[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]If the Inkling had not been broken before, he was now.
Satisfied by the feel of the box giving out from beneath his foot, he waited to relieve pressure until he was certain he'd thoroughly destroyed the majority of its contents, whatever they might have been. While a part of him had felt curious to begin with, the feeling didn't last when faced with his hatred, snuffed out as quickly as it had manifested. He could feel more than the box breaking under the force, however, and soon blood joined the broken up glass and wood upon and around Khyran's hand.
A breath he couldn't find the will to turn into laughter slipped from his lungs, and he stepped off of the Inkling's hand, silent for a moment. Then, slowly, his attention fell upon the other's face, and when he glimpsed nothing there but hollow resignation, he frowned, observing him for a moment more through narrowed, passive eyes.
"We're done here."
With the same foot he destroyed Khy's gift with, he pressed suddenly against his throat, putting forth enough force to suffocate him without fully crushing his esophagus. Crow's expression held a look of mild calculation, but apart from that, it was empty. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fly away, far away, I know why the caged bird sings [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Ever since acquiring infiltration duty, those moments where Mar had to return to the valley felt surreal. It was easy to forget how dissimilar Inkopolis was from Octo Valley, and how much better the Inklings seemed to have it. Even still, it felt nice to be back 'home', as it were.
Though it would be nicer if work was not always attached to it.
Mar only had one reason to be wandering this part of town so late at night. Her superiors preferred to receive her research in private, and in person. She could certainly understand the reasons for this, but she had to admit, the entire process was all so tedious; conveying her findings out loud, receiving quiet nods and dismissive comments, and then having to make the whole journey back on foot. All the while, worrying about if she'd done a good job or not. In honesty, the best part about it was being free for another month. With the satchel that carried her belongings slung over her shoulder, the dark-tentacled Octoling eagerly made her way back to the city through the path she had first come.
It seemed, however, her trip would be delayed. For straight in her line of sight, there was a commotion that had not been there when she first arrived.
Upon closer inspection, it definitely looked like a fight of some kind; a very one-sided fight. Or perhaps she'd been witnessing the tail-end of it? Mar knew this to be a peaceful area, and this sort of encounter was not normal in the least.
A quiet sigh of conflict tumbled from her lips; she did not want to get involved in such violence. However, she knew she would be unable to ignore it without suffering stabbing guilt later on. Maybe she could stand in the shadows until the winner walked away. Then she could help whoever was left...
Mar walked just a little closer, getting a look at the Octoling roughly her age, and the man on the ground. The man's state could have been a lot worse, she admitted. Seeing his species as well, she realized the real root of the problem; saving his life now could jeopardize her own military status unlike anything else.
And yet...
Morality came first. Before she knew it, Mar found herself approaching the scene at a speedwalk-pace, the strap of her satchel clutched tightly in her trembling hands. The sternest look she could muster was plastered onto her face as her gaze was immediately directed towards Crow.
"Excuse me...!" she spoke up, silently hoping that this would be enough to distract the Octoling.
"Could you maybe, um... not do that?" Mar felt the fear beginning to set in already, as she hurriedly sputtered out whichever words came to mind first. "I-I know it's none of my business, but... this doesn't seem... right...?" | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] The pressure on his throat came and he let it. The ridges of Crow's boot bore down on his windpipe, constricting it. He stopped breathing before that, though, and just held it. He could feel his head growing fuzzy, the lack of oxygen to his brain dulling the pain in his hand. [break][break] He thought he heard a voice, but maybe he was dreaming it. The mind did weird things when it was dying. [break][break] Then, he saw movement from the corner of his eye. Straining, he turned to look, squinting and struggling to hold on to the threads of consciousness he had left. He blinked at the blurs in vision. [break][break] A... girl? A bystander? In the haze of pain and confusion he hardly could tell anything more than that. Octoling, most likely. But young, and trying to help him. That was all he needed to know. [break][break] What if Crow tried to hurt her? No, he couldn't let him finish him off like this, only for him to let out his anger on someone else! Khy couldn't have that happen! [break][break] Both his hands raised to try and wrest Crow's boot off his neck. He tried to take in a breath, but couldn't. His damaged hand was heedless of the pain as his battered fingers tried to worm underneath the dirtied sole of Crow's shoe. Pathetic attempts, but he tried.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It would be over within a minute, and the Inkling seemed just as prepared to let himself be killed as Crow was prepared to kill him. After all, what was one more? Khyran wasn't the first person he'd killed, and he surely wouldn't be the last. Whenever he was met with even the slightest bit of uncertainty, he smothered it, swearing to himself it was nothing to be concerned with. No matter how he tried to fight it, though, the way Khy merely accepted his fate, let this happen to him... He wasn't like the others at all, and it made Crow want to end his life all that much more.
