It'd be only two days since the event that transpired at the Skatepark, but to Vincent, it felt like an eternity. Father had worked xim down to the bone, and that was were it left xim now, sitting on a bench outside of the Arowana Mall, bruises and band-aids covering xis body. The most ugly, noticeable one was right on xis leg, it was a deep shade of purple. Vin, however, was used to it. That didn't exactly mean it hurt any less, though. It just meant he was less scared of the upcoming pain with each step xe took. But xe was not walking right now.
Father sent xim here not as a day off (not ever, after that, never again -- that's what he'd said), but to look at the next weapon xe'd liked to become good with in the Turf War. But Vincent couldn't resist the urge to finally get a few minutes of rest, even though xe knew Father would disapprove. Hissing in a breath, Vincent ran a hand over the large bruise on xis leg, trying in vain to sooth the wounded muscles underneath.
Turf Wars were not fun to xim. In fact, Vincent had rarely expressed interested in them when xe was younger. To xim, it was a responsibility, nothing more, nothing less. And it would continue to be that way, when xe entered Elite territory. Vin closed xis eyes. At least xe wouldn't have to see those two again. Regret stung at xim. Xe shouldn't have been so harsh, or lost xis cool so easily. Xe'd only intended to fool around, xe didn't want to really get angry at them. But xe had, and now instead of two friends, xe'd made two enemies. Perfect. At least the girl that had happened upon them then seemed friendly enough to not go gossiping bad rumors about xim...

The mall never was her favourite hangout, for a number of reasons. For one, the utter humiliation she had faced from the crowds when she had first arrived here; Mar didn't look exactly 'fresh', as they put it, and they made sure she'd never forget it either.
Secondly, crowds in general were never fun for her. She only ever valued them when they were used to blend in; but since people at the mall were usually on the move, Mar wouldn't look particularly natural standing around looking nervous.
Alas, it was all a part of her self-appointed assignment for the day; learning more on the Inkling dress-code, while simultaneously purchasing more outfits to wear. After all, it'd be odd walking around in just one or two sets of clothes, wouldn't it...?
The mimic had her gaze fixed to the ground as she approached the entrance to the mall, intending to do everything in her power to avoid eye contact with anyone. However, she had instead bumped shoulders with a couple of passing Inklings, who had promptly told her to 'watch where you're going'. Muttered apologies aside, the brief unpleasantness at least allowed her to see a familiar face just on one of the outdoor benches.
Immediately the day at the skate park came back. It wasn't exactly pleasant, but that was precisely why Mar promised herself to make things right in the end. Surely this person had cooled off by now, and would be willing to speak with her normally... Right? It seemed to her that something had been bothering xim that day, and a nasty experience like that probably didn't help. All xe needed was a little kindness, and it would be okay.
Shopping would have to wait. With a slight huff, Mar took gentle steps towards Vin, and tried to claim the seat next to him as casually as possible. She had let the moment linger a little too long before finally speaking up. "Oh, um... hello, again!"

Speak of the devil...
Though in this case, it was not the devil Vin spoke of. Instead, it was nothing but an innocent (and to xis knowledge) Inkling girl. Even as Vin's face was cast downward, it wasn't difficult to see her pink hair creep into xis peripheral vision. Blinking, xe slowly mustered up the energy to look her in the eye, but found she was looking off at something else for now. Feeling another stab of guilt, Vin bit xis lower lip, glancing to pick at one of xis band-aids. The silence was broken by the girl a moment later, however, which surprised xim. Stretching xis non-injured leg out, xe acknowledged her. "Hi..."
Frowning, xe looked away again, words spilling out of xis mouth before xe cared to stop and think them over. "Sorry about the other day. I'm not usually like that." Vin gripped at xis knees. "I wasn't even -- to be honest, at first, I really did want to help them, but I guess I just...I let the situation get out of control, and. It shouldn't have," The green inkling stumbled again. "I'm a Carcer. We should be good on the battlefield, and when it comes to manners..."
Trailing off, xe forced ximself to stop there, if only to draw xis breath once more after the fast bout of talking. "...Anyways." Vin was hoping she wouldn't mention the phone call that had happened at the end of the entire mess. "I...didn't catch your name. I'm Vincent, but you can call me Vin."

