Father must have been feeling particular grateful today, because Vin was allowed a day off in spite of not doing anything fantastical, or even out of the ordinary. This would be the first time xe was headed to the Skatepark without a friend or two by xis side, but it was alright. A skateboard was more than enough company. It was one of xis more prized possessions, father had given it to xim when xe was young, it matched xis colors perfectly. The paint splattered on the front and back was the neon green of xis hair, the design a typical Inkling trademark. The rest of it was black, like the jacket xe wore from day to day.
Xe spent a considerable amount of time skateboarding by xis lonesome. It was crowded, but not as much as it usually was, allowing a few vacant spots for Vin to have to ximself. Slowly, however, xe got up the courage to start skating over to the other teenagers. Vin wasn't much of an extrovert, but xe could usually hold ximself in casual conversation, despite some differences between xim and other kids.
Kick flipping onto a rail, Vin successfully ground it to the end, landing smoothly. Xe then pushed off, gaining speed, but then came to a stop at a table. It was quite large, and xe could see strangers crowded at one of the ends, about xis age. Skateboard in hand, xe rested on the opposite side, enough to where they could ignore xim if they wanted, but close enough so that maybe xe could get a feel for what they were talking about and chime in.

Unsurprisingly, school had been as boring and uneventful as it was every other day. Honestly speaking, though, he hadn't even been conscious for most of it, but it was for the best - things were easier to bear that way. About an hour had passed since his last class for the day was dismissed. He'd wasted no time in finding Iggy and leaving school grounds; they had a lot to talk about, anyway, even if most of it centered around the fact that they desperately needed more team members. It wasn't possible to compete with only two people, after all, and for all his confidence, Casper wasn't sure he'd be willing to take that chance even if it was feasible.
Having since settled at the end of a table with Iggy, he'd taken to absent mindedly watching the other inklings in the skatepark, most of them pulling off tricks he only wished he was capable of performing himself. Meanwhile, his companion was going on about something, but he wasn't paying much attention - Iggy's voice was little more than a drone in his ears. Fiddling with his headphone cord, he propped his chin up with one hand, his eyelids drooping slightly as he stared past the other boy. "Uh huh," he mumbled distractedly, feeling more lethargic by the second.
It was a nice day. He could have fallen asleep if he wanted to.
He broke from his daze only when he saw another inkling headed in their relative direction, lifting his head slightly from his palm and blinking. When Vin took a seat at the other side of the table, he glanced xim over and lifted his brow, but beyond that made no effort to engage. It was around that point, after all, that he remembered Iggy was in his presence and, returning his attention to the other boy, he interjected suddenly in spite of being clueless as to what his friend was saying, "Yeah, so anyway - what's the plan?"

A skate park wasn't the most ideal location to discuss team matters, but it beat holing up indoors after suffering through six stuffy hours of prison. Accompanied by a cool breeze and clear sky, the day was pleasantly warm; the atmosphere itself would have been perfect, were it not for the grating of wood against metal and jarring peals of laughter. Given Casper's lethargy during class, however, it seemed a reliable means to keep his companion from falling asleep.
Setting his pen aside for a moment, Iggy deigned to ignore his homework and went on, resuming his previous thought, "I don't know - I guess I haven't replaced the fliers downtown yet." Iggy furrowed his brow, lips pressing into a thin, frustrated line. "We should've had more of a turnout by now. Maybe someone's tearing them d--" Casper's voice, monotonous with disinterest, caused him to fall silent. His expression became dry.
Lifting his eyes, he leaned minutely forward. "The plan is that we drop the team dead weight." Rather than wait for a reply, he placed two fingers against his temple and permitted an exasperated sigh. "How are you still tired? You slept all day." Iggy crossed his arms over the table and cast his companion an impatient glare. A bit of movement in the corner of his eye drew his attention to the inkling now leaning against the table, but he paid the stranger no mind, save a quick glance. "If you're actually willing to pay attention, maybe we can get somewhere for once. Are you capable of that?"

