[attr="class","landfill-link"] half of me's all about apathy & the other half just doesn't care [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Making a point to ignore the group's jeering, Iggy turned to speak to Casper when he realized that the Inkling had stopped moving entirely. Frustration plain, he stared back at Casper with clear intent, parting his lips to scold him.
... Until he decided it was a good idea to insult them. Disbelief overtook Iggy's features, and in the moments it took him to manage a response, the leader of the group had already pushed his sleeves up to his elbows and started towards the blue Inkling with an enraged scowl.
"I don't think you understand the situation you're in," the piranha growled, fingers extending before tightening into a fist. "Allow me to make it clear." Red eyes fixed on his target, he bared his teeth and began rapidly closing the distance between himself and Casper. His companions followed suit, flanking him closely along either side.
Taking hold of his sleeve, Iggy tugged Casper back and hissed under his breath, "When I said 'let's go', I didn't mean let's piss them off." As the trio came close, he extended his arm in front of Casper and took a few steps back. "We're armed - leave us alone and no one will get hurt." Quietly praying that Casper wouldn't mention the nature of his concealed weapon, Iggy remained precisely where he was, watching apprehensively as the piranhas closed the distance separating them.

[attr="class","cas-link"] i'm a bad kid, i'm disastrous i don't know wrong from right [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]He knew the precise second the piranha's gaze locked upon him with an outraged gleam that he should have kept his mouth shut. His bold front fell away within seconds, anxiety building up in its place, and he took an instinctive step back when they began to approach, whatever effort he'd put forth to appear brave utterly thwarted. His gaze darted between the three of them, breath shortening, and he gasped when Iggy pulled him back, hissing into his ear.
Swallowing thickly, he hesitated only when Iggy proceeded to step in front of him, shielding him from the others with one arm. He wasn't allowed much time to protest, however. Having since decided that speaking wasn't doing them much good, he allowed his companion to handle the situation for now, and at the yellow Inkling's warning, realization willed his confidence to return somewhat. That would be enough to keep them at bay, right?
Disbelieving laughter rippled through the three of them and the leading piranha snorted as if Iggy's threat little more than amused him. "Couple of kids like you carryin' guns around? I'll believe it when I see it." The grin fell from his lips and he continued in a low voice, his eyes flashing dangerously and mouth curved into a wicked snarl of jagged teeth. "Take 'im down."
In immediate response, the other two lunged forward with surprising speed; one of them delivered a powerful punch to Iggy's gut and then kicked his feet out from under him, successfully landing him on his back; the other seized his arms and held him down, his claws digging at the Inkling's skin. "Stay down, boy," he hissed, his breath hot and rank against Iggy's face. There was some kind of feral amusement in his gaze.
Casper, having stared for a moment in mute disbelief, suddenly snapped to attention as if startled from a daze. His features warped with anger, heart rate quickening and, without thinking, he tackled the piranha who had pinned Iggy, gripping at either of his sides in an effort to push him off. "Get off!" When his initial attempt didn't bear any results, however, he balled his hand into a fist and punched him in the side of the face, packing as much force behind the blow as he could manage.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] half of me's all about apathy & the other half just doesn't care [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The incredulous laughter that followed his threat wasn't exactly the response he was hoping for. Releasing a breath he didn't know he'd been holding, he reluctantly lowered his arm. So much for bluffing. As the piranhas recovered from their amusement and the first of them spoke, Iggy furrowed his brow, struggling to compose a second line of defense.
He'd scarcely a moment to consider their options before an order from their partner sent the other two piranhas lunging his way. Tensing at the sudden movement, he succeeded in little more than raising his arms in defense when a swift punch sent him staggering back. Pain lanced from his stomach, and before he could so much as catch his breath, he was knocked abruptly onto the pavement. Visibly dazed, he clenched his teeth and fought to ignore the nausea the first blow had inflicted, stiffly lifting a hand to hold his midsection. "Dammit..." His voice was breathless, the words spoken in a tone more frustrated than angry.
It was only seconds before he found his attempts at rising interrupted by the piranha's companion. Indignation rose in his features as his arms were held firmly in place, and with a reproachful glare, he curled his lip and strained to free himself. "You idiot - let go!"
