It wasn't often that Cas explored the outskirts - they were notoriously dangerous, after all, but that wasn't why he tended to avoid them. The trip itself was an enormous hassle. Finding transportation was nearly impossible after the sun went down, and walking from his house wasn't very well an option. Tonight, though, he'd been lucky enough to catch the bus before it stopped running.
There were plenty of creeps around, sure, but they usually didn't do anything other than glare; wasn't like looks could kill, anyway, so it didn't matter.
Of course, Casper wasn't completely inept, so he'd been sure to pack his gun - concealed from view within his backpack, that is. He had a feeling he'd be likelier to attract negative attention if he waltzed around with it in his hand - not to mention it was technically illegal to carry. It was a good thing cops didn't exactly frequent the downtown, but then, they were probably just as scared of it as everyone else was.
He'd been lucky enough to have never encountered anything extremely dangerous, himself. Certainly he'd been verbally harassed now and again, but people had always backed off before things had a chance to escalate beyond that. Casper was far from intimidating, but talking tough was usually more than enough to get by. The outskirts were the only place he'd ever seen so many people who weren't inklings, but not all of them were impossible to reason with.
In fact, the outskirts were home to the best clubs he'd ever been to.
Pulling his headphones around his neck, he lifted his face from his phone. It had been dark for a few hours already, but the street he was on felt somehow... emptier than it should have been. Granted, Cas wasn't in the liveliest of places, but things were usually livelier than this. He hadn't been leered at by the occasional passing drunkard in at least ten minutes, so something was definitely off.
Hesitating, he eventually slowed to a stop. Visibly cautious, Casper tucked his phone into his pocket and surveyed his surroundings, but nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary. It was eerily quiet. Try as he might to shake the uneasy feeling which had settled in his chest, it wouldn't leave him. Allowing another few seconds to pass, he eventually shook his head, trying to dismiss the worry he felt, and continued forward. He was probably just imagining things.
Little more than a minute passed, however, before the silence was broken. "You lost?" The voice came from directly behind him, nearly in his ear, and before he could so much as turn to glimpse who it belonged to, the speaker wrapped an arm around his neck and pressed the muzzle of a gun into his side. His heart skipped a beat, a look of alarm gripping his features, and he tensed, a startled gasp pulling into his lungs.
Her grip, while firm enough to keep him in place, was loose enough for him to breathe, and he lifted both of his hands to grip her forearm, though more out of impulse than any kind of attempt to free himself. His thoughts were racing. Any protests he might have uttered were stifled by fear, and in the midst of it, all he could manage was a shaky "What do you want?"
Visibly unconcerned, the octoling merely laughed, her nonchalance striking in comparison to his apprehension. Casper winced at the sudden sound, clenching his teeth. "Nothing you can give me," she replied, a condescending note in her voice. "This isn't personal, so don't take it to heart!" The gun clicked and he tensed, instinctively clenching his eyes shut.
(i s2g ill come up with another title later when i can think of one that's more accurate than this one)

The desperation to get away from Father grew with every day that passed since that incident. Some would view it as inevitable, after all, xe was seventeen, now. One more year, and xe'd be able to get out on xis own if xe so desired. Not that Father would approve of xim cutting all contact with him...but...Vincent would be lying if xe said the idea wasn't crossing xis mind a bit more lately. Xe was conflicted about the subject. There was always going to be a part of xim that wanted to make Father proud, and never disappoint him.
And yet...after meeting Mar for the second time, xe couldn't help but realize the effect all the grueling training was having on xis mental health, and social life. These were, as far as xe knew from the opinions of others, important things to a young adult. If that's what xe needed to feel some form of happiness, xe would strive for it. ...Even if that meant that xe'd have to do something Father wouldn't approve of, it was him who had raised xim after all. Surely he'd expect Vin to think on xis own.
Maybe he wouldn't mind it. Maybe he'd like that Vincent showed some initiative. He had expressed some interest in Vin being a leader, or sub-leader for xis inevitable next team. Shaking xis head, Vincent forced ximself back to the present. This was neither the place nor time to get lost in thought, and xe sent a sharp glance towards xis surroundings, searching for anything out of place.
