[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] Sorry for everything. [break][break] How do you look someone in the eyes and tell them you wish it could’ve been different? That you never wanted to do it? That you wished you were never born, so that you’d have never done such a horrible thing? [break][break] The little gift box was all he had. It had been years. He had been collecting things for the box for years and he still knew deep down it meant nothing compared to a life that was lost. [break][break] He had spoken to Lily only once after Jack died. It was after his rehab. He had gone as deep into the Octoling territory that he dared to talk to her face-to-face. She had somehow forgiven him, but that was it. He hadn’t gone to visit her again. Couldn’t. Not because he was afraid of the Octolings, but because he was afraid of himself. [break][break] He was just going to leave the box on Lily’s doorstep and leave. That was all he was here to do. Then he could let this part of himself go. Or at least, try to. [break][break] Concealing himself was difficult, especially knowing how strongly Octoling prejudice burned. He deserved their scorn and admonishment. He didn’t want to hide that he was an Inkling. He just knew he could likely be attacked or even killed if he was too bold. So he simply tucked his tentacles under a hat and wore a pair of sunglasses as he passed the streets. But anyone who looked at him long enough could easily tell he was an Inkling with a very poor disguise. A poorly-disguised inkling who limped along with a prosthetic leg, holding a mysterious looking box.[break][break] Suspicious. [break][break] Easy prey.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It wasn't often that Crow visited this part of town. After all, there was rarely anything to be seen, and even fewer things to do. He'd no connections with any of the families living here, and he didn't particularly care to try and make any. Doubtless he wouldn't have anything in common with them, apart from simply being their kind.
As far as Octolings went, they lived peaceful, easy lives. At times he thought they were oblivious to the true nature of their situation; that they'd been sealed away underground by an inferior race a full century ago, the miserable location they called 'home' practically falling to pieces around them - and they seemed content to live that way, careless to the fact. He didn't envy them.
For all his dislike of the boulevard's inhabitants, though, it did make for a good place to walk, particularly at night. It was certainly quieter and more solitary than the other parts of the city after hours, and the ideal location to unwind when he wasn't on the job. Most nights, that is - but perhaps not tonight.
Several yards off, something passing underneath a nearby streetlamp caught his attention, and he lifted his gaze, interest piqued.
Not something - someone.
While peculiar that someone would be out so late, especially in a place like this, Crow didn't question it much at first, and nearly disregarded Khyran's presence entirely. That is, until he caught sight of the noticeable limp with which Khy walked. Hesitating visibly, the Octoling slowed to a stop, knitting his brow. His eyes grazed over the stranger's prosthetic limb for a moment, his previous interest returning, and Crow allowed his gaze to wander, taking immediate notice of the hat and sunglasses the mysterious figure wore. More curious than the fact that he was out at night was that he felt the need to wear sunglasses at night - or underground, for that matter.
Subconsciously, he began to follow from a distance, and instinctively went to grab his weapon, though seemed to remember quickly enough that he didn't have it with him. No need. He was sure he could handle the stranger just fine with his bare hands if he had to. Closer inspection began to arouse suspicion going beyond Crow's initial assumptions. No -- this wasn't just some gang member or troublemaker, was it? It was something else entirely.
He felt some terrible mixture of disgust and amusement well up from within him.
Crow's lips twitched, a faint smile forming there upon his face. He had to fight back a bout of disbelieving laughter. Careless to conceal himself now, he stepped out from the shadows and started at a languid pace towards Khy, tucking either of his hands into his coat pocket.
"Well, now, what's all the hurry about?" he began, raising his voice slightly so as to catch the veteran's attention. His tone of voice suggested he was meeting up with an old friend, rather than speaking to someone belonging to the species he hated most dearly. "You can't possibly have anywhere you need to be this late." | commentary |

