[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]In spite of some minuscule part of him having known precisely how things would end, the surprise he felt was by no means dulled when she took sudden hold of his arm, even with the distant knowledge that he'd made a mistake in accepting her challenge. Unfortunately, Crow wasn't given much time to mull over the error in his decision. Immediately following, she twisted his arm back, and in response, pain lanced up to his shoulder and a thin gasp wrung itself from his lungs in some combination of strain and shock.
It was then that he realized precisely how terrible of a mistake he'd made.
When her foot met his back, he collapsed without resistance against the ground once more, this time with arguably more force than he had before. Before he could so much as inhale, Artemis planted the very same foot between his shoulder blades, effectively pressing whatever air might have been in his lungs from his lips. It was difficult to locate the precise source of his pain now - it seemed to be coming from every inch of his body - but the most prominent origin presented itself around where she'd taken to pushing upon his back, the force enough to render him both breathless and immobile.
Trembling from the effort, he struggled to free himself, pressing one hand against the road in an attempt to push against the force she was applying, but it was feeble in comparison. He grit his teeth, torn between frustration and humiliation, and gasped again, the breath sawing in and out of his lungs. Knitting his brow, he shut his eyes, fighting still, but it seemed useless. A moment later, the pressure merely increased, and with it, her voice sounded in his ear, little more than furthering his chagrin.
In the midst of it all, however, he couldn't help but be made curious of what, exactly, she was referring to.
Against his better judgement, he eventually managed between clipped breaths, his voice teeming with fury, strained though it was, "Fuck you -- I'll show you humiliation, you arrogant piece of--" Cutting off suddenly, he inhaled sharply and hissed, "Get off!" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It was almost sad, seeing how he struggled. She felt that pity resurface again, this time, strong enough to make her eyebrows knit together, her gaze softening the tiniest bit as he tried to push against her weight. She let out a deep exhale through her mask, and would've taken to looking up at the sky in exasperation had she not needed to keep an eye on his movements just in case.
At first, she wanted badly to go against his demand, make it even more difficult for him to get good solid breaths of air in. But she could see the exhaustion in his limbs. She would not cause any more pain than necessary. She lifted her foot, folding her arms as she stood by his form. "Get up." In spite of his rank, the words were cold and ruthless - an order for the pitiful sight below her. With how he was acting, she wouldn't be surprised if he stayed on the ground just to rebel against her. And apparently she was the arrogant one.
The thought almost made her smirk behind her mask, but she controlled the reaction. "And look at me." It was an off-hand addition, and she wouldn't do anything until she was sure he wouldn't try and attack her in his rage, which seemed a likely possibility at the moment. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]When finally he was granted relief from the pressure upon his back, he drew a ragged breath and coughed, his lungs aching from lack of oxygen and his ribs sore from being pushed against the hard ground. For a moment, Crow was too glad to have been free to care for the anger he felt - and then the soldier spoke again, her tone authoritative and demanding. Immediately his defiance came rushing back, features twisting with displeasure, and he narrowed his eyes to slits.
For a couple of seconds, he genuinely did consider remaining where he was, if only to spite her.
Eventually, however, he decided against it. He'd endured enough humiliation for one day, though of course he'd no intentions of admitting that she had successfully humbled him, if only for the moment. Grinding his teeth, he rolled his eyes and pushed himself up from the ground, though his aching muscles cried out in protest of the motion.
As desperately as he might have wanted to, he didn't consider attacking her again, and not because he feared another loss; it wouldn't count for anything if he attacked her when she wasn't expecting it. He comforted himself with the thought that he'd have another chance to win against her at a later time - not to mention that he'd been lucky enough to not have an audience there to witness his pathetic attempt.
Cursing under his breath, he pulled himself to his feet, his head ducked and gaze turned away in spite of her demand - whether out of embarrassment, defiance, or a mix of both, one couldn't be certain. His brow furrowed, lips pressing to a thin line. Crow wanted to defend himself, but he couldn't seem to find the words. Even an insult would have felt empty. Perhaps it would have been best to just leave, but he doubted that would end well. The Octoling had already proven how unpredictable she could be.
So, rather than speak, he remained precisely where he was, his face turned away, and waited in silent expectation for her to say whatever it was she wanted to. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]She watched as he stood, waiting a beat longer to see if he would gaze at her. But of course, he disappointed on that front as well. With a sigh, Artemis went about undoing her braid and bringing a hand through the freed hair to bring it her front. Then, she reached back to release the clip keeping her mask in place. An amount of shame ran through her heart, it had been a long time since she had revealed herself like this, especially to someone she did not even like. But it would help the lesson be all that more memorable for him.
Resisting the urge to run her fingers along the long scars that covered each part of cheeks - from slow, painful gashes years ago. Reaching out, Artemis grabbed him by the chin, making him face her and see her in an unaltered state. Her voice came out clearer now that there was nothing in the way, filtering it through. "An inkling did all of this to me, over several days of my capture. The militia still thinks I'm dead." Quieting, she released him, pulling away almost as if it was slowly burning her to touch his skin.
