During the night at Booyah Base, when the music must be turned down for nearby hotels and houses to sleep, recently there have been rumours about a ghost going around. A figure with it's face never turned to the crowds that jumps from shadow to shadow, with only traces of white being shown on it's tentacles before it goes out of sight. And on nights when the Moon is clear in the sky and the stars are shining, a song can be heard if one decides to listen in over the music already playing in the main hub.
"Miiiirror......... Tell me sooooomething....... Tell me who's the loooooooneliest.... of all....."
The voice sung in a sweet, yet sad tune as the melody had emotion and substance to it that made it feel somewhat honest. No-one had met this mystery singer, and it didn't seem like it was fine with meeting other people. Yet it yearned for someone to be with, to not be lost any more and have someone with it. Truth is, this 'ghost' was but a shy Inkling who wasn't brought up the best way, and hence had a natural shyness and maybe even fear of what people are like. Despite her Granny's best efforts to make her more social, Hanako was still not the best at being friendly. So, the old inkling told her that if whenever she needed to get something off of her chest, she could maybe sing it if she wasn't brave enough to talk about it to someone. And that's how the singing phantom began.
"Mirror Tell me something Tell me who's the loneliest of all?"
Every night she would go over by the Dojo right next to the Recording Studio for the Squid Sisters, and using the stairs covered up by a sign which she manages to get around (Though tonight she accidentally left it a bit ajar, meaning anyone could go up there now), she makes her way up to the top of the building and take a look at Booyah Base from a higher perspective. Less people around, but there were still some here and there that were chatting away or waiting for the train. Maybe a nightly Turf War if they were feeling up to it. She could see everything, and she wanted to be a part of it, but she was just so...... scared.
"Fear of.... What's inside me.... Tell me can a heart be turned, to stoooooone?"
She wanted to reach out, be like anyone else. But thanks to her parents, she couldn't be like anyone else.
"Mirror, Mirror what's behind you? Save me from the things I see I can keep it from the world, why won't you let me hide from me?"
Maybe..... maybe all she needed was a push. A push from someone who was kind enough to perhaps help her out and understood the pace she needed to go at in order to get used to the crowd. She just needed someone.
"Mirror, Mirror, tell me something.... Who's the loneliest of aaaaaaalllllllllll....."
But then again.
"I'mmmmm the lonliiiiesssst of.... aaaaaaalllllllllll..........."
Who did she have?

Jackson wasn't usually one for rumours. Sure, he'd hear them, but he never really took them to mind. In his experience, all they led to were trouble and disappointment, practically just a small step up from gossip. But throughout the day... no, the week, he'd been hearing about a ghost. A singing ghost.
And here I was thinking ghosts were supposed to moan Jackson had thought. Wherever he went, even at home, people were abuzz with this... ah... "news". That night, he'd stayed late at the Base doing Ranked Battle, and lost track of time. He wasn't busy, so he didn't mind. What DID bother him, however, was that he was late for the train back home.
Sprinting as fast as he could, he could see the train pulling up to the station. He was almost there! He ran his feet even more, almost there... -Ngh! He felt his right foot stop, blocked by the other before he tumbled to the ground. Oww... WAIT! NO--! It was too late. He watched in a mix of emotion as the train left him in the station.
"Oh come on!" Jackson stood up and yelled at the train. It didn't respond. Rude! He was at a loss for what to do now. He took out his phone and tried to call home, but nobody answered. It was pretty late anyway... his mom was likely fast asleep.
Right when he acknowledged the time, Jackson's thoughts drifted towards the rumours. He felt chills go up his spine, and thought he saw a figure go by the Dojo. Don't be stupid, he thought immediately after. It was just your nerves playing tricks on you... me. He stopped to be sure. Nothing. He began to make his way to the station again, but his nerves got the better of him and he looked towards the dojo one more time. This time he saw something go up to the top of the building through a set of stairs, stairs normally obstructed by a sign. He looks around at the few people still at the plaza... nobody else noticed. He looks at the stairs again... Was that the ghost? Are the rumours true? ... I am going to hate myself SO MUCH for this, but I think I should go up those stairs...
Jackson slides behind the sign and makes his way up the stairs. As he gets closer to the top, he hears singing. Great singing. He keeps climbing, now trying to be quieter so he can hear the song. The song is indescribable to him. When he finally reaches the top, he looks around at the plaza below him. But then straight ahead is a lone, rather tall, pink-ish inkling singing. He tries to stay still as to listen... ... wait... ... oh no... ... "ahh... ah... AH-CHOO! ... sorry." Way to be a good listener, me.