Perhaps that nagging emotion would die along with him.
The sound of an unfamiliar voice tore him from what felt like a daze, and suddenly he lifted his face, turning to look at the one who had spoken. Briefly the pressure he was applying to Khyran's throat let up, however slightly, and he blinked, looking precisely as surprised to see Mar as he felt. An Octoling girl who couldn't have been much younger than himself -- and she looked... less than pleased with what was taking place. In the midst of his shock, he felt the strangest urge to laugh, but it didn't reach the surface. What are the odds.
Arching an eyebrow, Crow looked her up and down, as if trying to determine whether or not she was being serious, but there didn't seem to be any trace of humor in her expression. That was disappointing, to say the least, but he didn't get a word out in reply before he felt a feeble grip upon his ankle. Abruptly returning his attention to the suddenly struggling Inkling at his feet, he couldn't manage nearly as much anger as he could surprise, and in its wake, confusion.
His brow furrowed, and some rapidly manifesting curiosity rose to the forefront of his attention. There seemed to be an inquiring look upon his face at the sight of Khy's resisting. Rather than questioning the Inkling out loud, though, he laughed a bit to himself, but it presented itself as more of a disbelieving exhalation than anything else. Then, finally, he replied to Mar without turning to look at her again, a faint amusement in his voice, "You're right - it's not your business." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fly away, far away, I know why the caged bird sings [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Mar tried desperately to conceal her panic. Upon seeing Khyran's attempts to remove that boot from his throat, she gave a very brief, warning glance to him. The last thing she wanted to do was make his situation worse, especially having no idea how far this Octoling would go.
Judging from his response, however, she could tell right away that this would be far more difficult than she anticipated; difficult, but not hopeless. Maybe, if she kept the situation calm, she could negotiate.
"N...no," she inhaled, attempting to keep a firm air. "But I am making it my business now!"
One thing she had been trying to control as of late is her assertiveness; or lack thereof. Her inability to take the reigns on a situation often led to her losing control right away, and ultimately falling into disaster. If she could show this guy she wasn't going to back down, everything would be fine. Right?
"I-I don't know what he did to wrong you, seeing as you're unharmed," She gestured a trembling hand towards Khyran. "But he-he has clearly had enough. Now please, l-lift your foot off of him, and let him go free. There won't have to be any trouble." | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break]The pressure lifted just long enough for him to draw in a strangled breath. He tried not to cough, to lose too much precious oxygen. He was scared now- scared for what would become of his would-be rescuer if she dared side with him in this conflict. It was no longer his own life on the line, or Lily's. Given this particular Octoling's lean towards brutalizing even an Inkling sympathizer... he knew this wasn't going to end well. [break][break] He didn't see the warning look Mar gave him. He floundered in a haze of pain and desperation. He would take whatever distraction he could salvage. When Mar began speaking, he gathered his strength and heaved with all his might. Crow's boot was freed from his throat. He rolled to the side in that instant, his reflexes only a result of boot camp long ago. By some stroke of luck, his prosthetic remained attached. [break][break] Coughing hoarsely and wheezing, he threatened to black out as oxygen surged to his head. Color returned to him, and still he coughed. Even in the midst of everything, he struggled to his hands and knees, then tried to rise to his feet. What should he do? Run? What if Crow tried to hurt Mar instead of him? Could he stop him if he tried? [break][break] He did the only thing he knew to do. [break][break] "Okay, kid... *wheeze*... you can screw with me. But... *wheeze*... I'm not going to let you screw with her. You have... *wheeze*... no idea what I'm really capable of doing to you... *wheeze*... if I wanted to..." [break][break] The answer was probably "nothing". But it was the best bluff he had. [break][break] His knees shook and knocked together. His hand dripped blood, his face was bruised, his chest heaved every breath. He didn't look like he could do much. Hell, he probably couldn't. But this wasn't about him anymore. Considering the circumstances, Mar could probably handle herself and it was his own ass that needed saving. But maybe he could bluff his way into appearing at least a little threatening. After all, if he could still fight, it would be two against one. If nothing else, he could be Mar's meatshield.