Well, that was recognizable behaviour. Mar figured she'd either really startled xim, or xe was simply worried that she'd be ready to lay xim out for what happened last time. Whatever the reason, Mar decided to let xim finish before wearing a warm smile; maybe showing xim that she was not angry would ease xis nerves a bit. She debated putting a consoling hand on xis shoulder seeing how distressed xe was, but decided against it for now.
"Oh, no, no, it's okay! No hard feelings." She shook her head slightly. "Nobody holds it against you. These things happen all the time with... Us Inklings." That wasn't too strange a point to bring up, right? Inklings were aware of how aggressive they could get, right? Now she was getting nervous, desperately racking her brain for another sentence to say.
Luckily, Mar was provided the opportunity once Vin had given her xis name. She stumbled over a few words trying to get the sentence started, coming out with a few quiet 'oh's and 'uh's before any coherent word. "My name- m-my name is Mar! It's-it's good to meet you formally, Vin..." She spoke with a shy smile and a nod. That was better.
Hands folded gently in her lap. Mar couldn't help but let her eyes wander over xim at this point, and it didn't take long for her to notice that xe seemed to have been injured. Was that from the threatening voice she'd heard...? Or maybe xe had just taken a terrible few falls from xis skateboard.
No.... No, it had to have been the former. Inklings could sustain a decent amount of physical harm when it came to heights. It would take a greater force than just falling to make bruises like that. Plus, these all looked like they were put there by someone else; she would know this. The sight made her sad and angry at the same time, but she avoided bringing it up directly.
Instead, Mar chose to glance back up at xim with a slight look of concern on her face. "Um," How could she put this? "I was... I was really worried for you. You didn't seem to be in a good mood at all." Her voice was soft, almost soothing in a way. "I have to know... Are you okay...?"

Vincent looked to her, some odd mixture of pleasant surprise and disbelief in xis eyes. Xe wasn't bothered by her nervousness, the fact that she was actually being nice to xim after witnessing what xe considered a terrible outburst was enough to not feel one ounce of irritation at her stuttering. Not that Vin was frequently annoyed by that anyway, in spite of being straight to the point and blunt ximself, xe'd always been understanding of those with shy tendencies. One of xis very few positive traits, xe supposed. Xe tried to return her smile, some of xis teeth peeking out over xis lips. It was weary, but genuine nonetheless, no matter how tired xis eyes were from yesterday's training. "Nice to meet you..."
To be fair, the comment about 'us inklings' was a little odd to hear, but Vin didn't give much thought into it, considering Mar had a bit trouble with wording even when saying 'normal' sentences. Smile falling from xis face, Vin glanced away again, unsure of where to take the conversation from there. Luckily, however, it wasn't up to xim where it went next, as Mar spoke up again, softly questioning xim. Looking up at her, Vincent held that look of shock again. "Huh...? I...yeah, I'm fine." Xe said, putting a hand to the back of xis head. "I-It's just...been hard lately. It's like I'm...falling apart."
Frowning at how pathetic that sounded, Vin grit his teeth behind xis lips, hands balling into small fists. "And everything I do to try to get the stress out just disappoints Father even more." Hanging xis head in shame at the admission that xe couldn't even bring ximself to internalize the pain, and had to take it out on either on ximself, or worse as seen yesterday -- others. Shaking xis head, when xe looked up at Mar again, xe got off the topic.
"But -- that's not even your problem. It's no one's problem, except mine. Just...yeah. That's why...uhm." Teal eyes darting from side to side, xe stopped trying to put in a smooth transition to another subject, and went for it out right. "Uh, what brings you here, Mar?"

"Oh... oh my..."
It sounded to her like xe had a cruel parent? Mar herself never had any definitive parent figures, but she did have very strict trainers. If this 'father' was anything like them, she could definitely understand how difficult this must have been for Vin.
Still, what could she really say to this? No matter how much she wanted to, she couldn't exactly fix the problem for xim. And she wasn't about to relate her own past problems, let alone mention an Octarian upbringing.
Mar could only look at xim with pure sympathy. "I'm... sorry to hear, Vin." She raised her hand momentarily, and hovered it slightly over xis shoulder. Her fingers twitched before she quickly withdrew her hand and shoved it into her lap. "Um... if there's ever anything I can do to help, I'll do what I can, okay? Even if it's just to listen..." Evidently, Vin lacked a proper outlet, and she would gladly offer this to xim.
Though perhaps those offers would go unheard; she could tell from xis sudden topic change that Vin probably didn't want to linger on the subject anymore. She was okay with this, as long as he was comfortable.
Mar let off a quiet sigh; one more of dread than anything. "Well, I was just here to shop... I don't have much gear, so I was going to buy more gear with all of my turf war money." she shrugged a little, turning to face Vin a little more. "But I don't really like doing these sorts of things on my own... Maybe you'd like to join me?" She figured it couldn't hurt to offer; heck, maybe it'd help get xis mind off of things.