The outskirts of the city tended to be good for target practice, as well as learning how to dodge prickly situations and, not to mention, people. Father usually accompanied xim on trips here, making sure xe didn't get too much harassment from any of the lingering predators.
But xe was fairly confident xe could handle this place on xis own now, especially with the charger weapon on xis back, and a light shooter weapon to xis side. The law meant little to Vin, the only important rules were that in Turf Wars. This came from a lesson from Father that war was always merciless. However, to draw less attention to ximself, Vincent always took the roofs of the broken down houses, to get a vintage point of the area.
Xe'd only been settled down for a few minutes or so, keeping an eye out for any opportunities when xe saw a lone Inkling, about xis age, in the middle of the street in front of xim. What was much more interesting than that though, was a semi-similar figure cloaked in shadow, moving along the walls. Narrowing xis eyes as the figure began to creep up on the Inkling, Vincent began charging, holding steady. That didn't look close to any of the other predators xe'd seen. In fact, xe'd say it looked like an...
Octoling. That had just taken out a gun and captured the Inkling by the arm. Gritting xis teeth, Vincent felt xis blood start to pump, making sure xe had a clear shot even within the darkness. Xis bright green eyes widened a fraction as xis pupils contracted in utter focus. There was a quick exchange of words going on as xis weapon reached full charge, and the Octoling had stopped jostling the Inkling around, and they were now still. Perfect.
Splat.
It was not the Inkling that ended up harmed, but the Octoling, thanks to Vincent. Relaxing as the danger was neutralized, xe stood. Xe then charged up a super jump, and it was not long before xe landed ximself in front of the Inkling, some green ink in xis wake as xe shifted back to humanoid form. Straightening up, and looking upon the civilian xe saw --
A face xe had seen before. Frowning slightly, xe realized xe didn't know the spunky cyan inkling's name, despite the fact that he might very well be Mar's teammate now. "Oh, it's you." Xe said before xe could stop ximself. Vincent moved carefully around xim, examining the spot where the Octoling had been before being splatted moments before. Xe crouched down, remembering the skatepark again.
Vin's frown increased. "...I wish you hadn't seen that..." The words left xis mouth, and without context provided it was unclear what xe was talking about. To be honest, xe was talking about what had happened at the skatepark and the Octoling. No inexperienced Inkling like this boy deserved to get targeted by these things, and Vincent did desperately wish that other day hadn't happened.
Looking to him, xe straightened ximself again. Xe raised a single brow, curious about the other, calm and relaxed. A contrast to how xe had been the last time they had met. "Why are you here?" Surely Casper didn't have the same reasons as Vin for being in the outskirts, seeing as xe had only just started to get an interest in his own Turf War team with that other one. Remembering the yellow inkling, xe nearly flushed in embarrassment at the memory of the insult xe'd spouted at the man. Enough of that.
"Please don't tell me you're looking for members."

A startlingly familiar bang resounded, followed shortly by a bursting noise, and he flinched.
It took him what felt like an eternity to realize that he was still standing, that the splatter of ink which now clung to his jacket and skin didn't belong to him, and he finally opened his eyes, a shaky breath wrung from his throat. The stranger's arm wasn't around his neck anymore, and a clattering noise at his feet alerted him to the fact that her weapon was no longer pressed against his side, either. The confusion he felt couldn't quite overcome the shock, however, and rather than try and process everything, Casper fell to his knees, legs too weak to keep him upright, and gripped at the fabric of his jacket, heart racing in his chest. His chest felt too tight, the breath sawing in and out of his lungs, and he clutched his jacket tighter still, leaning inward.
He tried to force the situation from his mind - of course, it didn't do him any good. The delayed realization of what had just happened was hitting him full force, and he felt his eyes stinging with tears. His thoughts were frantic, but it didn't occur to him that someone must have saved him until he heard a voice directly ahead of him, at the sound of which he visibly started, lifting his face. When he glimpsed Vincent's face, he felt a stab of disbelief even in the midst of his shock, and for a moment, little more than stared at xim before shaking his head and turning his face away again. Just his luck.
