[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It'd been a long while since she'd had a good challenge. Darting quickly through the ink she'd left behind to dodge the intruder's attacks, she shifted into her humanoid form again just as the Agent headed straight for her, going in for close combat since their ranged battle had been at a heavy stalemate. The man went straight to stun her with a hit to her head with his weapon, but Artemis caught it with her hand, struggling against him - and winning. As her legs straightened up, she gazed with her single seeing eye, seeing the intimidation in the Agent's eyes. The fear.
This, this was usually the time, she thought to herself. Where she'd have to be more alert, for when fear settled in, that was when opponents threw away all their morals in favor of simply surviving. It was a sad but beaten to death truth - how 'war could change people'. Everyone with common sense knew that. She lifted her leg, and kicked the Inkling away, keenly watching as he slid among the ink, heaving as the wind was knocked out of him. Artemis did not advance. She simply took a defensive posture, waiting for his next move. She suspected it wouldn't be as standard as the tactics beforehand...
But he surprised her. He laid down his weapon, and gave her a hard look that she rarely saw on any Inklings, let alone Agent's. "I know you're better than me. You're just an average solider, that's what your color would tell me...but..." This could be a trick. Something to loosen her up. She tensed more. "If I go on any longer, you will kill me. I know that. So...I surrender. Do what you will." The Agent hung his head, closing his eyes in acceptance.
Artemis was shocked, but pleasantly so. To see such gestures from a race that was not her own was...well, almost amazing. Blinking, the huntress began to ever so slowly drop her battle stance. "...Go, then. As long as you never return." As always, her words were short and to the point, blunt - but they were not merciless. They never were. The Inkling lifted his head, clearly surprised, but then nodded. He moved to stand. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It had been another long day, but it wasn't over yet - Crow figured he'd return to the surface again later that night, but in the meantime, he'd need to stop by his apartment and clean up. One could only stay on their feet for so long before they required some amount of rest, though he tended to push the limit quite a bit. Unfortunately, his body was aching too much for him to continue ignoring it.
A sigh slipped from his lips as he made his way down the street, paying little mind to his surroundings. Not much tended to happen out in the open where he lived, anyway, set aside the occasional fight. He slipped his phone into his pocket, his tired gaze lifting at the sight of something in the corner of his eye. Turning his face, he stared down a nearby alleyway, empty apart from some discarded junk and... an Inkling?
He'd arrived in time to witness the very end of the fight taking place between an agent and a fellow soldier. At the sight of them, he tensed, immediately alert. It appeared that the girl had bested the one before her when, suddenly, the Inkling began to stand. Eyes widening, he reached automatically for the handgun at his belt and outstretched his arm, positioning it in a swift, practiced manner before him. All it took was an instant for him to fire the weapon - just as he'd intended, the agent fell limply before Artemis before he could move another muscle.
Exhaling deeply upon having made the shot, he hesitated for only a moment before returning his gun to its original place and allowing himself to relax somewhat. Eventually, he returned his attention to the soldier several yards away from him - from this distance, there wasn't much to see. "Need some help?" Crow finally said, his voice raised and housing a vaguely humorous air. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]When a shot rang out not a second later, it made Artemis's heart stop. She'd seen death before, lived in a specific bubble of this world where it happened all the time. But ever since she'd become a solider, there hadn't been many moments where someone's death didn't depend on her actions. When a comrade was wounded, she could haul them over her shoulder and bring them to safety, and when an enemy pleaded for forgiveness -
Well.
Clearly not everyone had the same ideals. A dark burning instilled itself in her chest as she looked upon the Agent. At least it had ended quickly for him, his eyes almost peaceful - still in relief from when she had taken pity on him. It made her stomach churn with a sickness, which turned into a mighty acid as the voice of the attacker rang out. She slowly looked up, her eye falling upon just who had caused this to happen.
That arrogance, she knew it very well. She'd seen it on so many of his color, those dark tentacles with the figure of seaweed sprouting near. Artemis usually kept to herself with these opinions, but not when they thought it was their right to get into what was her business, her territory. She would take orders, carry them out one way or another, but she would not be treated like a helpless pet that needed to be constantly trained.
A heavy, tense silence hung in the air after Crow's words. Then, Artemis moved. Carefully. Her hands clenched into fists by her sides, her boots clashing against the inked pavement. She didn't increase her pace, even as her heart started to beat faster with wrath as she came upon the male, towering over him. The only sounds she gave away were the filtered breaths through her mask.
"You."