The piranha's grip remained steady, unmoving even as Casper threw his weight against him. It wasn't until the Inkling's knuckles crashed into his face that he faltered, head snapping to the side from the force of the blow. When it turned again, slowly this time, the piranha's lips had peeled back in a rumbling growl. He righted himself, releasing his hold and turning to face the boy. Wide red eyes locked on Casper, he uttered, "Wrong move, kid."
Starting purposefully towards the Inkling, he drew his arm slowly back, fingers balled tightly into a fist. His eyes gleamed with anger, pupils narrowed to sharp slits. The piranha's arm abruptly extended, but before his knuckles could meet their target, his arm was torn off course and pulled tightly behind his back.
Both hands closed in a vice grip around the piranha's wrist, Iggy twisted his arm as roughly as he could manage, teeth gritting with effort. "Your gun!" Straining to keep his opponent's arm in place, he urged Casper, "Hurry!"
"I don't think so." Without warning, the leader took abrupt hold of Casper's collar, hoisting him up from the ground. He held him at arm's length, observing his face with a wicked grin. "You're mine." Staring up at the Inkling with an eager air a few moments longer, the piranha allowed his smile to fade and sent a punch sailing into his jaw. With the blow, he released his hold and allowed Casper to fall to the ground, wasting no time in placing his boot over the top of his chest. He gazed quietly down at the boy for a few seconds before leaning slightly forward, applying more weight to his chest as he did so. "I s'pose I'll be the one teachin' you some manners, since your mum clearly ain't." | commentary |

[attr="class","cas-link"] i'm a bad kid, i'm disastrous i don't know wrong from right [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The second his fist collided with the piranha's face, his head snapping abruptly to the side, Casper felt a rush of satisfaction, clenching either of his hands at his sides and preparing himself for the inevitable retaliation. When he turned to look at Casper, however, his expression teeming with fury, he felt his confidence rapidly waning. With every step the piranha took towards him, it dispersed, until all that was left in its place was fear. He shrank back, clenching his eyes shut, and mentally prepared himself for what was coming, when a pained groan escaped the creature before him.
It took him a moment to realize that Iggy had risen to his feet and taken hold of the piranha's arms, preventing him from advancing. Startled from a daze by the sound of his companion's words, realization passed over his face, lips parting. Then, with frantic, unsteady hands, he pulled his backpack off of his shoulders and unzipped it, reaching one hand inside when, with little more than a guttural utterance as warning, he was hoisted by his collar into the air, a startled gasp escaping him. His backpack fell to the ground, the dual squelcher landing a foot or so away from it with a clattering sound.
Heart thudding in his chest, he gripped instinctively at the piranha's oily wrist, writhing feebly in an effort to free himself. His teeth clenched, fear manifesting, and he stared, wide-eyed, at the one grinning wickedly before him. Then, as quickly as he'd been lifted, he fell back and collapsed upon the ground, a throbbing pain resonating from his jaw. His body ached from where he'd hit the ground. Wincing, he shifted slightly, realizing in the back of his mind that he tasted blood, when the piranha's foot planted firmly upon his chest and began to push.
Gasping for air, he tried in vain to shove his foot away, beginning to feel light headed from the pressure. He could hear the thrumming of blood in his ears. After a few moments of struggling, his head fell back against the pavement and he turned his face to the side, glimpsing his weapon just out of reach. Some kind of realization gripped him and, trying to ignore the fact that there was a piranha pinning him to the ground, he reached towards it, stretching his arm as far as he could - his fingertips barely brushed its surface.
Suddenly, something grabbed Iggy from behind. One of the larger piranhas took hold of his chest, effectively trapping his arms against his sides, and forced him away, pulling him in. "Nice try, but you forgot something," he said into the Inkling's ear, grinning. The piranha lifted his head and nodded at his friend, who had just finished collecting himself upon being restrained. "He's all yours."