Though the rumours haven't been around all that much, the popularity of 'The Singing Phantom of Booyah Base' has been getting higher with each day. At first, it was just speculation. But eventually it saw some popularity with the more curious crowd and people have been trying to search for clues regarding to the ghost itself. People were looking around occasionally, they tried to figure out who's voice it was. But it was all a mystery.
A voice never heard before that suddenly appeared out of the dead of night. And it didn't haunt as much as it rather soothed the late night guests with her beautiful voice. Sometimes since people were already drowsy, her singing tended to make them fall asleep on the benches, leaving the rumour that she could also supposedly make people fall asleep with her tunes. When really it was just people getting too tired and sleeping themselves. Nothing much related to Hanako in that case.
When Jackson sneezed, Hanako flinched and turned around slowly. Looking quite afraid as she spotted another person on top of the building with her, who apparently found her hiding spot. The shy inkling 'eep'ed as she looked backwards and saw the edge of the building, so that wasn't anywhere to go, so instead she hid behind the billboard that was there. But before that happened, the other pink tentacled inkling managed to get a look at the 'ghost's face.
Gentle, soft, a tentacle that covered one eye, golden eyes that shone with the lights on top of the building they were on. And pale-ish skin. Though a bis ghostly looking when she was scared, when she was normal she actually looked like the average run-of-the-mill inkling with some white on the edges of her tentacles.
"W-What are you doing up here?....."

The other inkling makes an "eep" sound and looks behind herself at Jackson with a single, golden, shining eye. Just as quick, if not faster she ducks behind a billboard in a blur of pink and white. Jackson feels himself begin to sweat a little. All right, that was DEFINITELY my nerves but that looked a lot like a ghost for a second there. He contemplates leaving the "ghost" be, but some part of him makes him stay.
Jackson turns towards the billboard. For all he knows the inkling could have gone away while he wasn't looking, but yet he faces the billboard and attempts a proper greeting. "Hello..." he coughs. Huh-whoa that was awful. Before he can try again the other inkling speaks,
"W-What are you doing up here?....."
Okay so she is behind the billboard, and that is a very good question. "I... think I was..." Jackson stops. He really has no clue what he was doing up here. I could say I was listening to her... no. Following my instincts? ... no... After a mildly long pause he finally continues, "I think I was going to ask your name." ... ... ... "If you don't mind me asking... ah... what IS your name?" Jackson says, taking a few steps towards the billboard.

Hanako's colours might be pale, but she never thought of herself as a ghostly figure. But in the night, it would be fair to accuse her of being such a spectral being. With the tendency to be alone and unseen, and the movements she was doing to sneak up to the roof, it was probably that too that helped with the rumour.
Hiding shyly behind the advertisement board, the shy squid listened to jackson and his movements. A weak hello and cough was heard first, before footsteps which were walking towards her direction, making Hanako a bit nervous. But she remembered what her Grandmother said and tried taking some deep breaths as the situation wasn't as bad as she mainly thought it was, but it was still bad none the less.
"I think I was going to ask your name." was what the unexpected company said to her. No-one had ever wanted to do that. Not before, not now. It was plain curiosity from Jackson, and she might as well give him what he wanted, since he seemed nice and trustworthy enough.
"My..... name?" Hanako asked, peeking half of her head out shyly along with a hand over the side of the billboard. "Hanako...... Hanako Van Gogh.... What about you?" her voice quiet and showing she wasn't exactly comfortable just yet, but at least was making an effort to try and hold the conversation with Jackson for a bit. He at least managed to get the inkling girl to peek her head a bit, and for her to show herself was a feat considering how she's been hiding all this time.

Hanako looked just around the billboard at Jackson and talked in a quiet voice. "Hanako...... Hanako Van Gogh.... What about you?" Another moment of silence passed. Jackson shifted his feet uncomfortably, the tone of Hanako felt uneasy. Afraid, even. Jackson never really thought of himself as scary. Though before he could go down a mental whirlpool he realized that he never answered her back. "My name... Jackson. Jackson Mantamute. Good to meet you." He said. Rather quietly now too, he noticed. Though his speech stopped dead again, same for his thoughts. Hanako was still looking at him from behind the billboard, and Jackson was feeling pressured by himself to try and keep conversation with the intriguing inkling. Gotta say something... "So... sorry for sneaking up on you... You're a rell-er-really good singer." ... ... ... ... actually maybe I should've stayed quiet.