Her fingers itched, and she grabbed him by his shirt then, not roughly - not pulling him in. She did not want to harm her own kind. But he needed to pay attention. "Did that Inkling look in any way a threat to me or you, from where you were standing? Could you - one of the elite - not see the way his shoulders were sagged? How loose his grip was?"

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It didn't take Crow very long to realize that something was amiss. The way the soldier said nothing as she began to approach him, her pace swift and determined - and, when she grew close enough for him to see her face (at least, most of her face), he knew for certain that her intention was not to come closer so as to thank him. The intensity in her mismatched gaze was more than enough to clue him into that.
By the time she was merely feet away from him, his calm demeanor faded away, some bafflement upon his face when he parted his lips so as to question her. Before Crow could speak, however, she took sudden hold of his shirt, and within seconds his confusion was overshadowed with a look of shock - whether at her appearance or what she'd just done, one couldn't be certain.
In immediate retaliation, he tensed, grabbing at her wrist with one hand so as to try and pry her fingers from his shirt. Again, the soldier spoke before he could get a single question out, and her words caught him all the more off guard. Torn between defensiveness and bewilderment, he stared at her in disbelief, nearly too taken aback to gawk at her height or the striking scar upon her face. Well, this certainly hadn't been how he'd anticipated things would play out.
"Let go of me," he spat vehemently, glowering up at her. "Are you out of your mind? What does it matter what he was doing? It was an agent -- forgive me for doing you a favor. You'd be the dead one if I hadn't stepped in and done something." For a moment, he fell silent, then added pointedly, "Though perhaps I should have left you two alone." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Her grip only tightened against his hands on her wrist, gaze not faltering. His words, defensive and enraged did little to quell her skepticism of the fellow Octoling. "So, this is what they are allowing into the 'elite' now." She said first, her voice a little distant, as if she was somewhere else before refocusing back on Crow.
"You are talking about things that you do not understand. He had surrendered to me, and was a weaker opponent. To kill someone like that - without giving them a chance to defend themselves....how dishonorable. You are falling into the trap that the enemy often leads one to." Though late, she did take heed to his request, letting him go. Artemis thought he might run, as the dishonorable often do.
"And to not make contact with your comrade first? What were you thinking. He could've been giving me useful information." The woman cared not for his snide remark of leaving them alone, it only further proved what she already thought of him. And she preferred to be alone, either way. "Your actions were careless and unnecessary. I suggest you do not have such a trigger happy finger in the future."

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Increasingly irritated, Crow bristled at the sound of her words, his eyes widening with a look of disbelieving anger. He parted his lips so as to voice his defense, but she continued before he had a chance to speak, much to his displeasure. She was just full of wisdom, wasn't she? Crow gritted his teeth.
It required every ounce of his willpower to refrain from interrupting her, but he supposed it was for the best - after all, she was at least a head taller than him. Not that he as intimidated, of course, even if nearly everything about her was, well... intimidating. It was difficult not to notice, particularly given how close she was to him. Thankfully, he seemed too preoccupied with his anger to care.
When finally she released him, he exhaled harshly and stepped back, letting go of her wrist as he did so. Reproachfully, Crow stared at her, his eyes narrowing to slits. Whether there was some truth to her words or not, he could have cared less - no way was he about to admit that he hadn't known the Inkling had surrendered, though truthfully speaking he doubted it would have made a difference.
"I 'understand' the situation perfectly well," he snapped, looking her up and down, "Save your breath - I don't need to be lectured. A simple 'thank you' would have sufficed." Crow scoffed. "He got what he deserved. There is no honor among intruders, let alone Inklings. All that sentiment of yours will do is get you killed." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The woman's wrath had long since faded to a dull ache, in it's wake a curiosity she couldn't help about the male Octoling. This wasn't new to her, not by a long shot, but it was different when she looked about his age, if not a few years younger. Sometimes, that meant they still had room to change. Artemis herself had already outgrown her 'changing' stage, stubborn and bull-headed to a fault.
Well, it would be a fault if she wasn't in the right. "I will not thank you when you killed for no reason at all. Don't think I cannot see that look in your eyes." She paused, narrowing her eyes at him and leaning in so that he could see his expression clearly even in the darkness. "You killed because you like to. Not because you had to. Do you think I have not felt the rage you have felt? The urge to wipe their species from this land, when they have made us suffer so?"