Everything Vin said took several seconds to process, and even once Casper understood, he couldn't manage a halfway coherent reply. Cringing, he narrowed his eyes and stared at the ground, trying to steady his breathing with little avail - the frantic thudding of his heart seemed only to be making things worse. At Vincent's inquiry, Casper weakly lifted the palm of his hand in xis direction and replied in a thin voice broken by intermittent wheezing, "Okay, just -- could you just shut up for a second?" He dropped his hand to his side again, swearing under his breath, then fell silent for another few moments.
When finally he managed to catch his breath, Casper slowly righted himself, lifting the hand from his jacket to rub his eyes, and turned slightly to face the splatter of ink beside him, the gun which had been pressed against his side just moments ago settled in the midst of it. His mouth felt dry. As much as he wanted to distance himself, he couldn't bring himself to stand. Without responding to Vin's question, Cas eventually asked, forcing as firm a voice as he could manage, "Was that -- that was an inkling?"

Because of xis family's history, this was not the first time xe'd heard of, or for that matter, seen a predator go down in such a way. Xe raised a brow at Casper's over the top reaction, unsure of how xe should comfort him, if at all. It was probably best to just like him deal with it on his own, especially when he wheezily snapped at Vin. In contrast to their first meeting, Vincent took little offense to the command, and followed it, quieting down. Blinking once as xe let Casper compose himself on his own, xe looked down to the weapon on the ground.
Just as xe suspected, it was an octoshot. "...Hm. You're welcome." With a displeased expression, Vincent kicked the weapon away, out of the ink. After that, Cas finally came to for the most part, steeling himself as he asked Vincent a question. Xe gave the boy an incredulous look. "Would an inkling ambush you for no reason in the middle of the night?" The Carcer asked, tone dry. "If that's really what you think, I'm a bit worried for your lifestyle..."
Wit aside, Vin dropped the charade only a moment later and answered honestly. "It was an octoling. Looks like a few of them are getting a little more confident, if they were around here. I wouldn't worry about it, though." Shaking xis head, Vincent thought for a moment, bringing a hand to xis chin. Xe took a small step forward towards Casper.
Glancing around cautiously, Vincent put away xis charger only to switch to xis shooter. "Then again, they might not have come here alone..." Crouching slightly, Vincent extended a hand towards Cas, offering to help pull him back up to xis feet. "We should get going. It was..." Xe paused, having to search xis memory for a little while longer than xe would have liked. "Cas, right? Sorry about the other day. 'Lot on my mind." Vincent shrugged it off, a bit irritated that xe might have to make the apology yet again when xe saw that yellow inkling, but xe supposed it was for the better, in the end.

He could scarcely manage offense at anything Vincent said, and again fell silent for a few moments. Now that his initial panic had passed, a peculiar numbness had begun to take hold of him. An octoling, xe'd said, but the words didn't register somehow. Casper's gaze traveled from the ground and to his sleeve, where his right side was still wet with the octoling's blood. He stared, feeling caught in a daze, and Vin's words reached him as though he was underwater. An octoling had tried to kill him just now. He'd never seen one in his life until that precise moment - hadn't even thought much of their existence. Certainly he'd heard of them, but they didn't harbor much importance to him at all. Any mentions of them had always been theoretical; he found it difficult to believe he'd just encountered one.
He found it difficult to believe that one had just tried to kill him.
Vincent, on the other hand, didn't seem even remotely fazed. Perhaps this was a very mundane situation and Casper had yet to realize it. Given how composed and calm the green inkling was, it certainly would have seemed that way. He appeared as calm as he had when they'd first met at the skatepark a few days ago; before he'd almost completely lost it and nearly knocked Casper unconscious with his skateboard, that is. He couldn't understand for the life of him how Vincent had been more upset by his insults and shoving than xe was by ending someone's life. There was no telling what xe'd been through to become the way xe was. That much was certain.