The supposed 'singing phantom' peeked more of her head out slowly as they continued talking. It was easy, and both of them were being quiet and not the best at talking, but despite that it actually encouraged Hanako to try and talk more. Someone as quirky and strange as Jackson seemed like ok company for her, nothing too forced as he seemed a bit uneasy himself.
Eventually a fair amount of the female was no-longer hidden by the billboard and she was in more of a view for Jackson to see. A white soft looking sweater with sleeves that were too long to the point that they covered her hands, and yet instead of looking silly it just made her look..... cute. Red skirt that faded darker around the edges, the mix of white and red clothing seemingly fitting considering her pink tentacle colour.
Though still sounding shy, Hanako at least had less fear in her voice and instead more curiosity to this company she had. "That's a nice name....... Sounds kinda like those fluffy doggies I saw in those books. What were they called again?..... Malma.... Mala.. ummm..." she said, second part was supposed to be to herself but Jackson could probably hear it. The female inkling was obviously linking the similarities of the male's surname of 'Mantamute' with the breed of dog known as 'Malamute'. Either there were books on the dogs, or some managed to survive and there has been chat of them.
Though Hanako's cheeks blushed when her singing was complimented by Jackson, leading her to cover her face with her sweater-sleeve covered hands. Again, making her look somewhat cute as it wasn't scared covering her face, more-so she wasn't used to this kind of attention (Hence a more shy look) and looked over her hands while still covering the blush. "T-t-thank you..... You're the first person apart from my Grandma to say that." she wasn't hiding behind the billboard anymore, but still she hid her face while the blush went down and wasn't seeming all to afraid anymore. Shy and embarrassed? Yes. Scared? Not at all.

Hanako began to move out from behind the billboard. Jackson noticed her clothes coordinated with her color. Illuminated by the streetlights, she looked... pretty. Though he still could talk to her just fine, he was more comfortable now that she'd shown herself and was talking normally. Before he almost felt like he was pressuring her too much.
"That's a nice name....... Sounds kinda like those fluffy doggies I saw in those books. What were they called again?..... Malma.... Mala.. ummm..." Jackson didn't quite understand dogs, he didn't quite see the difference in them from cats. He waited until Hanako looked back at him from her thoughts, and he accepted the compliment silently with a smile. I never really thought of my name as... fluffy.
When Jackson complimented Hanako, she reddened and buried her face in her sweater-hands. Jackson blushed a bit too, but more out of surprise. "T-t-thank you..... You're the first person apart from my Grandma to say that." He raised an eyebrow at this comment. "R-really? That's... surprising. I mean--surprising that nobody else ever said so... 'cause that was some really good singing. Do you sing often?" At this point, Jackson felt more like he was in a real conversation. It was nice, though he hoped he could hear Hanako sing a little more before he had to head home.

Before the blushing happened, Hanako did smile softly at the reaction she got to her dog comment. She was certain he was going to be confused or just thought she was acting a bit crazy, but luckily that wasn't the case for her.
Back to the moment at hand, the shy inkling nodded at Jackson's comment as he was the first one apart from her grandmother to say that. She only managed to sing after she was with a more peaceful caretaker, hence her Grandma Lily was someone close to her. "That's probably because I..... I'm..... I'm not the best with people. Neither were my parents, but my Grandmother always is social. I've been practising with her but I can't seem to approach people...." she said with a sigh.
Taking her hands away from her face as the blushing was all done, Hanako continued on with what she was saying "That's when the taught me to sing. I do it often because it helps me get my emotions out, and I don't have to directly talk to anyone. So it kinda works, and I guess I do sing often. Considering what people have been saying about me." she said with an awkward giggle. She never expected for someone to actually follow her, though someone was bound to be curious at some point about the singing.
"Though the rumours seem to be bringing more people to Booyah Base. People even sometimes wait around at night, I think for the songs I sing. So.... you think you can keep this a secret, for the most part? If they like my singing, I wanna make sure I can entertain them for as long as I can, and this way I don't get afraid." Turning around, Hanako took a look at the hub area as there were still some inklings looking around, probably the voice that suddenly stopped singing. Then, she looked at the stars and smiled sweetly. "It's amazing how something like music brings so many people together, despite our differences. I wonder......"
A silence was had before the female inkling turned around and smiled awkwardly. "S-sorry for going all philosophical there for a second. I sometimes drift off in thought..." she said, going back to the shy stance and look. But she had a smile on her face, a genuine smile on her face as she had finally had some kind of interaction with someone-else that didn't go downhill. It felt..... nice. "O-oh! When do you have to catch a train? I saw you trip by the station I think.... Or was that someone else?"