Turning around, the second piranha faced Iggy, some mingled fury and fervor upon his face. "Don't mind if I do," he nearly growled, and advanced upon the boy, pulling a fist back and delivering yet another gut wrenching punch to his stomach. Then, without allowing Iggy a moment to recover, he gripped his face with his other hand and leaned in, hissing, "You've got a lotta nerve messin' with me, kid. I'm gonna make you regret that." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] half of me's all about apathy & the other half just doesn't care [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The sight of Casper's writhing elicited nothing more than a gratified chuckle from the piranha. Resting his arm over the top of his knee, he leaned his weight deliberately into his leg, feeling each strained breath the Inkling took. "Comfortable?" There was a satisfied tone in his voice. The piranha's smug gaze only wavered when he glimpsed the movement of Casper's arm, finding him reaching feebly for the weapon that lay just out of reach.
Barking out an amused laugh, he worked his fingers absently and shook his head down at the boy. "You think that little toy's gonna save you? Come on, kid." Bending down without bothering to spare Casper the additional weight the movement caused, he took up a fistful of the boy's shirt again and lifted him in one fluid movement out from under his boot.
"You oughtta learn how to pick your battles." He held Casper a moment longer in front of his face, an ugly sneer parting his lips, before throwing him carelessly onto the pavement again. "'Cause you picked wrong tonight."
Feeling himself tugged abruptly backwards, Iggy released the piranha's wrist as his chest was gripped and both arms held tightly at his sides. At the sound of a voice behind him, he strained to turn his head and spat, "Let go!" He twisted his shoulders, struggling to free himself. "You think this is impressive - three against two?" he hissed, adding vehemently as the piranha's companion approached, "At least you know your limits, you embarrassing--"
Voice cutting off into a thick gasp, he stiffened in immediate response to the blow, dizzied by pain. Iggy's head dipped forward, features contorting as the ache ran its course. He attempted to steady his breathing, nausea twisting in his stomach, and tightly clenched his teeth. The hand that closed forcefully around his face willed his eyes to open to narrow slits; when they did, they stung with tears. At the piranha's threat, Iggy said nothing, still struggling to quell the bile rising in his throat. His glare lowered to the fingers closed around his face, lips pilling slightly back to bare his teeth. | commentary |

[attr="class","cas-link"] i'm a bad kid, i'm disastrous i don't know wrong from right [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]When the pressure upon his chest increased, Casper's features twisted with strain and his arm went slack, the need for air overwhelming his previous intentions. Each breath he drew was more insufficient than the last, clipped and shallow, and his lungs felt as though they might collapse at any moment, his throat drawing tight. Light headed, his grip upon the piranha's boot grew weak.
Upon being hoisted into the air, he registered little more than the fact that he was capable of breathing again, and the instant creature's foot was taken off of his chest, he drew a trembling lungful of air, eyes going wide. In the midst of his strain, however, he felt a stab of fear and instinctively tried to distance himself from the piranha holding him up, turning his face away. Little more than a few seconds passed before he was thrown to the ground again, and this time he hit the pavement like a dead weight.
Nearly every inch of him ached. Feebly, he shifted upon the ground, trying desperately to get air into his lungs, but his throat had constricted, and every breath was as strained as it was shallow, an audible wheezing escaping him with each inhalation. He pressed his hands against the ground, trying to lift himself up, and turned his face to see the piranha pursuing him at a languid pace.
At the sound of the others' voices, however, Casper glanced towards where they'd taken to restraining Iggy. As he looked on, the piranha gripping his face gave a harsh laugh and sneered, "Not so brave now, are ya? You can act tough all ya want - I know what a weakling you really are." Roughly releasing Iggy's chin, he balled his hand into a fist and delivered a ruthless punch to the side of his face. Casper's heart staggered in his chest at the sight, his previously weak expression shifting with a sudden look of determination and eyes widening.
Willing himself to be strong, he forced himself to his hands and knees, and then shakily to his feet, sparing a frantic glance at the piranha approaching him and then at the gun just a few feet behind him. Clenching his teeth, he bolted forward, narrowly missing the piranha, and skidded to an abrupt halt behind him, crouching in the same motion and taking up his dual squelcher. Then, gripping it firmly with both hands, he whirled around and hit him across the face with the gun with all of the strength he could muster.