Honing xis ears in, Vincent picked up something about a team and dropping. Hmm. Vin was a rather notorious team hopper, but people didn't mind -- accepted it as normal, since xe was a Carcer. They always joined what team was focused on winning, and winning big. But it wouldn't hurt to scope out the perhaps-upcoming competition, even if the two inklings in front of xim didn't see so hopeful about their team. In fact, one of them seemed more interested in a nap. Thinking, xe first left the table for a bit to get a drink, nothing special, just a soda. If xe was going to be socializing, xe needed something to focus on when talking wasn't happening.
Vin had many nervous and anxious habits, but for the most part they were rather tame and unnoticeable. If xe had a hoodie on, xe'd play with the drawstrings. If xe had a bracelet on, xe'd shake his arm around to see it move when there was nothing interesting going on. That's why xis clothing was always exceptionally simple. A Carcer was not supposed to give off the impression that they were the least bit intimidated by anything. After all, it wouldn't be too long before Vin entered Elite territory.
With cup in hand, xe sipped loudly, and then began walking over to the two inklings xe'd spotted before. Xe approached in a what would usually be seen as a timid way, but something about the look in xis eyes just made it casual, calculating. Skateboard tucked under xis arm, xe didn't sit this time, instead just stood in front of them. "You know, people won't join your team if you laze around like that." Xe raised a single brow. "You're my age, right? Start acting like it. Get out there and make connections. Fliers are useless if nobody knows your name." Despite xis obvious blunt nature, Vincent didn't seem confrontational in the slightest, in fact xe was trying to be helpful. But trying was, unfortunately, the keyword here.

Evidently uncaring of Iggy's annoyance, Cas waved his hand in a dismissive manner. "Yeah, yeah, I get it," he replied, sounding more exasperated than actually offended. "Take a chill pill. It's not my fault you're so boring to listen to. 'Sides..." He leaned back, diverting his gaze with an impatient frown. "Talking about it isn't gonna get us anywhere. We just need to straight up ask people if they wanna get in on the team, right? You're the one with the crazy rep, so... it can't be that hard to find some people who wanna join." He paused for a moment, his frown deepening in thought. "Then again, I guess you're not exactly very... friendly. We gotta work on your social skills - no offense."
Torn from his thoughts by an unfamiliar voice, he lifted his brow and turned to face the inkling from before, his features shifting with a look of inquisitiveness that, at the sound of Vincent's words, quickly warped to one of offense - and then annoyance. He made a face, openly scrutinizing the one before him. "Yeah, and what do you know? Plenty of people know my name -- and I sure don't know yours, so I'd quit acting all high and mighty if I were you, buddy." As a bitter afterthought, he added, crossing his arms, "You and your stupid skateboard."

Rather than considering the possibility that maybe he was being too hard on Casper, he shook his head and looked away, irritation palpable. "My 'crazy rep' isn't exactly working in our favor," he muttered, bitterness tainting the words. "That's the part we're supposed to be leaving out." If his former teammates hadn't been part of the picture, maybe that wouldn't have been a problem. Neglecting to voice the thought, he frowned, agreeing only after a considerable pause, "Obviously remote applications aren't doing the trick."
Rather than argue with his companion's final statement, Iggy permitted an audible sigh and gave Casper a pointed sidelong glance. He lifted his eyes only at the sound of an unfamiliar voice. It didn't take long to register Vin's words as an uninvited intrusion, but any such annoyance with the stranger's commentary was hidden under a mask of indifference. Skepticism willed his eyes to narrow fractionally as they passed over xis face. Here they hadn't exchanged more than a sentence or two, and they'd already been granted the privilege of being told to act their age. He almost smiled.
Any intention he might have had to reply was overtaken by Casper's defensive retort. Ordinarily, he might have found his companion's childish behavior frustrating - given the circumstances, however, he couldn't help but agree. Skepticism plain, Iggy added in a resigned tone, "Thanks for the tip."

Xe was at first, honestly a little surprised at the offense on the male's face. What xe said surely hadn't been that rude, right? Vin was only trying to help, after all. But xe was met with a response that sounded more like witty comebacks thrown together than the start of a conversation. To this, Vin sought to defuse the situation, not wanting to start up anything unintentionally. If xe really wanted to fight, the other would know it. But, then, of course, the boy had to say about not knowing xis name. At that, something primal boiled within xis heart as it always did when xe heard words like that. It was something instilled in xim from the very beginning, it always had been. Though the skateboard remark was unappreciated as well, xe could take that. But xis father wouldn't stand for anyone dissing the Carcer name, and Vincent wouldn't either.
Vin glanced behind xim as the other added something on, to confirm if the direction xe sought to point at soon was the right one. It was. Narrowing xis eyes at the blue-haired boy, a frown began to form on xis face. Xe leaned in. "It's Carcer." Venom dripped in xis voice, and then, unamused, xe pointed back with xis thumb at a billboard towering in the distance. It was the current MVP rankings, right by the team ones, advertising for the teenagers to join the fight, for parents to sign them up. Vincent's name was on the MVP board, sitting comfortably at number one, though later on this week xe'd likely drop down into second place for a bit. Xe was grateful for the good timing in that moment, though xe usually didn't fret over rankings when a meeting with xis father wasn't coming up. "Vincent Carcer."
Tensing, xe gritted xis teeth. "Does that sound unfamiliar to you, buddy? If so, I'm not surprised your team hasn't taken off." After that, Vin took a breath, seemingly calming down. Xe took one or two steps back, xis once intimidating posture unwinding somewhat. "I was attempting to help you out, but with the way you're acting, maybe I'm wasting my time..." Vincent looked Cas over, judging with a frown.