Jackson kept listening to Hanako. It might've been his imagination, but she seemed to be opening up to him. He nodded in honest sympathy when she said she had trouble approaching people. He might not understand her situation to a perfect point, but he got enough of it to try and be supportive. When she said she enjoyed singing like this, he perked up a bit. "Well it's good that you're able to express yourself. Y'know... even though nobody's ever told you that you're good at singing except your grandma and me, I'm sure if you keep singing like you do... uh... amazing stuff will happen. I mean, look at how many people like you already! That's no secret. ... ... I sounded a lot like a greeting card there, didn't I?" He laughed a bit to himself. Kinda butchered my speech too... "But yeah, my mouth is shut." He pretended to zip his lips with his hand.
"It's amazing how something like music brings so many people together, despite our differences. I wonder......" Jackson quieted down as Hanako looked away and into the sky. Silence fell once again. Hanako turned back around and smiled a small smile. "S-sorry for going all philosophical there for a second. I sometimes drift off in thought..." Jackson smiled right back. "Well, that makes two of us. Just between us, though, I'd say some things are meant to be wondered rather than solved... ... ... that's... all I got." He put on a embarrassed-type grin and looked at her. Then, all of a sudden, she looked startled.
"O-oh! When do you have to catch a train? I saw you trip by the station I think.... Or was that someone else?" "Ah! T-train? ... oh yeah, I guess I probably do have to go home at some point. Don't worry though. It's pretty late, the... uh... last train for today, I think, should be coming in about 15 minutes. But yeah, that was me who fell down. I'm fine now, but it happens more often than you'd think. Don't worry about it... okay, off topic, sorry, but do you play Turf War?" Jackson asks this question to almost every person he meets, he likes hearing about how people experience it, positively or negatively. It's kind of like an obsession to him.

Despite being shy, when approached the right way she can open up easily. It just takes the right approach to get Hanako talking with someone else. And the way that Jackson acted, the way he spoke, it felt like it was honesty. What he was saying, the fact that he came up here just because he was curious about spotting Hanako while she was on her way up. Jackson wasn't mean, cruel, or intimidating. Instead he was awkward, quirky and funny. Hence shattering the perception her parents were trying to push on her, and making the female inkling purposely try to see what he was like to prove her parents wrong. Though her actions and movements showed that it was still not the best for her as she was a bit shy even after opening up.
Though a happy smile came up on her face at the male inkling's words. "I-I don't think I'd be able to handle having so much attention on me at one time...." Hanako said, seeming a bit afraid of singing and drawing a massive crowd, potentially getting herself seen. But she then calmed down and thought about the positive things. "But...... I-it'd be kinda flattering to have people staying back just for me... Even if it is kinda scary..." A mix between loving and hating the idea of a crowd, ahh.... the irony of it all. Though she did fear it mainly.
Nodding at the statement that Jackson made about some things are only meant to be wondered and not solved. Not sure how to respond to that as, although she herself gets philosophical at times, Hanako wasn't the best when it came to understanding other people's point of views. So she just nodded since a bit was understood.
"Okay, off topic, sorry, but do you play Turf War?" Jackson asked, leading to a headshake by Hanako. "I haven't played a public match. Though I do sometimes practice weapons in the firing range, or play some privately when my grandparents want me to get out a bit. Umm... I-I like the inkbrush the most. It's good for drawing, and running away if I need to."