Post by Crow Osiris on Mar 2, 2016 6:02:23 GMT
[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Again his attention was distracted from Khyran by the girl's voice, and again he hesitated. Exasperation welled within him, and now some amount of annoyance shown upon his face. Crow's gaze shifted to focus upon her instead, and when he saw the way she was shaking, however faintly, when she gestured to the Inkling, he felt a twinge of confusion. Frowning, he stared at her for a moment, caught between bafflement and irritation.
It wasn't the time or place to argue with her, and he knew that. In spite of that, he couldn't seem to tear his gaze away. After a few moments of silence, he finally asked, the words clarifying and spoken with an air of disbelief, "You don't know... what he did wrong?" Again he had to fight the urge to laugh - instead, his lips merely tugged back to form a faint, incredulous smile. "Are you blind?"
Before he could continue, however, the grip upon his foot strengthened suddenly, forcing him backward. Startled, he barely managed to catch himself from falling and staggered back, cursing under his breath and turning his stare abruptly upon the Inkling. He exhaled harshly, fists clenching at his sides, and grit his teeth, his previous anger threatening to return. He'd half the mind to try and knock Khy off of his feet again, but a part of him couldn't help but wonder where he'd suddenly gotten his fighting spirit when he'd been so ready to embrace his own death merely seconds ago. The curiosity barely kept him at bay, but it was enough.
He stared at Khyran as he rose shakily to his feet, coughing in the way that only someone who had nearly been choked to death would. When finally the Inkling managed to speak, Crow felt little more than amazement. At the fact that he'd fought back, that he genuinely seemed worried for Mar, that he thought he stood a chance -- he could scarcely believe what he was hearing. Though several seconds passed before he could manage any kind of response at all, his features finally shifted, and this time, he couldn't stifle the grin tugging at his lips.
"You're full of surprises, aren't you?" he retorted, a smile in his voice. "You're twice the moron I thought you were. What would I gain from hurting her? It's not her I'm after. You're the one that needs to die -- isn't that what you want? Here I thought I was doing you a favor." His grin waned, the anger beginning to reveal itself upon his face. "Or would you rather I bring you to my superiors? I don't think they'd take kindly to an intruder - let alone someone who fought against and murdered our kind." A humorless, breathy laugh escaped him, but it fell quickly into silence. "...No. They wouldn't be so merciful."
A pause followed his words, and for a moment, he scrutinized Khy. "And you?" His eyes narrowed. "I'm not afraid of you -- but I welcome you to try." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fly away, far away, I know why the caged bird sings [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Mar hardly had a second to think of a proper retort before Khyran suddenly freed himself, causing a brief moment of excitement. It startled her, to say the least, but still she remained. She refused to leave until she was certain that this was resolved.
Bright green eyes darted back and forth between the two. Was that Inkling... defending her? That was his motive for that sudden burst of strength? Mar wasn't sure if she should have felt flattered or guilty, but quickly realized that there was no time to consider it. What she did know was that he was putting himself in harm's way, and that was the last thing she wanted right now.
"S-sir..." Mar began towards Khyran timidly, worried for his condition. This made her wonder if he would really do it; surely defending a complete stranger wasn't enough of a motive to attack someone else, especially after having supposedly done nothing but submit previously.
Crow's words, however, were enough for her to scrunch up her nose in... disgust. Not only was he using his authority as an excuse, but this boy's arrogance and prejudice was strangely beginning to annoy her; and she herself was hardly aware of it.
Mar was concerned purely for the safety of Khyran at this point. Without a hint of hesitance, she took a step in front of the Inkling, in a defensive stance.
"No," She started, her tone the firmest it's been thus far. "I'm... I am going to ask just one more time, you-you... bully!"