Had it really been only a month?
It felt as though it'd been a year since Mar had infiltrated the Inkopolis border from Octo Valley. Maybe this was attributed to her steady progression of the mission at hand, or simply through her own tendency to lose track of time. It was true that Octolings were all taught to despise their surface-dwelling equivalents, but Mar had always felt something different; compassion, and a desire for peace.
Despite this, the mimic was treated and raised as nothing more than another cog in the Octarian system. Granted no other choice but to carry out her mission; infiltrate the city, blend in, and report back to her superiors on a bi-monthly basis.
However, her gentle nature had allowed her to befriend Inklings on a higher level than previously intended. No one, not even the few 'friends' she had acquired, seemed to suspect her. Perhaps they found her a bit odd, but nothing that struck them as suspicious. Inklings hardly even seemed as ill-intentioned as they were built up to be... if she was honest, it hurt to lie to them.
But she would have to push those feelings away - for now, it was time to relax. The skatepark seemed to be booming much less than, say, the mall at this hour. It was a perfect time to stand back and watch Inklings 'shred' and pull off 'sweet moves', as she learned. Even now it was fascinating to see how they had fun in ways different from what she was used to.
Except... She begun to sense a rather negative vibe nearby. In fact, about five feet away, a group of three Inklings seemed to be getting into a tiff. Mar was never one to interrupt such affairs, but she definitely had a habit of staring with those huge, crux eyes. Not to mention she hated seeing others get hurt - she wouldn't hesitate to step in if something broke out.

If Casper felt any remorse for responding the way he did to Vincent's 'greeting', he certainly didn't show any sign of it. Rather, he was met with a certain smugness at the other inkling's blatant displeasure. It was all he could do to stifle the proud smile he felt forming upon his lips. Any display of amusement, however, diminished rather quickly at the words Vincent spoke next, an intimidating air about them. Skeptical at first, he little more than arched an eyebrow at this so-called 'Carter' - that is, until his gaze followed the direction xe'd pointed in, settling confusedly upon the billboard in the distance there. It took a moment for the realization to hit, and when it did, his expression wiped clean of any dubiety it had previously held.
Well... wasn't that... something.
It was enough to embarrass him; that much was certain. In the brief silence that followed, Casper struggled to make a remark of some kind, but nothing came to mind. Luckily, when Vincent continued, his uncertainty proved to be short-lived. The sound of the inkling's words drew his attention again to Vin's face. Every word was fuel to the fire, and what had originally manifested as humiliation was quickly becoming anger. Bristling, he stood abruptly, his temper flaring, and retorted hotly, uncaring to the fact that Vincent had already begun to calm down, "Oh yeah? And who says we even want your help to begin with? I could take you with both hands tied behind my back -- and I don't need some stupid rank to do it!" Evidently, he didn't seem to care - or more likely notice - that they had an audience.

Half expecting the stranger to take the hint and leave, he was promptly disappointed by the expression of impending anger on the inkling's face. Absently wondering what possibly could have spurred xis offense (after all, insulting a skateboard seemed a far cry from insulting - hadn't they just been called children by the same inkling?), Iggy watched with a critical squint as Vin bit out a sharp reply. Talk about touchy.
Pulling the corner of his mouth to one side, Iggy smothered his exasperation and followed Vin's gesture with an unsuspecting gaze. When his eyes fell upon the board posted not far away, they narrowed fractionally, confusion overtaken by a blink of realization. The initial surprise he felt was traded in favor of condescension, an emotion rising to line his expression with a sardonic smile. Touchy and pompous - what a winning combination. Rather than speak, he followed Vincent's gaze as it raked scrutinizingly over his teammate. A twinge of annoyance willed his smile to lessen.
Iggy resisted the urge to sigh as Casper fell for the bait and stood, posture brimming with aggression. "Cas," he began, sounding tired, "cool it. It's not every day you meet one of the Greats - show some respect." Voice lacking the sarcasm his words implied, he added, this time with a contemplative glance at Vin. "Besides, I'm pretty sure biting and kicking is against Turf War regulations." Unfortunately.