It was at the sound of xis voice that finally Casper lifted his gaze, visibly stunned. He wanted to say there was no way of knowing who or what, exactly, had attacked him - especially not in a place like this - but instead he kept quiet, a part of him still trying to process the situation. While he understood what Vin was saying, he couldn't find it in himself to muster a reply. A distant thought occurred to him in the midst of everything; that he couldn't go home in the state he was in, not without risking Lia seeing him. Without a doubt, she would worry. She'd always been perceptive, sometimes to the point that it was a bit irritating.
Again Vincent's voice drew him back to the present moment, and he blinked, realizing xe was outstretching a hand to help him up. At first, Casper hesitated, still unsure of how he ought to feel about the inkling. When xe continued, however, a look of surprise shifted his expression. It took him a moment longer than he'd have liked to conceal it. At first, he didn't respond. Instead, he reached decisively forward to take xis hand, realizing only when he'd outstretched his own that it was shaking. Perhaps the intensity of his emotions had faded, but it seemed his body had some catching up to do.
Closing his fingers around Vincent's hand, he stood, albeit with some difficulty, then dropped his arm back to his side, looking down the street. Then, finally, he replied. "Yeah, it's -- it's fine. You kinda just saved my ass, anyway, so..." His voice, while thankfully more composed than it had been when he'd last spoken, still wavered a bit when it left his lips. He drew a breath to steady himself and continued, though still without looking at xim, "Thanks. Sorry I sorta... y'know..." Trailing off, he gestured loosely with one hand, unsure of how to finish. Rather than complete his thought, however, he looked back at Vincent and began before he could stop himself, "What were you doing here?"

Curious, Vincent's eyes searched Casper's expression for anything out of the ordinary as he was finally helped to his feet. However, xe couldn't find anything, other than what was expected: the lingering desperation to calm himself down, and the surprise that Vin had helped him after how they had met. Though xe was grateful for the blue inkling's apology, xe only gave a noncommittal sound in response, seeing as there were more important things to think about now.
When xe caught Cas's eye, xe instinctively glanced away to the street, as Father didn't usually like it when xe made direct eye contact. With Mar, it had been much easier -- she was the complete opposite of Father. But with men, especially those that were taller than xim (Father typically towered over xim at any opportunity), it was hard to...function properly.
Maybe that had been just one of the many reasons for xis outburst in the Skatepark, despite the fact that it was useless trying to analyze what the cause for that had been, since it was already done. Taking in a breath, Vin began a slow walk down the street, expecting Casper to follow should he want to get out of danger. "Target practice." Xe said simply, with a small shrug. "I guess now I got what I came here for." Sighing, xe tried again to question Casper, since he seemed to be calmed now and was up for asking Vin about the situation. "Where are you headed?"
Xe stopped for a moment to glance over xis shoulder at Casper, though xis gaze didn't linger for more than necessary. "I can stick around with you." The green inkling offered, before a small smirk came onto xis face, unnoticeable as xis head was turned away again. "Unless you wanna run into trouble like that again, without someone to save you this time."

He didn't pay much of any mind to the fact that Vin diverted xis gaze so quickly. Of course, Casper hadn't allowed his own to linger for very long, either. It had been unnerving enough looking at xim before, what with the way xe carried himself - in light of what just happened, though, there seemed to be plenty reason for intimidation. When Vin started down the street, he hesitated for a moment, his newfound apprehension urging him to survey his surroundings before he exposed his back again. He severely hoped what Vincent had said about there being others wasn't true. One octoling was already one too many.
And, whether or not he wanted to admit it to himself, the thought of what had happened to the one he'd just encountered was enough to make his skin crawl. Octoling or not -- potential killer or not -- he didn't want to see that happen to anyone ever again. It was different when he'd seen it before, or even when it had happened to him - at least in turf war there was no question of whether or not someone would come back. Casper pushed the thought from his mind, feeling his earlier panic threaten to return. It would probably be best to forget.