Jackson was glad he made someone happy. Hanako seemed very accepting of his words, even though said words were kinda cheesy. He felt like he was supporting her when she needed it, and not exactly... purposefully. It was a feeling he liked very much, to be able to help by just being himself. And to think I was against coming up here in the first place. Funny how things turn out. He smiled to himself and listened to her and her dilemma with crowds. To be fair, he probably couldn't handle a crowd either. But he silently agreed that if he could make someone feel good, it'd be nice even if he didn't get anything back.
Looking around for a moment before Hanako responded to his question, Jackson had never been this high above the Base before. It looks like almost like a different place without all the crowds and all the shops quieted down... He looked back, putting his feet in a more comfortable position and listened to her experience with Turf War.
When Hanako finished, Jackson realized he was staring straight at her eyes, something he doesn't usually do when talking. All he could see was the one, golden eye from before. Not that it bothered him, he just never really took time to notice that trait before. It was intriguing. Then he actually realized that he was staring STRAIGHT AT HER EYES. Kinda sharply. He shook himself back to focus with a small "bluh" sound. "Sorry." Did she notice? He kept talking, kind of to the side now, "uh... Inkbrush is pretty cool. I've seen some crazy good brush users in my days. I just use it when I'm feeling down. For some reason it feels better in my hands when I'm not in a good mood... I... er... never... um, I never really thought about it's drawing capabilities..." He looked back at Hanako, though rather off-focus with his thoughts still going... Aw geez why did I have to stare? Inkbrush art sounds amazing. Did I look angry? How long was I staring?

It was always interesting to see such usually populated areas suddenly so.... empty. During the day, Booyah Base was full of fresh squids, jellyfish, and all kinds of people who were all busy and having a good time crowded together. Whereas during the night, it gets a lot quieter. It feels empty(mainly because it was) and actually fairly large without having to squeeze past so many people. Though the same can be said about any place really. Depends on the time of day and season, and Hanako has been up there to see Booyah Base every day, every season, seen the different kinds of the hub and what people appear when.
Being in the background isn't exactly a bad thing. Sure you don't make an impression, but you get to observe and take in the surroundings better as you learn what makes what. What makes Booyah Base so fresh, what people act like, how people act during certain times and seasons. It's all visible from up here.
When Jackson suddenly reacted the way he did, Hanako seemed confused. "What? Did I do something? Is something on me?" she said, looking around before looking back at the male inkling and listen to him try to cover up for himself. Being sheltered for so many years has lead Hanako to be a bit..... dense, when it came to these kinds of signals. Were it more obvious, she'd be able to figure it out. But luckily for Jack, she didn't figure it out. Hanako did however wonder what the competitive inkbrush users would be like, in her imagination she was thinking they'd be fast, swift, and graceful with their strokes. But in reality they'd probably be a dive in and be messy kind of tactic. Regardless, the look of wonder was on her face. Nodding a bit, and having a shy sound to her voice, she spoke "O-oh. Right. It took a while to get used to, but I've gotten ok. I-I'm kinda good at drawing birds." she said, shy and quiet in voice since she was unsure if Jackson would label it as cool or lame.

Jackson stepped out of his thoughts and back to the present. A tendency to get self-conscious of *just* the little things made him a bit jumpy at times. He was relieved Hanako reacted the way she did, it was a lot of pressure off of his mind. At the same time, though, he felt... disappointment? What? No, couldn't be... He turned directly to her now, taking a more relaxed stance and making sure to maintain normal person eye contact.
"Birds, huh?" Jackson imagined a big ink drawing of a little sparrow and smiled. "So it's like a big ink sketch? That sounds... like... some professional stuff. With a big brush like that, I mean." He moved his hands like he was holding one of them. "It's amazing what ideas people can come up with when they aren't mixed up in battle. I mean, you know this firsthand, right?" He shrugged approvingly with a grin. "Though you might want to give Turf War a try... on your own time. Call it a hunch, maybe?"

Hanako was confused as to the actions of her company suddenly looking around and acting all weirdly, along with talking all broken up. Even more so than when Hanako gets nervous and shy, but this was strange. Still, she shrugged it off as being part of Jackson's personality as 'sometimes jumpy and can't think straight when acting like that'. Though part of her still thought it was something else.
Going back to the topic at hand, the pale tentacled inkling nodded at the description of her paintings being like 'big ink sketches' as she mainly drew doves more than anything. And a flower here or there too. "Well.... It umm... it does take a while to get used to. When I first tried it I looked silly and it came out wrong. But like with most things, all I needed to do was just try again and eventually got good at it. I still have problems with the signature since it's smaller and more compact...." she said, thinking back on what she can improve on.
But the thought of Turf War? That got her a tad bit scared. "T-turf war? I dunno.... I mean... People seem to be having fun, but I've heard that you can get yelled at sometimes if you don't do good. And I don't want to have to deal with that. What if I fail the team?" Hanako said, obviously spotting the tryhards coming out of the tower more than the fun loving players, so she's just had a bad first impression with the teams.