[break][break]
Khyran knew he was being followed long before the Octoling revealed himself. His war training had sharpened his senses to a razor's edge. It didn't matter that the war was long behind him- he still relived them every night. When he heard the footsteps, his pulse drummed in his throat. He tried to steady his breaths and slowed his pace. Perhaps he should've worried more about his disguize. Whoever this was saw the Inkling he haphazardly tried to conceal.
[break][break]
When the Octoling finally spoke, he stopped walking. He didn't turn to face him. Instead, he raised his hands, the box still clenched in them, to show he was unarmed.
[break][break]
By Crow's voice he couldn't tell how old he was. So he simply said, in a voice deceptively calm: "I know this looks suspicious. You're free to follow me to my destination and look inside this box. It's not a bomb or anything, it's just a gift for a friend."
[break][break]
Inside, he was afraid.
[break][break]
Not that he might be hurt, no. He was afraid of having to face an Octoling like this, with a package so precious to him. He didn't know why, but he could feel the prejudice in the stranger's voice, and he knew it was justified. Yes, this stranger would be justified in his anger, and Khyran knew he couldn't do anything about it.
[break][break]
All he wanted was to be sure this box got to Lily.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]When the stranger's immediate response was to come to an abrupt stop and lift either of his hands in the air, Crow's expression adopted some amount of surprise. The Inkling's words caught him all the more off guard, and for a moment, he hesitated, the amusement upon his face waning along with his smile. He wasn't entirely sure what he'd been expecting, but it certainly hadn't been that.
How very straightforward of him.
Crow narrowed his eyes, a skeptical way about him now, and rounded on Khyran, allowing a few moments to further scrutinize him up close, though he was sure to maintain a fair amount of distance between them, should he decide to try anything. Eventually, he returned his gaze to the Inkling's face, and a smirk broke his focused facade.
"... A 'friend', is it?" he finally echoed, sounding equal parts amused and bewildered. His stare lingered upon Khy's face for several moments longer. Then, ducking his head, he gave a breathy laugh and shook his head, as if unable to believe what he was hearing. "Well, isn't that touching? It's quite the sentiment, I'll admit, but... you'll have to forgive me. I don't think I follow."
His features adopted a more serious edge, and in its midst there seemed to be some kind of naive confusion upon his face, feigned though it was, as if he was merely hoping to better understand Khy. "I don't recall people of your kind... being a friend to mine. Perhaps I missed something." For a moment, Crow's attention wandered from the Inkling's face to his prosthetic leg, and he appeared almost sympathetic before he returned his gaze to Khyran's face.

[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] A droplet of sweat trailed down Khy's brow. His tongue flicked out to wet his dry, cracked lips. He remained standing there, frozen, as Crow scrutenized him under a magnifying glass, like some rat in a maze. When the Octoling came into view, he could see how young he was. Probably not even twenty. For some reason, that made it even harder. He was about as old as Jack was at the time he died. [break][break] He had no grounds to defend himself, nor should he. The Octoling here was the one who was justified, not him. For all he knew, Crow could pull a gun and shoot him where he stood, and Lily would never see him again. He could taste the tension, he knew this young man meant him harm. [break][break] "I... I know it sounds crazy, kid." He managed. "...Before the war, Lily and I... we were best friends. I never- ... I never hated your kind. I never wanted to hurt anyone. I know it's hard to believe, but if you come with me- ... if Lily sees me, she'll back me up. I promise." [break][break] Here he was, a veteran, begging for his life to a young man, hardly on the cusp of adulthood. He sighed heavily. Noting Crow observing his prosthetic, he answered in a blank tone. [break][break] "No one did this to me but myself."

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]In the same way that Khy could sense that he was in danger, Crow could sense his fear. It rolled off of him in waves, heavy in the air, but heavier still was another emotion in the Inkling's voice, written plainly there upon his face. It was a feeling he couldn't quite pinpoint, and though he'd no name for it, he could see it like an invisible weight upon the stranger's shoulders, wearing him down, tiring him out.
Whatever it was, Crow felt certain he deserved it.
Khyran's words willed a humorless laugh from his lips, but it ended just as quickly as it had begun. He grinned incredulously. "You're even stupider than you look if you think 'kid' is the proper way to refer to me - I'd give you my name if I deemed you worthy of hearing it, but..." He extended either of his hands, as if gesturing to the very situation Khy was in, and then finished in a lowered voice, "That won't be necessary, now, will it?"
A pointed silence followed his words. Then, dropping his hands to his sides, he little more than smiled at the Inkling, an almost pitying air about him. "The word of someone who is a friend to you is just as meaningless to me as the word of anyone belonging to your filthy race - and as meaningless as your supposed intentions. Spare me." He tilted his head slightly to the side, looking contemplative. "I'll admit I'm glad you have half the intelligence not to hate us. Why should you, after all?"
Suddenly, the facade of friendliness fell away. He frowned, and his eyes flashed dangerously. "It's a shame your lack of hatred does not negate mine." Crow stepped forward until he was merely an arm's length away, his gaze never wavering, never leaving Khyran's face. "Give me one reason not to kill you, Inkling." He spoke the word as if it was an insult, his voice lowered. "Beg if you must." | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"][attr="class","robot"] [break][break] Guilt was a noose. [break][break] And Crow kicked the chair. [break][break] Khyran felt it constricting his windpipe, tearing at his flesh, threatening to snap his neck. His breaths came sharp and constricted, and the box in his hands trembled. Then, slowly, his arms lowered. [break][break] "Nothing can take away the pain. Your kind have been suffering a long time, and we've benefited from your suffering." He said in a calm, practiced tone. "I did come here seeking peace and mean no harm, but I still am an intruder. I am trespassing, and I do not deserve to be here. You have every right to want to kill me. I won't stop you." [break][break] But then, he slowly extended the box towards Crow, as if any sudden movements would result in his brains splattered on the nearest wall. His head lowered as if in a bow as he offered the box towards the man, palms turned upward, his good knee bending a little. [break][break] "Before you kill me, open the box. Please. It's all I ask."