Fighting his unease with little success, Casper finally followed after Vincent, though keeping a fair amount of distance between them, and fixed his eyes on the ground beneath his feet, only occasionally glancing behind him. It wasn't until Vin replied that he glanced xis way. The second Casper processed xis words, the color drained from his face, lips parting in disbelief. Target practice? It was all he could do not to continue staring, and only after a few moments of blatant gawking did he tear his attention away, a distinct nervousness about him in spite of how he tried to conceal it. "Oh, uh -- that's... that's... normal," Casper finally said, the words slow and vaguely cautious.
Only it wasn't normal - at all. What kind of person used other people for target practice? He couldn't decide between feeling intrigued or afraid for his life, even if Vin had just saved it. At xis question, though, Casper paused, trying to stifle his uncertainty. "I was gonna go clubbing or something, but I don't think I'm interested anymore." He gave a thin sigh, trying for a smile but falling terribly short. "I'd rather just be sleeping." When Vincent offered to accompany him, he hesitated again, unaware of the smirk upon xis face, then cast xim a skeptical glance, feeling a twinge of offense in spite of himself. He pressed his lips to a thin line and turned his face away, crossing his arms. "I'm not totally helpless," he replied, sounding more defensive than actually angry. "You just caught me at a bad time."

Shaking xis head with a light chuckle, Vincent came to a stop for a moment, turning towards Cas. "Sleeping?" Vin was almost tempted to say something along the lines of "typical", but caught ximself when xe realized, that xe didn't really know that much about Casper. Looking to xim with a quizzical expression, Vincent gave a small nod towards xis defensive words, though the truth was xe'd barely listened in the midst of xis thoughts. "I misjudged you, Cas." The green inkling told him sincerely.
"You're rather harmless." Xe said it as if it were a compliment, and to Vincent, it was. Too many people, including xis Father, meant harm to xim. It was nice to see someone who, even though they talked big, had no intentions to face off with Vincent. At least, not outside of Turf War. Knowing that xe should probably explain that thought process further out loud, xe did a moment later. "It's a good thing. You should be careful though. Many people, like that Octoling, would take advantage of that."
Trying to take a social cue for once, Vincent slapped Casper on the back, admittedly rather awkward as xe had only seen the motion before, never used it before. There was a genuine small smile on xis face before it disappeared completely, expression turning stony and unimpressed again. "Let's go." Xe started walking again, with a new destination in mind, the bus to uptown.

[nospaces] | live a life you will remember [break] these are the nights that never die when you get older, your wild heart will live for younger days. |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] Taken off guard by the sound of Vincent's laughter, Cas was abruptly torn from his thoughts and paused to stare at the other Inkling, visibly shocked. That was... odd. He hadn't thought Vin incapable of happiness, let alone amusement. The precise second his surprise passed, however, Casper realized xe must have been laughing at something he'd said, and his confusion left in favor of defensiveness once again. The feeling only increased when Vincent continued to call him 'harmless' and, staring in disbelief, he parted his lips so as to protest, but xe had already clarified - not that it had helped Cas feel any less insulted. [break][break] Any words he might have said in his defense were stifled when Vincent slapped him on the back, however, the gesture enough to both jostle him and force him from his stupor. At a loss, he stared after xim as the uncharacteristically friendly smile faded from xis lips, xis expression becoming steely a second later as if by clockwork. When xe started off, Casper continued to stand in place for a few moments, his features caught between a grimace and a disbelieving stare. Had that even been the same person? [break][break] "Uh... right," he finally said - a miserable attempt at a suitable response, but an attempt nonetheless. Incapable of managing anything more than an uncomfortable laugh and cough, he forced a smile more out of fear for his own life than any desire to return Vincent's odd gesture of 'friendliness' and started slowly after xim, feigned amusement draining from his features a mere second later. He stared at the back of Vin's head, squinting cautiously, and eyed xim in the way one might observe a wild animal. Xe was certainly... an odd person. Scratching absentmindedly at xis neck with one hand, Vincent continued down the street, making sure to keep an eye for any more surprises. Though xe was usually comfortable in silence (the awkwardness of this said silence didn't reach Vincent, xe'd always had a trouble with...reading the atmosphere) but today xe felt...oddly talkative. "So. As I was saying. The team." Thinking back to the other day in the mall, xe made a small gesture with xis head. "Mar joined, right?"
