at most I'm sleeping all these demons away
"You need a hobby, Khyran."
He was mopping the floors just outside of the Inkopolis tower with one of his co-workers. It was after hours and they were just finishing up, but a couple of Inkling kids had spilled a good bit of soda just a few minutes before closing.
"I have hobbies." Khyran lied.
"I don't see you around town. What do you do? Wake up, go to work, and then go home?"
Khyran gave a noncommittal shrug.
"Well..." His co-worker sighed, tossing a rag into his wash bucket. "There's an art exhibition at the Swordfish Museum tonight. It's going to feature local artists... Up-and-comings, that sort of thing. You should go. I think you'll like it."
"Okay." Again, Khy kept his response noncommittal. He didn't feel like going out in public, though an art museum sounded less intensive than being asked to go to a concert or movie. At least he figured it would be quiet and people wouldn't look at him too much. The only question is if he would work up the willpower to actually go.
Well... Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. He thought. The alternative is going home and watching TV... And there wasn't even anything interesting on lately, anyway.
* * *
When Khyran thought of "art", he thought of sweeping, colorful landscape paintings, precise portraits and anatomically accurate sculptures. What he didn't think of was blobs of color, rectangles attached to rectangles, and canvases that looked like they had been run over and then stuck up on the wall of Turf War before being framed and slapped in an exhibit.
Still, here he was, wearing his best set of clothes (which wasn't all that impressive) and limping through the sparsely populated halls. He hoped he wouldn't run into anyone he knew. Then again, he didn't really know many people anyway. OPEN THREAD Humboldt Hope this is ok shdkdkfkdlfldjfkfl MADE BY VEL OF GS

Humboldt stood in front of a painting that was completely black save for seven white dots. He was wearing a black tuque and hoodie with green and red lettering on it. The sound of approaching footsteps reached his ears. He glanced sideways and saw a man who looked at least twenty years older than him shuffle around the corner. From the way he looked around, he wasn't used to museums.
Humboldt spoke up to the man. "This is the Monochrome Hall. A friend of mine painted this one. She left it untitled." He paused. "Do you think it's better that way?"

at most I'm sleeping all these demons away As Khyran wandered into the Monochrome Hall, he saw a fellow glancing his way. Lots of people looked at him in public but always looked away moments later, as he walked so loud on his fake leg he might as well be banging a drum while he was at it. But the black-clad fellow didn't seem keen on moving away from the approaching stranger. Rather, as Khyran walked up to glance at the painting, the stranger engaged him in dialogue.
Khy looked over at the painting. He thought it was rather plain. Perhaps leaving it untitled was fitting for it... or just lazy? He hummed a little, deep in his throat. "I'm not sure," he answered honestly. "I'm no artist. And I'm no critic, either. But if I had to guess... leaving it untitled would either leave the work open to interpretation for the viewer, or... just shows that the person who painted it didn't care about it enough to name it."
His hand lifted to rub at his the tentacled "hair" on his chin. "I'm going to assume the former, of course... if they didn't care about it, it probably wouldn't have ended up in a gallery. Unless... that's the point." Khyran chuckled a little. "See, now I'm overthinking it... I always overthink things, I've found. Doesn't exactly leave a lot of room in my own head for peace and quiet."
He looked over at the Inkling, eye trailing up and down, as if noticing him for the first time. "Do you have many artist friends, then?"MADE BY VEL OF GS

A faint smile crossed the young inkling's lips. "Most of them, yes. There aren't a whole lot, but they all like either art or music."
The smile faded slowly as he looked into the man's eye. An discomforting quiet settled over the hall, but Humboldt didn't seem to take notice. His gaze was intense and piercing. It seemed as though he was trying to form an invisible bridge between them through sheer force of will.
Humboldt blinked first. He turned his head to the painting briefly, then back to the man. The look of almost zenlike scrutiny was gone, a warm smile in its place. "I'm sorry, I haven't told you my name yet. I'm Humboldt. Who are you?"

Khyran felt the younger Inkling staring at him and he looked away, pretending to be focused on drawing some hidden meaning out of the painting. On occasion he gave the other a split-second glance, to see if he was still looking at him- and, more likely than not, he was. As the silence lingered, Khyran wondered if he should just move on.
Then, the younger squid saw fit to give introductions, just as Khyran was deciding he might be on his way. He stopped, looking over at the fellow more fully now, and giving him a faint smile that hardly touched his dull-silver eye. "I'm Khy." He answered. "Uh... out of curiosity, are any of the paintings in this gallery yours?" He wasn't sure why he asked, but something about Humboldt struck him as an artist type. He felt he might not be far off the mark.