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Again, Khy did the precise opposite of what Crow had been expecting - and again it caught him off guard.
He didn't argue, or even beg for his life to be spared, though he did seem tormented by something. Whether it was the fear Crow had sensed before or that other, heavier emotion, he couldn't be certain. Regardless of what it was, it didn't matter. He'd never encountered anything like it -- or anyone, for that matter. His uncertainty made him hesitate. The way the Inkling so readily accepted his own death, even going so far as to say that he deserved it - it didn't make sense. The intensity of his expression faded, a genuine confusion and even some kind of frustration rising up in its place.
Starting somewhat when Khy extended the box forward, however slowly, he took an abrupt step back, feeling suddenly defensive, as if he'd lost control over the situation. A peculiar anger began to rise up within him in response, and though he'd no desire to reveal his loss of composure, it didn't appear that he had much of any say in the matter. His expression contorted with defiance.
"What--?" he began, but abruptly fell silent. Then, bristling, he retorted vehemently, "You think I'm an idiot? That damn box isn't going to save you - and neither is false sympathy. I don't want your pity. I want you dead!" Balling his hand into a fist, he delivered a crippling punch to the Inkling's exposed chest, his blood running hot with fury. | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] He watched Crow's expression change, watched how the Octoling battled with him, battled with what he said. He didn't mean to cause him pause or give him any sort of crisis- he really didn't. It was just the truth. It was how he felt. He was a man of his word, and he would be until his end. [break][break] He didnt know what he had been expecting, though. Perhaps some part of him hoped that if Crow saw the contents of the box, he would realize it was a time capsule. He would peer back into history, and see what the Inklings and Octolings used to be. Perhaps it would be enough to convince him of his case, to let him go and give it to Lily. [break][break] A fool's hope, in the end. The punch came and it was not unexpected, but it hurt all the same. There was a power behind it that Khy was not, however, prepared for. It hit him with such vigor that he staggered. His arms went to his chest, as if to protect himself, but it was really just to protect the box. Also a fool's hope. He doubted the box would last or reach Lily's arms at this point, but he still wanted it safe. [break][break] He wondered why the Octoling punched him instead of shot him, though. Did he even have a gun? Or was it his intent to make him suffer slowly? It didn't matter, in the end. Khy just stood there, breathing hard, but offering Crow a faint smile. [break][break] "It's okay. Do what you need to. I understand." He managed, wheezing from the impact of the punch. "Nobody will be waiting for me back home. No one will come looking for me. It'll be a clean kill. Nothing to trace back to you. You'll be alright."

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The impact of the blow, while sickly satisfying, merely added fuel to the fire, left him yearning for more. He exhaled harshly, itching to see the damage he'd caused, but he was met instead with strained words of understanding, or perhaps even encouragement.
Disbelief gripped his expression, lips parting, and for a moment he struggled to make sense of things - but it was gone in an instant, consumed by the rage stirring in his chest, burning more strongly still when met with Khy's reassurance.
His anger promised the next hit would be the one that sated the feeling. Rather than managing a reply, he surrendered to the searing emotion, if only in hopes that doing so would make it fade. Clenching his teeth, he hissed on an outtake of breath, "Shut up." This time, he delivered a swift, unrelenting blow at Khy's face, aiming to knock him off of his feet. | commentary |

