Things certainly could have gone better. Settled over the railing of a concrete overhang, Iggy had (painstakingly) observed Casper's efforts, watching with a lingering frown as the blue Inkling struggled to complete the challenge at hand. With a time limit given and nothing but the vacant underpass present as an obstacle, it seemed a simple enough request: ink as much ground as possible in three minute's time. Despite the other boy's most determined efforts, the combined force of his weapon and copious amounts of struggling hadn't exactly... paid off. The deserted clearing wasn't exactly the most ideal setting for such a test, especially given its sparse street lamps, but he'd certainly anticipated a more promising turnout. At least he'd passed the 'Effort' portion of the tryouts with flying colors. Having since abandoned his position along the side of the underpass, Iggy surveyed the blue ink scattered about the clearing. "... You definitely gave it your all." It was all he could to do mask the cringe he felt tugging at his lips, but by some stroke of luck, Iggy's expression remained neutral. Crossing his arms, he cast Casper a sidelong glance and commented, "Too bad it's dark out, or you might've had an easier time seeing everything." He didn't want to make any assumptions about how Casper might have believed he'd performed - after all, the last thing he wanted was to crush his confidence. He had to have something going for him. Determination was all that kept him from immediately giving up.

After years of searching, he'd finally been given a chance, and he intended to make the most of it. What better way to prove himself than to give it his all? While far from confident in his ability, he'd never been the type to slack when it came to things he was actually passionate about - namely, Turf War. It was a shame he was so inexperienced, not to mention terribly out of practice. A part of him hoped Iggy simply wouldn't notice, but the larger, more sensible part of him knew he would.

By the time he finished the given challenge, though, Casper couldn't deny he felt fairly confident in his performance. He'd done better than usual; he could feel it. Unfortunately, he'd also completely exhausted himself within the span of just a few minutes. Panting heavily, he leaned over, sweat beading at his brow, and tried to catch his breath, forcing the thought of how tight his chest felt from his mind. Now was hardly the time to linger on how utterly exhausted he felt, and surely it would have been better to avoid looking as tired as he felt, but he couldn't find it within himself to care.

At the sound of Iggy's footsteps, he squinted, lifting his face, and wiped the sweat from his forehead, an expectant, albeit tired, smile making its way to his lips. "So? How'd I do?" It wasn't long before the realization hit him, however. Little more than the tone of the yellow Inkling's voice was all it took to clue him in to the reality of the situation. The smile fell from his lips immediately, replaced by a strained grimace, and he dropped his head again, groaning loudly. "Ugh, spare me. I fuckin' sucked, dude." Careless to even remain standing, he dropped onto his knees and then flopped dramatically onto his stomach, pressing half of his face into the ink-covered ground. "I might be an amateur, but I'm not an idiot," he grumbled miserably. "Your stupid teammates were right."

Watching the smile fade from Casper's face, he quietly cursed himself, averting his eyes at the sound of the other boy's exasperated reply. Biting his tongue, he grimaced a bit and glanced back at him. "No, you didn't... well..." Protest falling pitifully short, he sighed and rubbed at the back of his neck as Casper sank onto his stomach. Visibly pained, Iggy looked away, surveying the clearing as if to ensure that no one was watching. Maybe he hadn't been as gentle as he'd intended - or maybe he was just a really bad liar. Placing his hands on his hips, Iggy reluctantly returned his attention to Casper, staring down at the Inkling with a frown. "Hey... don't be like that," he started awkwardly, struggling to muster a suitable response. "You, uh..." He waved his hand absently as he spoke, managing little more than a feeble "You did your best." Helpful. Knitting his brow, he stared at the ground, going silent for a moment. "Just..." Iggy pinched the bridge of his nose, gesturing loosely down at Casper. "C'mon, man, get off the ground. It's not the end of the world," he urged the Inkling, pointing out with a heavy exhalation, "It's midnight. There's always tomorrow, alright?"

Fully intent on moping his disappointment away, Casper gave no response to Iggy's attempt at reassuring him. It was quite the pathetic display, really, and perhaps a bit out of the ordinary, but it was nothing too unusual for Cas - that is, laying face down on the ground and feeling sorry for himself. Whether he didn't care or didn't notice how uncomfortable it was making the other boy, though, one couldn't be certain.

