and splintered wood. He swept them aside with his good hand and plucked the photograph up. The scattered letters. The cassette tape. The candy. They were alreday specked and stained with his blood. But at least he had them- for however legible they might be. His hand burned now, and he felt an ache in his entire body. His energy melted as the tension left, and he wondered how much strength he would even have to get back. [break][break] Without a word to Crow or Mar, he started to walk... but he did look over his shoulder, as if he expected Mar to follow. [break][break] He didn't want her to leave without expressing his thanks... [break][break] And asking a single, burning question.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fly away, far away, I know why the caged bird sings [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]That was that.
With one last huff, Mar averted her gaze from Crow, and stepped over him in order to retrieve the satchel she'd placed on the ground previously. The occasional wary glance made it over her shoulder, half-expecting Crow to stand up and fight back. But alas, it seemed this wasn't the case... for now.
Her attention was diverted to Khyran, now. Mar could feel the adrenaline begin to melt away already as her heartbeat quieted down in her head. Shyness and doubt were creeping their way back into her mind. Was this the right thing to do after all? Was Khyran a threat all along?
Well, even if he was, he seemed in no condition to fight, she figured.
Mar glanced at the shattered remains of his box. Where was he going with that, even? Was it a gift for a friend? A sweet gesture, but to deliver them alone and unarmed seemed so foolish. She couldn't just let him go and risk being jumped again...
Adjusting the strap to her satchel over her shoulder, Mar made up her mind then and there; her trip home would have to wait.
She trailed after him lightly, almost timidly. "Um... Sir?" her voice was quiet, very much unlike the bite it had carried previously. "Are you okay...?" | commentary |