For a moment, xe averted xis gaze to the ground. Truth be told, xe envied Casper and Iggy. They had a choice in whether or not they played for fun or for rankings. Vincent was...not so lucky. Without waiting for Casper to answer, xe went on. "That's good. It should help you get started..." Now, however, xe did feel awkward. Not because of the previous silence, but xis own words.
Rubbing the back of xis neck, xe decided to admit some of those thoughts out loud. "You're...kind of lucky, you know that?" Xis heart in xis chest felt heavier than normal. "Back then, just having the courage to stand up to me, when...when you didn't even have a rank, the way you were able to tell me off...my Father didn't raise me that way. I guess it kind of surprised me. I know not everyone's upbringing is the same, but..."
Shoulders slumping slightly, xe shook xis head, focusing on getting to the bus that would take them out of the city's outskirts. "Just, don't lose that, okay? It's alright to have goals set for yourself, but...just...just make sure...they're your own goals." Xe took a breath. "Not born out of pressure from other people. ...Anyways, here we are." Vincent came to a stop at the bus sign and the bench. "You're heading uptown, right?"

[nospaces] | live a life you will remember [break] these are the nights that never die when you get older, your wild heart will live for younger days. |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] There was no denying how strange it seemed for Vincent to be the one trying to initiate conversation between the two of them. Ordinarily, Casper would have been the one filling the silence - he did have a certain gift when it came to rambling, usually regarding things of minimal importance, but the sight of the green Inkling taking out a murderous Octoling without even flinching had certainly been enough to shut him up for at least a few minutes. Vin's presence had already intimidated him, but now it wouldn't be a stretch to say that Casper was legitimately afraid of xim. Of course, he was feeling somewhat less afraid at the moment and a bit more intrigued than anything else. This behavior seemed extremely unlikely given what he'd seen of Vin, even if he hadn't seen much, and a part of him wanted to know what, exactly, was going on in that head of xis. [break][break] Given the direction Vincent was taking things, however, it seemed he wouldn't have to wonder for very long. [break][break] Caught between bafflement and curiosity, Casper listened in awestruck silence as the Inkling spoke. The surprise he felt was almost enough to subdue the offense which rose up within him at Vin's mention of how Mar joining the team would help him 'get started' - almost, but not quite. He barely managed to stifle a scoff in reply. He wasn't that great when it came to Turf War, sure, but it wasn't like Vincent had ever seen him in action. Intriguing though xe was, xe was still just as pompous as xe'd been when they'd first met, what with how quick he was to jump to conclusions like that. He eventually decided it wasn't worth arguing with xim over. [break][break] Xis next words caught Casper off guard. He made a face. Courage? Regardless of the urge he felt to cut Vincent off, he allowed xim to finish, feeling more curious by the second. Xis 'father', huh? He guessed that had been who was shouting at xim over the phone that day. When the Inkling continued, however, he was met with a sudden realization - he suddenly felt foolish for having not understood the nature of things sooner. He tried to smooth the surprise out of his expression and, upon nearing the bus stop, slowed his pace, glancing away from Vin with an unreadable expression. It made some kind of sense now - why xe was the way that xe was. Casper was sure he'd only skimmed the surface of things, but he knew enough to put two and two together. [break][break] Absently, he replied, "Yeah, but the bus doesn't run around here this late at night. I wasn't planning on leaving so soon - guess I'll just walk." Stifling a sigh, he folded his arms more snugly over his chest and fell silent for another few seconds. Then, without looking at Vin, he said suddenly, "Thanks, by the way... I think. Kind of a weird compliment, but I'll take it." He worked his mouth in thought, frowning. "It's not how I was raised, though. You shouldn't let someone look down on you or make you feel like dirt -- that's just common sense." [break][break] His lips twitched with the beginnings of a smile and he cast a pointed look Vincent's way, his tone losing some