At the sound of the pained cursing that escaped him and the sight of the piranha recoiling, one hand over his face, Casper knew he'd managed to buy them some time. Then, without hesitation, he broke into a run at the two remaining piranhas and lifted the gun over the side of his shoulder, shouting, "Hey, assholes!" The precise second the piranha in front of Iggy turned his head, he brought the dual squelcher down against the side of his face, shoving into him for good measure. It was enough to send him roughly onto his side. The sound of thunder in the distance nearly drowned out his pained noises.
Then, lifting his gun again, he slammed it against the top of the remaining piranha's skull, gritting his teeth. When his arms went slack around Iggy, Casper shoved his companion to the side, perhaps a bit more roughly than he should have, and then lifted his foot, delivering a swift kick at the piranha's groin - he'd been aiming for his stomach, really, but perhaps the former was more effective, given the way the fish immediately collapsed, a low groan escaping him as he went.
It took a moment, but a disbelieving look had gripped Casper's features. It was quickly overtaken, however, by one of immense pride, and he began between shallow breaths, "How's that for -- for..." He paused, then cursed under his breath and turned, grabbing Iggy's arm. "Come on!" he said, urgency in his voice and upon his face. He started down the street, breaking into a run, and released Iggy only to snatch up his discarded jacket, heart thudding frantically in his chest. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] half of me's all about apathy & the other half just doesn't care [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The piranha's taunting didn't elicit much of a response. Iggy's features remained taut with strain, eyes lifting to the creature's face with a distinctly spiteful edge, but he said nothing. The relief he felt upon having his face released was small in comparison to the blow he knew was coming. Despite the attempts he made to brace himself, the crash of the piranha's fist still caused his head to jerk roughly to the side. His cheek throbbed violently with each passing second, the faint tang of blood welling in his mouth.
It wasn't until he'd recovered from his daze that Iggy glimpsed Casper running at full speed their way, gun in tow. Eyes widening in faint disbelief, he watched him crash his weapon into the piranha's face, dispatching his attack with an unceremonious shove before moving on to his next target. One blow was all it took for the other to release his arms. He was scarcely given a moment to gather his bearings before he was pushed out of the way, staggering slightly as the movement strained his bruised midsection. Iggy slumped, fighting to calm his rising nausea yet again as Casper delivered a finishing blow to the piranha behind him.
He'd only just begun to look back at his companion when Casper hurried past, taking his arm and tugging him along. Clenching his teeth, he tried to ignore the thickness in his throat and urged himself to keep pace with the blue Inkling, sparing a glance over his shoulder at the recovering piranhas.
The leader had since composed himself and reached his companions, still holding his jaw with features set in anger. "You idiots, get on your feet!"
Whatever else was said was drowned out by a distant rumble of thunder. Iggy tore his eyes away from the scattered group and glanced up at the sky, where the previously sparse clouds had begun to clutter in a dark and swollen mass. Taking shallow breaths, he gingerly straightened his back as they ran, ignoring the painful protesting of his stomach, and lengthened his strides as well as he was able.
Scanning the empty street ahead for a moment, he eventually brought his eyes to rest upon Casper, though they didn't linger there long. "We need to find somewhere to hide," Iggy managed, voice strained. He couldn't hear them over the gusts of wind stirring up the clouds, but he was certain the piranhas must be preparing to pursue them. "They'll outrun us." | commentary |

[attr="class","cas-link"] i'm a bad kid, i'm disastrous i don't know wrong from right [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Thoughts and heart racing, he fought to ignore the way his lungs screamed for air and pressed on, relieved when he glanced back at his companion to find Iggy keeping up, albeit with a look of visible strain upon his face. At the sound of the Inkling's voice he directed his attention forward again, breathing heavily, and replied between gasps, "I know - I'm -- I'm thinking!"
Gaze darting about their surroundings, he hesitated when he glimpsed an old building whose front door has been partially knocked off of its hinges. Eyes widening, he reached over and grabbed Iggy's wrist. "There! Come on!" A quick glance behind them was enough to inform him that the piranhas weren't far behind, and in swift pursuit.