Humboldt frowned as he looked down the hallway. "No, they only wanted the paintings that were..." He gesticulated, searching for the right words. "Well, when I paint, I try to capture pure feeling. Emotion, energy, the soul of the memory of the moment or whatever you want to call it. The people putting on this exhibition actually did offer to display a couple of my pieces, but they were just too, y'know..."
He put his hand to his chin and made a plaintive gesture. "See, I'm from the Emerald Coast. And there's a lot of bad stuff that's been going on there for a while. Revolution, war. Hungry people. Hurt people. Terrible things. Now, I'm not defined solely by current events. I'm more than just some pitiable refugee. I'm a person. I'm someone. I have a whole range of emotions and memories. I paint all kinds of things. Joy, apprehension, optimism, coldness and warmth, a cold night, a fresh day, grass and dirt and asphalt, and, uh, trees and sunlight and, and blue skies and big fluffy clouds..."
Relaxing his shoulders, he let out a sigh. "But all they wanted to talk about was the bad stuff. They only wanted to show off the paintings of sadness and anger, scenes of war. Suffering." He turned to face Khy directly. "I'm more than that, you know? A lot more. A whole lot more. And I don't want anyone's first impression to be a painting of some... some horrible scene. Grays and reds. I wanted my happier works to be put up. Yellows, and greens, and blues. Softness and warmth. Light."
Humboldt looked down to his shoes. "I don't think I'm ready to show such depressing things to anyone who walks in. Like, someone said that I should, to raise awareness and stuff, y'know? Raise the profile of what's going on back home." He looked back up. "But I just... I can't show it on someone else's terms. It would have to be an exhibition put on just about my works. And I'm just not quite there yet. Maybe that's selfish. I don't know. I send what money I can home. And I would only get 'paid in exposure' for this."
Humboldt paused. He seemed a little less distant, a little less burdened. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to vent."

at most I'm sleeping all these demons away
Khyran was expecting a simple "yes" or "no" and a brief explanation thereof. Then he was expecting the two would say, "good day" and head their separate ways.
What he wasn't expecting was this. A humble, heartfelt, and honest reflection from an Inkling who had seen more than his years and far beyond it.
Khyran looked at Humboldt as if noticing him for the first time. He stood there, entranced, feeling both a great weight had both been given and lifted at the same time. His own issues felt silly now. Or maybe they didn't.
He had completely lost interest in the gallery and the paintings. For as much as an image could attempt to communicate, they never made him wrestle with the paradoxial truth of reality than people like Humboldt. The real interest in the museum was standing right in front of him. He laid bare his heart without any provocation and Khyran felt duty-bound to reciprocate.
"I've... seen my share of war." Khy told him quietly, pretending once more to look at the painting on the wall instead of Humboldt's eyes. "Some of my best friends before the war started were Octolings. Kids from the street I grew up with." He swallowed thickly. "...My brothers, sisters... their families. All our enemies, all of the sudden..."
His fists clenched at his sides. The untitled painting looked like it was moving now, if he thought hard enough, he could probably see one of those little white dots forming a crosshair. Everything around him black but a single hole where he could put a bullet in someone's head.
"I admire your ability to hold on to the good things." He said, finally looking over at Humboldt. "If I were an artist, I don't think anything I could make would be happy." He trailed off into silence, looking over at the far wall. Or rather, through it. "The... things I've done and seen... overshadow everything else."

While Khy was lost in the painting, Humboldt took the opportunity to get another look at him. The eyepatch, the torn ear, the prosthetic leg. He had his suspicions, but the man's words had just confirmed them. This was a lonely and troubled veteran in desperate need of someone to talk to. Humboldt knew what could happen if he didn't do something now.
He shuffled half a step forward, bringing Khy's attention back to him. "Hey, listen, none of these works may be mine, but I still know this place pretty well. I, uh. I actually know some of the folks who have painted these," here he gestured, "and I could kind of walk you through some of them if you'd like." He put on a smile he hoped was warm enough.

[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] [break][break] Something about the way Humbold looked at him made him uncomfortable. It wasn't just the simple passing glance that strangers gave each other. It was calculating- like he was inspecting him under a magnifying glass. Even so... he found it hard to blame the fellow. Finding that they had such an unfortunate thing in common, it struck a chord with him. [break][break] When Humboldt offered to show him the rest of the gallery, Khyran obliged with a nod and a, "sure... I'd like that." His voice came out quieter than he was anticipating. As if he felt speaking too loudly might break something. [break][break] He would follow Humboldt through the gallery, and only spoke if he was spoken to. He didn't see any paintings that he particularly liked, but he found he enjoyed the simple presence of being in someone else's company. It wasn't often that he found himself in a social situation that he wished to be extracted from as soon as possible. [break][break] However, when they reached the end of the exhibit, Khyran found himself looking down at the fellow with a gratefulness in his eyes that he couldn't quite hide. "...Thank you." He told him. "...It... isn't every day that... well." He drew in a deep breath. "...I... hope we can do this again some time. If... that's not ... weird. To say." [break][break] [break][break]

Post by Humboldt on Jan 25, 2016 17:51:52 GMT
Humboldt had enjoyed walking Khyran through what he thought were some of the more noteworthy works in the Swordfish Museum. It was obvious that his new acquaintance was very much out of his element, but he had listened to Humboldt's thoughts and opinions on each piece of art. He'd even paid attention when he went off on tangents. That was rare.
All too soon, they had reached the end of the impromptu tour. Khyran gave his halting but sincere thanks, which Humboldt accepted with a polite smile. He was about to say his goodbyes and walk away, but something stopped him. He knew that this man wouldn't have a chance to enjoy someone else's company for a long time. Humboldt didn't ordinarily do this, but...
"No, it's fine. I'd like that. Actually, my studio isn't far from here. If you feel like stopping by - tonight, tomorrow, a week or a month from now - my doors are always open to you. There's plenty of finished and unfinished paintings to observe if you didn't get your fill of art today, and... and scintillating conversation to be had. Any color, time, or topic you like."
God, I hope I can help him, he thought.

[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] Khyran considered the younger man’s words in silence for some time. His eye drifted down to the floor as he thought. “...I would appreciate that a lot.” He answered. “...Perhaps I’ll take you up on that. Though… I’m not in the habit of dropping in places unannounced. D… do you have a cell phone?” [break][break] He never thought he’d see the day when he’d ask a stranger for their number.