"I told you, save it," Casper retorted, thoroughly defeated, if not a bit annoyed. "'Trying your best' isn't enough to stop someone from completely sucking." Allowing himself a few more seconds to feel like garbage, he eventually groaned and lifted himself off of the ground, sitting upon his heels and wiping his face with one hand. He permitted a dramatic sigh. "Whatever, though. I already knew I'm not any good." Turning his attention to Iggy, he gave the boy an expectant look. "Just give it to me straight - can you help me get better or not?" As a bit of an afterthought, he added rather hastily, "And you don't need to put me on your team. I just need someone to teach me -- I can pay you!"

Feeling progressively more uncomfortable as seconds ticked by and Casper still didn't budge, he stared with an unimpressed frown down at the other boy. Was this commonplace behavior for him? Surely his sub par performance didn't warrant such a temper tantrum. Pulling the corner of his mouth to one side, he drew a slow breath in an attempt to muster some patience and argued quietly, "You didn't 'completely suck'; you just need a bit more practice." Gesturing at their surroundings, Iggy added pointedly, "And it's night. These circumstances are what suck, okay?"He watched wordlessly as the other Inkling sat back on his heels, heaving an exaggerated sigh. Wondering where Casper's confidence had gone, he resisted the urge to shake his head and answered, "Yes, I can help, but just..." Words falling short at the boy's next offer, a look if incredulity took hold of his features. "What? Pay?" There was a note of exasperation in his voice. "We can discuss it on our way to the bus stop, alright? It's late enough as is."

Feeling very much like a toddler who hadn't gotten their way, Casper little more than groaned at the yellow Inkling's response. Sure, he was trying to help, but denying the obvious wasn't helpful - it was just annoying. Waving his hand dismissively, he picked himself up off of the ground and rose to his feet, feeling more irritated by the second. "The least you could do is be honest with me. I may suck at Turf War, but I'm not an idiot. 'Circumstances' have nothing to do with it." Huffing, he wiped the remaining sweat from his brow and looked elsewhere. "But... fine. Let's go, then."

Careless to mask his disappointment, he hopped over a bit of railing and then started towards the grassy hill leading to the main road, his shoulders slouched and a generally miserable demeanor about him. "God, I could use a drink," he grumbled to himself, rubbing his forehead as he went.

Knowing fully well that Casper's bout of complaining hadn't yet reached its end, Iggy stifled a sigh and steeled himself as the other boy lifted himself from the ground. When the anticipated whining came just seconds later, he sent an exasperated frown Casper's way. "I never said you were," he stated, adding pointedly, "Besides, you can still learn. Have some patience."Very much doubting that his companion would heed his words, he tucked his hands into his pockets and followed after Casper. The moon was high in the sky now, and all but their footsteps was silent. Only the occasional sound of a car passing over the distant freeway rose to interrupt the night's calm, and in the cold of the dark, dew had begun to accumulate, lightly weighting each blade of grass. Paying Casper's remark little mind, Iggy told him offhandedly, "There's a vending machine right over there." Without stopping to consider that maybe he'd misunderstood, he took a moment to shake the ink from the bottom of his sneakers and mumbled absently, "At least we'll be home soon."

Drawing a thin breath, he shook his head. "Yeah, yeah," he replied, sounding precisely as unenthusiastic as he felt. "Thanks." In spite of how ungrateful he sounded, he actually did rather appreciate Iggy's reassurance - even if a part of him felt as though it was entirely forced out of pity. He couldn't quite decide whether he preferred the thought of brutal honesty or false comfort. Trying not to think about it, he stepped onto the pavement at the top of the hill. The back alley was lit with dim, occasionally flickering street lamps, and though the light they provided wasn't ideal, it was better than no light at all. Sighing, he unzipped his jacket and slipped it off his shoulders, folding it messily and tucking it under his arm. Even if he had sucked tremendously, inking was surprisingly hard work.

At Iggy's mention of a vending machine, Casper hesitated and looked his way, appearing briefly baffled. "Huh--?" Though it took him a moment, when he realized the yellow Inkling's misunderstanding, his confusion was fleeting in place of blatant amusement, lips pulling back to form a delighted grin. "Seriously, dude? I'm talking about alcohol," he said, visibly entertained. "Unless the vending machine you're referring to sells that, I'm not really interested."