Just then, what had started as the occasional raindrop quickly became a downpour, the telltale sound of thunder overhead almost sounding as though it had torn a hole in the clouds. Trying to resist the aching in his muscles, he ran for the building and pulled Iggy inside, his skin and clothes already damp from the rain. Releasing his companion's arm, he gripped the door and, with a grunt of effort, forced it closed as best as he could given its condition. Outside, in the midst of the rain and thunder, he could hear their voices growing closer.
Pressing his back against the door, he grit his teeth and surveyed their surroundings. It was dark, set aside the occasional flash of lightning, and there was broken furniture and trash scattered about the floor. Apart from a humble kitchen in the far corner, a closed door, and a few chairs, a coffee table, and a television, there wasn't much to see, not that it mattered. Interior decoration wasn't their primary concern. "Shit," he breathed, trying in vain to get a handle on his nerves. "What do we do now?" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] half of me's all about apathy & the other half just doesn't care [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Each breath drawn with increasing difficulty, Iggy forced himself not to look back, knowing fully well that the steady thudding behind them was more than just thunder. At their pace, it would only be a matter of time before they were caught. When Casper suddenly grabbed his wrist and started off to the side of the street, he forced himself to keep pace with his companion and stared dubiously ahead.
The sight of a weathered building along the roadside quickly caught his attention, and with a frantic glance over his shoulder, he found the piranhas steadily gaining on them. Iggy raised an arm to shield his eyes from the rain when it came pounding suddenly down, filling his ears with a noisy drone.
By the time they reached the building, he'd already been thoroughly drenched, lungs heaving and torso aching further with each breath. Lifting his head, he shook the water from his tentacles and surveyed the room while Casper secured the door. It was a mess, strewn with garbage and broken down furniture, but it would have to do.
Iggy gingerly righted himself, staring past Casper at the door, and heard the nearing sound of voices. His eyes darted about the room a second time. Fighting to catch his breath, he reached for his companion's sleeve and tugged him quickly into a nearby closet without waiting for a response. Once they were both inside, he released Casper's shirt and drew the door nearly shut, peering tensely through the narrow opening he'd left.
When no immediate sound or movement presented itself - save the roar of thunder and rain outside - Iggy released the doorknob and slumped heavily against the wall. The sting of bile in his throat had only worsened, and with a pained grimace, he placed a hand lightly over his stomach. "What a load of crap." Paying close mind to the sounds outside, Iggy strained to see Casper in the darkness and asked, voice hushed, "Are you hurt?" | commentary |

[attr="class","cas-link"] i'm a bad kid, i'm disastrous i don't know wrong from right [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Having turned his face to the side in an effort to see through the crack in the door, he gasped when Iggy took hold of his shirt and tugged him away. Upon realizing his companion was trying to hide them, however, he swallowed any protests he might have voiced and sank back against the back of the closet, pushing aside some old jackets as he did so with a breathy cough, wincing. It was far from comfortable, not to mention cramped, but at least it would keep them from sight if the piranha's pursued them inside of the building.
Coughing again, he covered his mouth and nose with one hand, giving thin, strained breaths. Casper could see Iggy's figure outlined just ahead of him through the faint light permitted past the slightly opened door. At his question, Cas hesitated, turning his face to the side, and gave another cough, this time a bit softer.
His muscles ached, and his jaw was still pounding painfully from where he'd been hit, but he'd live - worst of it all seemed to be his chest pain and the fact that it was difficult to breathe. He thought about what he'd seen the piranha's do to Iggy, though, and remained silent.
"I'm fine," he eventually managed, his voice strained, "It's just... dusty." Grimacing, he leaned his head back against the back of the closet and drew his jacket closer to his side with his arm. After a moment of silence, filled only by the storm outside and his rough breathing, he continued, "You?" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] half of me's all about apathy & the other half just doesn't care [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Aside from the occasional cough, Casper's ragged breathing didn't seem all that unexpected given their situation. Still, he could only wonder what sort of treatment he'd been given during their brief time apart; knowing the sheer size of those piranhas (not to mention strength) he wasn't very optimistic.