The scar across her eye - surely it would speak for her, if he wasn't as much as a fool as she thought. Though perhaps she should not be giving the man the benefit of the doubt. "Hear me. You will not get anywhere in this life if you rank your confidence by the amount of blood on your hands." Artemis felt that was enough, and took a step back, putting distance between the two of them. She nodded, signaling she was done with this petty argument, and brushed past him.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Crow knew the second he finished speaking that he wouldn't get the last word - it was plain just by the look on her face that she wasn't finished. When she finally responded, that same calculating look in her eyes, his anger waned in place of bewilderment, but it only lasted for a moment before he managed to smother it, his defensiveness returning with a vengeance.
Even in its midst, however, he couldn't deny how obvious it was she spoke from experience. If the blindness in her eye and the scar upon her face meant anything at all, it was precisely that - though perhaps more powerful than either of those things was just the manner in which she spoke. Regardless, he'd no intentions of remaining silent.
When she stepped past him, the defiance which had manifested within his chest finally revealed itself and he turned, catching her shoulder in a firm grip. "I killed him because I thought he was going to attack you," he hissed, "And if you sincerely believe he wouldn't have killed you when faced with the opportunity, no matter how honorable you were being, you're the one who doesn't know what you're talking about." His lip curled, fingers tightening. "Don't you dare pretend to understand my motivation." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]She stopped in her tracks at the hand on her shoulder, listening to him as he went on, the expression on her face blank. When it seemed he was done, his hissed breaths calming the slightest bit, she turned her head to look directly at him. Her body soon followed, and she lifted up a cold hand to grab at the one on her shoulder, attempting to remove it without having to wrench it off violently. "I know how to tell when someone is going to kill me. I would have never let my guard down if I wasn't absolutely sure." Artemis explained to him.
"I consider it an insult that you would think differently of me, a fellow soldier. But I will let it slide." She never considered herself a generous person, so he would only get two strikes, not three. "I did not say anything about knowing your motivation. I know we are but strangers." With a sigh, she raised a single brow, her next words clearly insincere because she lacked tact, but she wanted to try anyway, to rid herself of what was becoming a time wasting event.
"Thank you for trying to do what you thought was helping. I suppose it is better that you direct your strange...feelings, to our cause, rather than to backstabbing." The thought of having the elite Octoling as a comrade made her wary, but she said nothing of it. He seemed difficult, uncooperative. But so were all the others of his rank. Artemis had to admit he was at least somewhat better, with the fact that he had the intelligence to defend himself with words, not violence. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It didn't take long for his anger to fade into exasperation, and when she reached to pry his hand from her shoulder, he offered no resistance, releasing her a moment later. He tried to ignore how unsettling her gaze was, particularly when it was trained upon him with such an unfeeling air. Whatever she'd been through, he didn't think he wanted to know. So long as she stopped jumping to conclusions and stuffing her ignorant beliefs down his throat, he'd be content with the extent of their interaction.
Crow was becoming quickly aware of the fact that she'd as little intention of budging as he did. As irritating as it was, he didn't care to bother trying to convince her to see things his way. At her words, he little more than scoffed, eventually turning his gaze away. "You didn't say anything about it," he retorted, the words pointed and seeping with displeasure. "Whatever -- I get the point; I won't get involved next time. Save your gratitude."
Returning his attention to her face, he gave an insincere smile and continued in a voice dripping sarcasm, "Well, color me thrilled you're not dead, but I had more important things to take care of before you felt the need to scold me for saving your ass - so, if you don't mind, I think I'll be leaving now." With that, he stepped past her and started down the street once more, the poorly-feigned friendliness immediately draining from his expression. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Confused by his words, she for once didn't have much of a response. She was content with leaving it there, before he perked up again with another insult to her capabilities. She gritted her teeth behind her mask. She was the one that needed saving? Before he could get too far, her arm outstretched and caught him by the back of his shirt, straining only slightly as she lifted him off the ground. With only a moment's hesitation, she threw him on the concrete, splattered with the remains of the battle before. Her movements neared mechanical. She was used to this.
"Fight me." Artemis told him, words abrupt. "If you think you are powerful enough to 'save' me, surely you are powerful enough to defeat me as well." She didn't step forward to take advantage of the fact that he was now on the floor, but instead backwards, letting him prepare however he wanted for his next move. With a blink, she gave him a skeptical look. "Unless, you are more scared of your own comrade than killing in cold-blood." The provoke was so predictable, and yet, Artemis found it worked on his type more often than not. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]He'd expected that would be the end of things - naturally, though, he was wrong.
When suddenly Artemis took hold of the back of his shirt and, of all things, lifted him off of his feet, his heart nearly stopped in his chest, a startled noise slipping from his throat before he could properly stifle it. Merely an instant later, however, she released him, though he was aware of little more than the furious spinning of his surroundings and, less than a second later, the cold road against his side when he fell.