"What I feel for our enemy is not sentiment." Looking down, Artemis grew fierce in expression by the time she gazed back up. "It is a determination to be stronger than them, in every way. Not just in physical prowess, but in heart, mind, and soul." Pausing as she let her words sink in, maybe now he would see the reason behind her past words, though she doubted it. That was why she gave him the short, clipped version, as to not appear vulnerable. "I want them to know they can never tie me down again. Do you understand now?" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Entirely unaware of her intentions, Crow ceased to move from his spot, his attention fixed stubbornly elsewhere. That is, until she took hold of his chin and turned his head to face her, the gesture so sudden he scarcely had time to protest or pull away.
His lips had parted to do just that, however, when he glimpsed her face, this time without the mask she'd worn a few moments ago. In spite of himself, he felt his anger die down, shock taking its place instead, and found he could do little more than stare, dismay showing plainly in his gaze. It was difficult to know what he should focus on first; he'd expected that the blindness and scarring of one of her eyes would be the worst of it, but the rest of her face appeared to have suffered terribly, as well.
Beneath the scarring, Crow could have almost made out someone who didn't look very different from him at all. It had been easy to dismiss her as being some nameless soldier when she wore the mask, particularly with her cold disposition, but now, speaking to him, she seemed almost vulnerable. Even with the past injuries strewn about her skin, however, there was something about her face he felt nearly disgusted with himself for recognizing; namely, beauty.
He didn't realize he'd been staring until she spoke, and the words, though spoken in a calm and collected manner, resonated harshly within him, almost as though he'd been stricken. Swallowing thickly, Crow allowed her to speak, for once feeling no need to interrupt, and tried in vain to ignore the guilt he felt stirring in his chest in response. When she let go of his chin, it was all he could do not to look away again, but he managed to keep his gaze upon her face.
This time, he didn't immediately reply in an effort to fight her words. Crow couldn't deny he'd been granted understanding - about why she'd been acting the way she was, and why she'd said the things she did. In spite of it, however, he neglected to outright accept her words. After what felt like an eternity, he managed to regather his composure, and again he appeared almost reproachful, though he bit back the worst of what he wanted to say for her sake.
Eventually, he merely nodded, his brow furrowing and expression still rather guarded. Another silence followed, and then he spoke. "I think... I can begin to understand it, yes." His voice was cautious, perhaps even housing a pointed air. "You have your reasons for believing what you do, and I have mine." He decided against admitting that her experience had added validated to his hatred of Inklings; after all, what she was saying now, he'd no quarrels with. Then, finally, Crow continued in a measured voice, still somewhat strained, "Let's not make it any more complicated than it needs to be." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Artemis seemed to soften slightly, grateful that he'd put past his pride to take heed of what she was telling him. She paused, thinking if she should say anything about it. It wasn't like he'd turned over a new leaf, and she didn't like to reward people for doing what should come natural to them. But with the current circumstances, especially his physical exhaustion from their spar, even she thought it was a task worth noticing to be humble in the place of her rather ruthless victory.
The woman nodded, and her response was private. "Thank you." Seeing that as the end of it, she went to put her mask back on for the journey home. But the female Octoling stopped in the middle of it. Her gaze looked to him, and this time they held a sympathy, and perhaps a bit of respect. At the very least, tolerance. "Artemis." The soldier told her comrade. "That is my name."
Her red lips twitched into a smirk, her next words might have seemed serious by her unchanging tone, if not for the twinkle of amusement in her eyes. "I am sure you will remember it fondly." With that, she clicked her mask back into place, and turned, beginning to walk away. Her steps were broad and slow, the same as it had been when she had approached him before. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Though still baffled by her abrupt change in demeanor, Crow didn't bother questioning it. He doubted he'd be capable of understanding the motive behind her actions if he tried. His aching muscles insisted it wasn't important enough to bother investigating; rest was all that appealed to him now, and for once he'd no intentions of resisting its call for the sake of going back to the Surface to continue his search again.
Likewise, he'd no idea why she bothered to thank him, and he didn't care to find out. They'd likely never see one another again, after all. When she introduced herself, however, he blinked, looking somewhat surprised. Artemis? It felt odd to connect a name to the face. Perhaps a part of him had been expecting something more along the lines of 'Hellspawn'.
Unsure of what to say, it wasn't until she mentioned with an air of amusement that he'd likely remember her in a fond manner that he felt the urge to scoff. Crow little more than nodded at her, the gesture rather awkward, and watched her depart for a few moments. Fat chance he'd remember her fondly.
Relieved to be done, his lungs permitted a sigh and he rubbed his arm, soreness resonating from the limb. Without turning to look back, he set back on his way home, his posture significantly more slack than it had been before they'd encountered one another. Sleeping was going to feel amazing.