It wasn't as though Vincent expected to get much of a good response out of them. Seeing as xe'd already provoked them, mentioned that xe was in fact ranked high above them would only make their irritation grow. So xe didn't feel particularly hurt as the blue boy threw some insulting words xis way. Vin sighed, rolling his eyes, but taking another step back. To be honest, xe wanted to get out of here. Today wouldn't end in anything good, which, while the other's words didn't, kind of stung at xim in the sense that xe knew that meant it was xim that had failed. Father was always proud of xim when xe hit the top ranks, so why was it that everyone around xim, perhaps the real people xe wanted to recognize xim, seemed annoyed by it, never impressed?
"I don't get it. If you don't care about rank, why do you want to build a team...? Isn't that what you do it for?" Vin sounded reserved now, genuinely curious. "I guess it doesn't matter." Frowning, the Carcer glanced away, at the concrete below for a slow moment. Xe wasn't sure if xe would have the energy to try again tomorrow with another pair of strangers, especially since Father would be working xim to the bone after today. Xe rubbed at the arm that was carrying xis skateboard, feeling rather defeated, though xis expression was neutral, not letting anything on.
Why did it even matter? Xe already had a team. Sure, they didn't necessarily talk outside of tactics and battle strategy, but that needed to happen. If xe was gonna make it in the big leagues, friendships between teammates would get in the way. When drama inevitably started up, as it always did, it would complicate and hurt the games they participated in. No thanks. "Alright, I'll leave you to it. Just don't say I didn't warn you."

Relieved to see that a fight hadn't broken out, Mar still kept an ear on the conversation. She understood now; it seemed two of these Inklings were having trouble forming a team.
She learned fairly quickly that this was a common problem, particularly for newcomers, and those who were especially picky. Finding teammates who could support you properly didn't always come easy, and sometimes there were difficulties anyways. Heck, even the boys Mar had acquainted were having trouble landing permanent affiliates. She herself chose to only work with them on occasion, and that was due specifically to her tendency to disappear time and again.
Still, she knew how frustrating it probably was for these two. Seeing Vincent simply walking away from the problem sparked an instinct in her; something that came quite commonly, and presented nothing but problems each time it did. This was, of course, her desire to help others fighting desperately against her own introversion.
Mar had always been severely shy, and avoided social interactions whenever possible. But at times like these, she learned that doing so would lead to regret and self-deprecation. She would have no choice but to step in, lest she be scolding herself for it later. With a deep breath, the mimic took a few confident steps towards the group until she stood somewhat-between the arguing parties.
...At which point, she took a couple of awkward steps back.
"Um," she started, immediately making an effort to raise her voice, "I'm sorry, I-I couldn't help but overhear... You're building a team...?" Mar shifted her gaze from the ground in attempt to make eye contact, but only for a brief moment. It didn't take long before pink started to flood her cheeks from discomfort, and those hands started fidgeting with themselves.
"I'm-- what I mean to say is, I wouldn't mind helping! I believe anyone can form a good team if they just-- don't give up..." She realized these attempts at encouragement were... feeble, to say the least. But at least she could say she tried.

Iggy's cautioning fell on deaf ears. Perhaps, had Casper been less heated, he would have been able to appreciate the carefully-placed sarcasm in his companion's warning. Feeling defiant, however, he merely gave Iggy an incredulous look and prompted, "Seriously? You're just gonna take that? Come on! Let's take that stupid skateboard and stuff it up--" Cutting off abruptly at the sound of Vincent's voice, he drew his attention again to the other inkling's face, his bitterness increasing tenfold when he saw the resigned look resting there. Cas scoffed. "If rank actually meant anything, you wouldn't be at number one," he retorted, eyes narrowed scrutinizingly. "But, hey, I'll let you know when we need advice on how to..." His voice trailed off for a moment and he hesitated, his features shifting with a look of uncertainty before he finished, gaze darting briefly to the side, "You know - when we need advice on how to be huge assholes." He inwardly cursed himself. Real smooth.
While he'd fully intended to continue (hopefully to recover from that embarrassing blunder), he had time only to part his lips when someone stepped in front of him - and then promptly stepped back. His temper waned and, blinking, he looked at Mar, caught off guard by her approach and even more so by her greeting, cautious though it was.
Immediately, his expression smoothed over, taken by curiosity, and he lifted his brow. Perhaps it would have been easier to be upset with her for interrupting him if she hadn't seemed so... harmless. Intrigued, he took note of the way she diverted her gaze every so often, wringing her hands together, and - was she blushing? Cas felt a smile making its way to his lips in spite of himself, however faint it might have been. Admittedly, it took him a few seconds to actually register what she was saying, and the realization caught up with him soon after. She was offering to help them? His smile broadened, expression lighting up, and he cast Vin a pointed, almost smug, look. "At least some people know skill when they see it." Never mind that she was offering to help them and not the other way around.
Grinning now, he placed his hand upon the tabletop and leaned slightly towards Mar, his earlier confidence returning with a vengeance. "Nice of you to offer! We're already pretty high in demand, y'know, but I'm not one to turn down a helping hand. You can never learn too much, right? From people who actually know what they're talking about, I mean."