His body responded immediately, a deep ache resonating from where he'd collided with the ground, but worst of all was the way his head pounded, reeling from the fall. Features twisting with strain, he struggled to open his eyes, stirring merely a few seconds after having hit the ground, and grit his teeth, her challenging words more than enough to effectively rouse him from his dazed state.
"What the hell is your problem?!" he snapped, lifting his torso from the ground and rubbing his forehead with one hand. "You want me to fight you? Are you out of your goddamn mind?" Fighting the ache in his already tired muscles, he managed to pull himself to his feet, his breathing short, and winced, glaring at her in a mixture of disbelief and anger. If he hadn't thought she was serious before, he did now, but the slightest uncertainty presented itself in his chest. Still, he bit out between clipped breaths, "I'm not afraid of you -- I'm just not a complete moron, unlike you." The words were harsh. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It was even more peculiar - how her actions caused outcry from the male Octoling. She tilted her head to the side in curiosity, letting him pick himself off the ground, her faded green eye following. "Hmm." She started, seemingly not caring for his next insult, even if that was the reason she had started the scuffle in the first place. "You think you are above consequences." It was a statement, not a question. For that could be the only answer.
He would willingly speak his mind, throwing curses left and right, but seemed surprised whenever someone had the gall to do the same to him. Had he been sheltered? No, that couldn't be it. Soldiers rarely were. Perhaps he was simply a loner - had lost the ones he loved. Considering his hatred for Inklings, she wouldn't put the possibility past him.
She felt a pang of pity for him, if it were the case, but pushed it away. Artemis folded her arms, fixing him with a piercing look, as if trying to see into his thoughts. "You think proving one's skill in the face of mockery is moronic. Why? Explain." As she watched his face carefully, she let a red brow raise once again. She was however, genuinely interested in the answer he would give. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Seething, he stared expectantly in her direction, hoping she'd be able to give him a reasonable explanation for her actions - apart from just challenging him again. When her features ceased to shift even slightly, however, that same cold calculation upon her face, he knew it was foolish of him to expect anything of the sort from her. He furrowed his brow, clenching his teeth. What was her problem, anyway?
Her words made him tense all the more, his gaze burning with vehemence. "No," Crow spat in a voice thick with fury. "I don't. I think you're moronic." Smothering whatever curiosity he felt regarding her peculiar disposition, he felt his anger begin to spread, flooding his veins with adrenaline, and he let it. His body was already nearing its limit, what with how long he'd been on his feet, but he didn't care. He refused to let some arrogant stranger get the better of him, a fellow soldier or not, and he'd absolutely no intentions of being scared out of a fight. He clenched his fists.
"If it's a fight you want, then fine."
Forcibly smothering the doubt he felt manifesting within his chest, he stared her down for a few moments, trying to determine how best to approach her. He knew she'd see him coming, no matter what he decided to do -- so perhaps the best way to begin was with force (as much as he could manage in his state, that is). Lifting either of his fists, he took a fighting stance and narrowed his eyes, his senses alert.
Then, after what felt like an eternity, he lunged swiftly forward, attempting to deliver a forceful punch to her gut. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Her expectations of the male, which had never been very high to begin with, fell even shorter at his response. The Octoling didn't want to see reason. That was fine with Artemis, she could deal with never finding out what was behind that ridiculous facade of his. But, then he surprised her somewhat, by taking up her offer and changing into a stance more fitting of a spar. Breathing in, she tucked a stray bit of tentacle hair behind her ear (her braid was growing loose), narrowing her eyes in anticipation.
He wasn't a total idiot, and perhaps if she was her younger self, she would've been impressed by his speed. But with her keen eye and experience, she caught the outstretched arm heading for her stomach, and twisted it back painfully (but not enough to cause serious damage - this was nothing but a spar, after all), so that his body would go to the side to accommodate. Boot raised, she kicked him in the back as she let go, and if all went as planned, it sent him to the ground once more. Only this time, Artemis did not back away. She had her boot come down hard on spot between his shoulders, pressing her weight down on him.
She leaned down towards his ear, voice almost a whisper to prove her point all the more. He would know not to mess with the huntress. "Do you feel that, Elite?" She put more pressure on his shoulders. "I have endured thrice the pain and humiliation you are feeling right now. I will never need 'saving' from the likes of you. That, is why I told you to fight me. Because I can see you like to learn with first hand experience." | commentary |