Looking up from the grass at the sound of Casper's voice, he blinked, dubiety plain on his face. The few seconds it took for his companion's words to register left him feeling more embarrassed than he would have liked to admit, and with a rough furrow of his brow, Iggy averted his eyes. "... My mistake" was his eventual reply. Only after some thought did he look back at Casper, this time with an air of skepticism. His lips parted, intent written clearly in his eyes, but a moment passed in silence before he seemed to think better of questioning the other boy and simply shook his head. Stifling a yawn, he commented at last, "You might benefit more from a bottle of water if you're tired."

Unaware of Iggy's skepticism, his grin merely broadened at the sound of his reply. He shook his head, looking away and laughing to himself. "Nah, I get it. You're not really about that lifestyle. Not everyone is. That's cool, I guess. Just... really boring." Scuffing his feet against the pavement, he continued on down the alleyway, grateful that it was so empty. The looming shadows didn't really unnerve him; he'd walked through these streets at night far too many times to count. Almost nobody else was ever around, save for the occasional bum.

It wasn't until the yellow Inkling spoke again that Casper paused, looking back at him so as to deliver the most disgusted glance he could possibly muster. "Ew, seriously? Water's gross. It doesn't even have flavor or anything."

He could only imagine what sort of 'lifestyle' Casper was referring to - one riddled with regret and disappointment, most likely. Rather than voice his disapproval (though he deeply wished it was his place to do so), he withheld a sigh and observed bluntly, "I can live with that."
With the clearing steadily distanced from sight, Iggy lengthened his strides somewhat so as to more closely match his companion's pace. He'd returned to minding his own business when he felt the other boy's eyes on him. Frowning, he returned Casper's gaze only to find an expression of plain revulsion there. Taken aback for a moment, he hesitated, realization taking abrupt hold of his features at the sound of his remark.
Iggy paused, scrutinizing Casper's face for several seconds in an attempt to detect some hint of amusement. When no such trace presented itself, he realized with a feeling of incredulity that he was entirely serious.
The urge to point out the absurdity of the blue Inkling's words was pressing, but he deigned to move on and simply shook his head, dismissing the matter with an uttered "Silly me."  | commentary |

'Boring' was an interesting way to put it, but he made no attempt at arguing (it wouldn't have done any good anyways).
Hunching his shoulders as they walked, he narrowed his eyes at the back of Casper's head as the other Inkling went on, again without any trace of doubt or hesitation. Either he'd never heard of manners or he simply didn't care to waste his time using them.
"Besides getting wasted?" He hummed in feigned thought, tapping his forefinger against his lips. "Oh, or 'clubbing'? That's a tough one."
Pleased with his immature jab, Iggy returned his hands to his pockets and fought the smugness from his expression. "I don't know - nothing important. Why's it matter?" | commentary |

"Whatever, man," was all he said, clicking his tongue in blatant disapproval. "Like I said: don't knock it 'til you try it." Of course, he couldn't imagine the yellow Inkling enjoying either of those things for the life of him. Even getting him to try them seemed too much of a stretch. Maybe he was just destined to be boring.
As if an echo of his own thoughts, Iggy's voice reached him and he had to fight the urge to cast the boy another incredulous look. "Dude, did you seriously just admit to being boring?" He couldn't help but look sideways at his companion, one eyebrow arched in disbelief. "You're not even gonna try and defend yourself? Do you even have anything? For real, I'd accept 'knitting' as a legitimate hobby at this point. Honestly... 'nothing important' my ass. Nobody's actually that uninteresting." | commentary |

Of course, he should have anticipated that his companion wouldn't take his vague reply for an answer, but that didn't mean he couldn't hope that was the case.
A humorless laugh escaped him at Casper's suggestion. "Knitting? Maybe I should give that a try." Otherwise, he said little to the blue Inkling, unfazed by his reproachful words. Amusement rather than offense manifested in his expression as Casper went on, and with an incredulous furrow of his brow, Iggy observed, "So you're testing me now, is that it?" Why Casper seemed so distraught over his unresponsiveness was beyond him, but that didn't make it any less entertaining.
"Had I known I was signing up for a personality test..." Waving his hand, he drew a languid breath and finished, "I don't know... I take it music is boring, too, smart guy?" | commentary |