Granted momentary relief from his irritation when Casper blurted out his impatient reply, he managed an incredulous smile and cast it with a shrug back at his companion. "Take what?" His voice was smug, deceiving the genuine nature of his expression. "It was just a bit of friendly advice." As much as it pleased him to make light of Casper's offense, it soon occurred to him that he had enough provocation standing in front of him. Shaking his head, Iggy abandoned his guise and added, this time with a hint of exasperation, "Seriously, Cas, take it easy; you're wasting your breath."
The amusement his features held gave way to a poorly-contained grimace the moment Vin spoke. Thankfully, Casper was quick on the upkeep, butting in with a retort just seconds later. For a moment, he was impressed with his teammate's wit; it didn't last. A small frown was sent Casper's way, accompanied this time by a subtle shake of his head.
Becoming increasingly irked by Vin's presence, he kept any such traces of annoyance deftly tucked away, little more than tightening his brow. The stranger's egotistical behavior resounded with a familiarity all too unwelcome - skill wasn't compensation enough for the irritation xe'd caused in the course of two minutes. Despite his bitter thoughts, Iggy decided against engaging any further. If they ignored Vin long enough, maybe they'd be given some peace; provided Cas left xim alone for more than 10 seconds.
When Vin's parting words did arrive, they fell on deaf ears. Attention diverted at the sound of a new voice - one notably kinder, for that matter - he paid the former inkling no mind, eyes trained in faint surprise on Mar. Somewhat baffled by her timid behavior, Iggy blinked, taken aback by the words she spoke next. Helping?
Torn between optimism and bewilderment, he parted his lips, intent on replying - Casper's confident remark willed his breath to fall short. He frowned, exchanging a pointed look with the inkling, before interjecting carefully, "Actually, he -- no, we're really not."

Intriguingly, and unfortunately for the stranger, the blue boy's words actually brightened Vin's current somber mood a little in amusement. At the remark of 'stuffing that skateboard' up somewhere, xe merely raised a brow, a small smirk twitching on xis lips, fading afterwards. Did he really think he could do anything to Vincent and get away with it? He was quite the rowdy one, wasn't he. Eh, Vin could appreciate spark, xe supposed. Just not when it was so...easily misdirected. It wasn't useful like that. It needed to have purpose, which Casper obviously didn't have, if the sorry state his team was in was anything for Vin to go by. With the following comment on the ranks, Vincent didn't have much of a problem with. It wasn't xim who decided on them, after all. For all xe knew, Casper could be right. But as long as it pleased Father, Vin didn't much give a damn.
"Uh huh. Meet me on the field, and we'll see if the rankings mean anything, amateur." Xe said, plainly as Cas blundered shortly afterwards, the smirk now noticeable on xis face. If it weren't for the skateboard, xe might have gone so far as to fold xis arms with a smug air.
Surprised when another intervened into their conversation, Vin looked to her. At her words, xe felt sorry for her. "I wouldn't waste your time, I've already tried to get through to them..." Vincent offered simply with a shrug, sounding more exasperated than annoyed, however. Xe intended to say more, before Cas cut in again, with his ever loud tone. While there was amusement in Cas believing he actually had skill, Vin found ximself slightly insulted by the implication that xe didn't know anything about Turf War that could be useful to their budding team. Come on. Xe knew the boy was just bitter, but there couldn't be a better teacher.
"There's no need to be so stubborn, you know. I wasn't even trying to make you mad before, you took it that way all on your own. I was just stating the obvious -- it's not my fault if you think the truth hurts." Unable to hold back a semi-confident grin, xis teeth peered through. "Besides, I don't think she was exactly offering to join up officially..." Vincent nodded at Mar, though there was a small questioning look in xis eyes, then glanced back to Casper. "She was offering to give you some advice on finding other teammates. You know, like, stupid ones? People you'd feel right at home with."

Now that xis family was out of the question, xe was barely offended by the words. Vin was actually sort of enjoying ximself in a conversation for once. What a miracle. It sure had been a while.