"Leave this Inkling alone, and there won't be any trouble!" | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] "I know exactly the sort of person you are." Khyran managed, his knees threatening to buckle, yet still he remained upright by some miracle of strength he didn't know he had. He stared at the Octoling boy with no hatred in his eyes, no malice. Only sadness, and something a little defensive. "This young woman... has the nerve to defend an Inkling. That makes her your enemy... doesn't it... you said so yourself, about Lily..." [break][break] His good hand lifted to wipe at the blood on his lips, shaking. He didn't want her to, but the girl was already moving to place herself between Crow and himself. No, he couldn't let her take a hit for him. He couldn't let this happen. He had to get a word out- to do *something!* She was going to get hurt, standing up to someone like Crow, calling him out on what he was doing! And for a stranger! Khy's pulse quickened as he watched her, wide-eyed. [break][break] "She's done nothing to you... she's one of your own. S-she's risking a lot by defending me right now... and I'm not going to let her suffer for it." He tried to stand a little straighter, to show force his knees to stop shaking and his spine to harden. "So let me propose a deal. I'll leave now and never come back. I won't tell anyone what happened here. So long as you don't harm this girl." A pause. "If you don't agree to these terms... if you lay one hand on her... you will regret it." [break][break] Big words from a such a weak man.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]He clenched his teeth, his eyes burning with vehemence, and fought the urge to scoff at the sound of Khyran's words. "No -- it doesn't make her my enemy, but it does make her a naive fool," he retorted hotly, but apart from that said nothing about his threats regarding Lily. Certainly he thought lowly of Inkling sympathizers, but they were still his kind, though he hated to admit it; there was nothing he could do to them, and perhaps a part of him didn't want to do anything to hurt them. It wasn't a crime, after all, to feel sorry for Inklings, he supposed.
It was just... supremely and infuriatingly idiotic.
As if having heard his thoughts, the Octoling in question stepped suddenly in front of Khy, her stance defensive and a determined expression upon her face. Incredulous, he merely stared at her for a few seconds, having successfully been put at a loss for words. Her words caught him all the more off guard. Skeptical, he knit his brow and regarded her with a more scrutinizing eye, his earlier annoyance increasing tenfold.
"... I'm sorry," he finally said, the words spoken in a slow and clarifying manner, his tone seeping with in-authenticity, "You're threatening me now? Is that -- that's what's happening?" Visibly unimpressed, he continued, a mocking way about him, "And what, exactly, are you going to do if I don't? Enlighten me."
When Khyran spoke again in her defense, Crow's eyes little more than narrowed, but they remained trained upon Mar's face in a manner almost expectant. He didn't seem to care to respond to the Inkling's threats. "I've been given no reason to," was all he said, his voice flat. "She's not of any concern to me." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fly away, far away, I know why the caged bird sings [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]No... No, that was absolutely the last thing she wanted. Even if this man was able to hold his own, Mar absolutely did not want to let her own deed go to waste. However, from the sound of his voice, she could definitely deduct that he was in no condition to be fighting a trained soldier. Unlike herself...
Mar was about to tell Khyran that she would be perfectly fine, and not to worry about protecting her; but Crow's words caused her brow to furrow.
Her face grew a slight magenta hue as she snapped her attention back to him. His statement stung a little; maybe it was due to the slight truths behind them. It did seem foolish to trust Inklings, especially considering the current situation between the two races. And even now; for all she knew Khyran could have had malicious intent all along.
And yet...
A lump was beginning to form in her throat, one that she was forced to swallow. Any previous fear had given way to irritation, and every sentence Crow spoke only added fuel to the fire.
"Inklings are not all horrible people. A-and if you're not willing to see that, then... y-you're the naive fool. Not me." Her voice, still with that semblance of gentleness, trembled slightly; though it wasn't from fear this time.
Mar's satchel slid from her shoulder as she placed it on the ground behind her, and not once did she take her eyes off of Crow. She assumed a straighter stance and took one step forward.