of its seriousness when he continued, "Why the hell would I? I think you're the one who needs to learn to set your own goals, by the sound of it. Not to jump to conclusions or anything, but your dad sounds like a complete dick. Who cares what he thinks, anyway?" He scoffed, looking torn between amusement and something like distaste. "If he's the reason you're out here -- hunting people or whatever -- you could really stand to do your own thing once in awhile. You ever tried, like, I dunno - having fun for once? It's Friday night, dude. I get why I was out here, but seriously. I mean... not that I'm not glad you were here to save my ass." [break][break] OOC COMMENTS: thanks for that SUDDEN ANGST i REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!! As Casper replied, Vincent took a seat on the bench, the bruises on xis legs aching dully from the walk. "Oh, sorry. I didn't know." Xe wasn't exactly the type to take the bus. Setting xis charger down, Vincent sighed, letting Casper go on. After all, he'd listened to Vin ramble even when it was uncharacteristic of xim. Vincent's expression changed quickly into one of shock at what Casper was implying, and then, further more, bluntly stated with his next few sentences. Looking down, Vincent emitted no more than a confused "oh" for a moment, as xe thought on what the blue inkling had said.
"But if I'm not living for Father, then what am I living for?" Vincent asked, before xe could catch ximself. Blinking, xe picked up xis charger, coming to stand again. "I mean..." Uncertain and lost, xe glanced to Casper. "I have a legacy to live up to. If I fail, then I'm nothing -- I'm no one. You mean you don't...have anything like that?" Vincent was confused at the new advice given to xim, and just the thought of doing something against Father's wishes on purpose was...scary.
Terrifying, even. Swallowing the lump in xis throat, Vincent still couldn't look at Casper, looking around -- paranoid, as if Father would hear what xe had to say and come out to punish xim at any minute. "Even if Father's thoughts about me seem unreasonable at times, they're -- they're all I have to base myself off of." Shoulders slumping, Vincent frowned. "They have to be true."
NO PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANY TIME

[attr="class","cas-link"] i'm a bad kid, i'm disastrous i don't know wrong from right [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Conversation was, at the very least, helping to distract him from the situation at hand, even if the person he was talking to still unnerved him to an extent. Cas blinked when Vin took a seat at the bench. Well... he hadn't really been planning on staying, what with the Octolings that might still have been in the area, but when xe began in reply, he stifled the protest he'd meant to voice and instead stared at Vincent, caught between discomfort and uncertainty. As the green Inkling went on, Casper merely listened in silence, increasingly baffled with every word to leave xis lips.
Man, he hadn't been planning on psychoanalyzing Vincent, but xe was wound tighter than anyone he'd ever met - save for Iggy, maybe - and he'd have felt guilty if he just left xim hanging. Giving life advice wasn't really his forte, but surely someone as misguided as Vin needed all the sane guidance xe could get.
By the time xe finished, though, all Casper managed to say was "Man, dude, you've got issues." In spite of the unsympathetic nature of his words, he didn't appear to mean it as an insult, though an incredulous smile tugged at his lips when he spoke. "What kinda life is worth living if all you're doing is following some asshole's orders? You gotta make your own way -- like, define yourself. If you let someone else do it for you, you're not really you. See what I'm sayin'?"
He looked away from Vin, smile fading somewhat and an unreadable expression upon his face when he continued, his voice uncharacteristically serious, "People will try to tell you who you really are, but that's not something they get to decide." He paused, the smile falling from his lips entirely, and continued in a slightly firmer voice, "... So you make your own legacy." Silent for another few moments, he eventually blinked, losing the serious demeanor in favor of a more nonchalant one when he unfolded his arms and looked back at Vincent, grinning suddenly. "Seriously, dude, it's not rocket science - just tell your dad off and do your own thing. What's he gonna do? Tell you how disappointed he is? The guy can shove it, if you ask me." | commentary |