Even so, a relieved sigh escaped Iggy at his companion's reply. It was a better answer than he'd been hoping for. A disgruntled sound followed Casper's inquiry, and with a voice as nauseous as he felt, he muttered, "I might throw up, but otherwise I'm great." Taking a moment to peek through the door's opening, he ensured that they were still alone before carefully lowering himself to the floor. Iggy leaned back against the wall and permitted a long exhalation. "At least now your gun's ready if we need it." | commentary |

[attr="class","cas-link"] i'm a bad kid, i'm disastrous i don't know wrong from right [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]As the seconds passed, Casper tried to focus on steadying his breathing, though it wasn't nearly as simple a task as he'd hoped it would be. Certainly he had difficulty breathing from time to time, but being thrown around and stepped on certainly hadn't helped. His throat felt tight, and no matter how much he breathed in, he felt at a loss for air. He grimaced. It would pass soon, hopefully.
When Iggy replied, Casper hesitated, casting him a dubious, if not somewhat concerned, glance, and again fell silent. His brow furrowed. After a few moments of watching him, the blue Inkling turned his gaze away. Given the lack of noise out front, he wondered if the piranhas had passed them by; still, he wasn't particularly eager to go and check. An unreadable expression upon his face, he lowered his head slightly.
"... Sorry," Casper finally said, his voice uncharacteristically quiet and broken by the occasional tight inhalation, "If I hadn't asked you to come -- none of this would've happened." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] half of me's all about apathy & the other half just doesn't care [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Breathing steadily calming as moments passed, Iggy allowed his shoulders to relax with a heavy sigh. Despite his eyes having already adjusted to the darkness, he didn't bother returning Casper's glance. The sound of his companion's shallow breathing was still hushed in comparison to the thunder booming outside. When Casper spoke in an unusually quiet voice, a hint of surprise passed over Iggy's face.
Lifting his head slightly, he frowned at the blue Inkling, finding his eyes downcast. "It's not your fault," he said, the words matter-of-fact. "If I thought it would be dangerous, I wouldn't have agreed to come."
Iggy shifted against the wall before going still again, relieved to find that the movement resulted in a lesser pang than before. His hand absently brushed his cheek, eyes wandering back to Casper. "You saved our asses, remember? That could've been a lot worse." | commentary |

[attr="class","cas-link"] i'm a bad kid, i'm disastrous i don't know wrong from right [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Feeling a twinge of frustration at his own inability to steady his breathing, he furrowed his brow, features twisting with strain, and narrowed his eyes, his hand clenching a bit tighter around the lower half of his face. He'd yet to decide whether the feeling was worse than the guilt he felt, and though Iggy's response put him somewhat at ease, the feeling was still there. Doubtless no amount of comforting would make it go away.
Still, he managed a halfhearted "I guess" in reply, then fell silent again, if only for a few moments before he broke the quiet, lifting his gaze again. "You think they're gone now?" There was a rumble of thunder, and a breath later, lightning shone through the opening in the closet. "... Getting back is gonna be an even bigger pain in the ass now," he continued after a moment, then added with a breath of strained laughter, "I wonder what your mom's gonna think." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] half of me's all about apathy & the other half just doesn't care [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Casper's halfhearted response was met with a small frown, and though he drew a breath with the intention of reassuring him further, it passed from his lungs moments later. Iggy lightly shook his head, staring out of the closet as lightning split through the blinds and into the empty room. The sound of rain thrumming against the rooftop was drowned out by an immediate roar of thunder.
Staring absently down at his forearm and the cuts the piranha's claws had left there, Iggy drew his fingertips over each indent. They stung at his touch, and he allowed his hand to rest at his side once more. "I don't know," he admitted, casting a glance across the closet at Casper. "They could be waiting for us to come out."
Iggy little more than nodded in agreement at his companion's observation. He doubted the storm would subside any time soon. His expression was neutral for a moment, eyes focused absently on the floor, until Casper spoke again. This time, he felt the blood drain from his face.
"Oh, no." Hands unsteady with haste, he withdrew his phone from his pocket and stared in dawning realization at the rows of missed messages displayed upon the screen. Eyes wide, he allowed his phone to fall into his lap and lifted a hand to grip the side of his face. "I'm dead. I'm..." Iggy dropped his head against the wall and stared rigidly ahead. | commentary |