"It goes against everything I am... but if you refuse to let him go free... I am not afraid take you down!" She stated, moreso to herself than to him. She could use the reassurance at this point. | commentary |

[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] The tension was so thick he could nearly taste it. Khyran couldn't tell if he was making the situation worse or better for Mar. It was already painfully obvious to him that this kid had no capacity for empathy or remorse. And Mar was far too altruistic for her own good. He swallowed thickly, his single-eyed gaze swapping between the two. The sting of sweat got into his eye, but he couldn't even dare to blink. She called him a 'naive fool'. This was about to get ugly. [break][break] "...Okay, kid. You're outnumbered." Khyran said quietly. "I let you take me down because I have no quarrel with Octolings. I let you take me down because I fought for the Inklings in a baseless civil war that claimed innocent lives. I let you take me down because I don't have much to live for." A bony finger lifted languidly to point at Crow. "But I will have a quarrel with you if you hurt this girl. If we can come to terms of agreement... I'll turn around and leave right now. You'll never see me again. Nobody has to get hurt." [break][break] Nobody important, anyway. [break][break] "As for what I'm capable of doing. I think I have a good fifteen years on you. Ever been through boot camp, kiddo? I'm not going to just let you have at me next time, not when someone else is involved. It's a little different now. If I were you, I wouldn't take my chances."

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]While he'd no intentions of giving in, it seemed the same was unfortunately true of those opposing him - and one of them his own kind, no less. Had it not been for the fact that Mar was an Octoling, herself, he surely wouldn't have hesitated, but when she stepped forward and replied in a voice significantly more resolute and firm than it had been a moment ago, Crow couldn't help but feel a flicker of uncertainty, though he managed to mask it before it reached the surface.
It manifested in his chest alongside that same bafflement he'd felt when she first spoke up in the Inkling's defense. He couldn't imagine for the life of him why. Her words, in spite of his previous effort to appear composed, willed his previously dormant anger to flare, and this time, he didn't care to conceal the emotion. "I am not a fool for refusing to lie to myself, unlike you," he snapped, feeling his blood begin to boil. "I've seen what they're capable of -- what they've done -- and if you sincerely believe they wouldn't kill you without hesitation at the first given opportunity, then fine." His eyes narrowed to slits, contempt burning in their depths. "You'll learn - one way or another. It's only a matter of time."
When the Inkling spoke, his rage intensified at the mere sound of his voice. Throughout the whole of his warning, however, Crow said nothing, though is posture was lined with tension and had adopted a faint, infrequent tremble. His gaze locked upon Khy and, hands balling to fists at his sides, he grit his teeth and nearly snarled, "Get out of my way." Seething, he started past Mar with every intention of finishing what he'd started. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fly away, far away, I know why the caged bird sings [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Mar said nothing.
Why would she? It was clear to her now that his opinions would not be swayed. And 'you never give pearls to piranhas.' However wrong he was, however much his words irked her, she chose to remain silent on the matter. As long as he would give up trying to harm the Inkling...
...Which, unfortunately, he did not.
Mar listened to Khyran as he attempted to handle the situation as well. It seemed to her that he was perfectly capable of holding his own, but still there was a lack of certainty that she couldn't help but feel. If she could trust that Crow would quit then and there, then perhaps she herself would have relaxed and broken her glowering gaze towards the Octoling.
The very same gaze had trained itself on him as he began his walk.
No... She could not allow this to happen.
With perhaps the faintest hesitation, Mar stepped inches in front of Crow as he approached, reaching for and grabbing his right wrist. Then, within milliseconds, she'd spun back around in order to adequately flip Crow over her shoulder; a full-blown attempt to land him on the pavement below. | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"]
[break][break] Khyran didn't know what to expect. It seemed everything hung in this very moment. Time passed slower than it should have. He felt every heartbeat, saw how deep the hateful look in Crow's black eyes went, how Mar's stance shifted and prepared herself to strike... [break][break] He really was just going to get in the way. [break][break] He knew the moment Mar moved, her movements flowing and practiced. He wondered how many fights she'd been in. Her body was toned but not particularly musclar. Was she just streetwise, or was she trained? She snagged Crow's wrist before he even had a chance to get within an arm's length of him. He saw the girl use his weight against him, flip him over, and send him tumbling to the ground. [break][break] His jaw went a little slack. [break][break] Then he wondered if he should even be standing here watching. Should he be running? Was Mar buying him time to flee? But if he left, and Mar got hurt... would that be abandoning her? He hardly felt the pain in his hand, in his body as he watched. So much hung in this moment. [break][break] Unable to comprehend the best course of action, the inkling just stood there with a stupid look on his face. Whatever Crow did next... would probably decide what needed to be done, for better or worse.