[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] He saw it coming, but didn't dodge. Crow's fist smashed into his face with such force he felt something pop in his jaw. It threw him back and he met a jarring impact with the earth. His prosthetic loosened in its place. The world flipped upside down and the ceiling traded places with the earth. It was still spinning, even though he stopped moving. [break][break] He coughed and spat out a mouthful of inky blood. He barely felt it. [break][break] "Ah... ahaha..." In any other circumstance, it might have sounded like a laugh, and he smiled too. But here, it was a sob dressed differently. There was no humor there, no sign of enjoyment. Just... resigned. He let himself go limp on the ground, his arms splaying at his sides and his eye drifting shut. [break][break] So this is how it goes... getting murdered practically on Lily's doorstep. A very fitting end. He wasn't sure if he wanted her to know he died like this, though. Would it be poetic justice, or would it just hurt her worse? [break][break] He couldn't say. [break][break] If you see a blue-ringed octoling named Lily, tell her I miss her. He wanted to say, but even trying to open his mouth hurt now. His jaw hung slack. He barely felt it.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Stretching his fingers outward, he shook his hand as if to rid it of some filth it might have caught upon touching Khyran's skin and dropped it back to his side. His gaze drew languidly over the Inkling, and for a moment, he did feel somewhat sated. That he'd stopped talking was certainly an improvement, and to see him sprawled helplessly upon his back was every bit as satisfying as he'd hoped it would be.
But it wasn't enough.
Lips tugging back in the beginnings of a smile, he stepped to the man's side, looking little more than amused by the state he was in. "Why so eager to die?" Crow finally asked, sounding slightly winded, though not from exertion so much as from anger. "'No one will be waiting for me. No one will come looking.'" he echoed, then fell silent for a moment, laughing softly to himself. "Perhaps you want to be put out of your misery. I don't blame you."
Attention wandering from the Inkling's face to the gift held weakly in the palm of his hand, his lids fell somewhat, as if in thought. "Surely it isn't because you hate what you are. I'd be giving you too much credit to assume you were that self aware. It must be something else." Crow paused for a moment, as if thinking, and then feigned some realization. "No -- if the problem isn't what you are, it must be who you are." Lifting his brow, he glanced briefly back at Khy's face. "So what must you have done that was so horrible apart from belonging to the race you do?"
Languorously, he lifted his foot and for a moment allowed it to hover just above the gift Khyran had brought with him. "Does it have anything to do with this?" he asked, but a part of him already knew the answer. He pressed his foot down to hold the box and his hand in place, but not enough to damage it. His gaze lingered expectantly upon Khy's face, an eyebrow arched inquiringly. | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] He was expecting to be kicked and stepped on and spit on as soon as he was on the ground, but no. This kid seemed to be biding his time, drawing it out, making it last. Khyran couldn't say he blamed him for that. [break][break] He heard Crow's footsteps echoing in the dark as he circled. His own sunken abdomen rose and fell with labored breaths. It struck him how quiet it was down here. Sure, there were always the distant noises, city sounds echoing in the endless underground. But here, right now, it was almost suffocating. [break][break] In Inkopolis it didn't matter, night or day, it was always loud. Streets alive with the hums and honks of traffic. Distant music night and day. Lights and motion and life everywhere. It was the opposite here. It was still alive, but a different kind of life, and one so set apart from Inkling life, Khyran knew he was a fool even to assume he could get down here and back in one piece. [break][break] He coughed. Tried to close his mouth. It hurt badly. As slowly as he dared to move his hand, he'd grasp his chin and jerk his jaw in place. A sickening pop and it was done. At least he could stop drooling now. [break][break] Still he waited for Crow to kill him, and still he was alive. He watched as Crow neared the box and instinctively tried to move the box closer to his side. But then there was weight upon it and he couldn't move his hand. He was a little worried now. He had known long ago that it was very unlikely that Crow would listen to anything he said. Knowing how important this box was to him was probably enough to spur the Octoling into destroying it. But Khyran couldn't pretend it wasn't important. Was there any glimmer of reason left in this boy? [break][break] "I hate everything I am, sir. Everything I was forced to do in the war. I don't care what happens to me. But please... don't... don't hurt Lily more than she already has been. Kill me if you must, but please... please don't destroy this box..." [break][break] Probably not.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]His stare was trained steadfastly upon Khyran's face when he managed a response, but the words which left his lips ceased to will any kind of emotion from Crow - that is, any emotion apart from amusement. It revealed itself in the form of a halfhearted smile, and had it not been for the fact that he was so clearly the one tormenting Khy, the gesture could have been mistaken for one of genuine pity.
"You keep on saying her name like it means something to me," he finally said in a withdrawn voice, sounding almost exasperated. "That 'Lily' of yours can die for all I care. Consider yourself lucky she's not one of your kind, or I'd have her killed myself." The smile fell from his lips, a look of feigned contemplation upon his face now. "But I suppose a traitor is no better... You've been compliant enough, though, so I'll tell you what: you can die on both of your behalves. How does that sound?"
Without waiting for a response, his smile returned and he continued, a complacent air about him, "I think... that's more than generous of me to offer, given what you've done. As for this box of yours," Crow glanced indicatively to the object in Khy's hand. "You know what they say about material things." He pressed his boot down with deliberate force upon both the gift and the Inkling's hand, aiming to crush it underfoot. | commentary |

[break][break] His hand stung and tingled, blood welling in his palm. He wondered if he'd broken something. He wasn't sure. [break][break] I guess she'll never those letters it now. I shouldn't have waited this long. [break][break]