It was still hard to get used to the idea that Mar had forgiven xim, let alone be willing to help xim more than she already had. But Vin tried to adapt to it, hoping that xe wouldn't come off as ungrateful in the process, but with how kind she was being, xe didn't think she'd mention it even if she thought of xim that way. "...Thank you." Xe managed nonetheless, before the subject made it's abrupt turn because of xim. At her offer, xe gave a small smile. "Sure. That's why I'm here, too, but I don't mind if we get your gear first."
Bracing ximself, Vincent pushed off from the bench and stood, relieved when there wasn't as much pain as xe'd thought there'd be. Xe was still incredibly sore, however. Waiting for her to stand up with xim, Vincent then began a slow pace towards the direction of the gear stores xe usually visited. There was one good thing about being xis Father's son, xe had a lot of cash to spend.
Curious, the green Inkling looked to Mar, wanting to learn more about her. "What are your weapon preferences?" Vincent was more of a well-rounded player, though xe'd first been trained to be a sniper, and it was normally the position xe was defaulted too on xis teams, though there had been a few exceptions in the past. "And, are you looking to go into the Elite Turf Wars?"

Mar returned with a friendly smile and nod, brushing her lap for a moment before rising up to follow xim. She had slowed a light jog once she was walking right beside xim, folding her hands behind her back. Honestly, this was nice... She had never really gone shopping with others before.
At his inquiry, she had almost jumped. She almost hadn't expected xim to start speaking to her, let alone so suddenly. But nonetheless, she responded.
"Oh, I use mostly shooter types. Though specifically, I really prefer to just use my Octoshot..." she trailed off, taking a second to realize she'd forgotten something. "...R-Replica. The Replica..." Mar had forgotten that Inklings had somehow managed to replicate the main Octoling weapons for use in their turf wars. She wasn't sure whether to feel insulted or surprised, but she was certainly glad that she didn't have to explain herself whenever she was seen carrying it.
"Elite Turf Wars...? Oh, I don't know about that," she glanced away for a moment. "I only moved here a month ago. Right now I'm trying to hone my skills and settle in..." That was only a half-lie. Mar really had been here for one month, but she had specifically avoided staying under the radar of 'fame' so she could complete her work without hassle. "How about you...? I don't think I've ever seen you in battle."

Vincent's hands came to be folded behind xis back as well, mimicking her posture. However, to any on-lookers it was exceedingly clear they were different in personality. Vin walked with purposeful slow steps, posture straightened and regal, while Mar carried herself with a more casual, shy and passive, air. Xe thought little of her pause between the word 'octoshot' and 'replica', as xe had met many that shortened weapon names in conversation for ease. "Hmm. I specialize in charger types for the most part. My preferred weapon is the E-liter 3K -- custom made, of course." Xe responded smoothly, taking a hand out from behind xis back to make a few simple gestures as xe talked.
The information that she was only just settling in surprised xim somewhat, but xe nodded anyway. It made sense that she hadn't seen xim around in Turf Wars, then. "I'll definitely be transferring to Elite when I come of age." Vincent told her.
It was xis responsibility, after all. There was no getting past that. "As for right now...well, my team has a schedule, set times in which we do ranked battles. So that might be why you haven't seen us." Xe explained, nodding xis head. "Typically we meet up on a couple of training days, sometimes, however, to go over strategies."

Mar always did have a klutzier way of walking-- in that she had a tendency to trip over her own feet now and then if she had been nervous. This was proven by the fact that she had done it once already; once she'd finished speaking, she realized she'd fallen behind just a little, and stumbled slightly from trying to catch up to Vin.
Ah... she really needed to get out more.
Regardless of her minor mistakes, Mar listened closely to Vin's words with a slight raise of her eyebrows. "Oh, I see... I-I hear that's a difficult class to master. You must be a great battler." Honestly, she really was impressed; she remembered trying her hand at sniping a long time ago, and needless to say, it didn't turn out too well at all. After that, Mar held charger-users in high regard, considering them some of the bravest people of all. "You'll fit in well in the Elite turf wars."
Mar knew that some teams liked to play competitively, but she had never really gotten the chance to get into the mind of a top player like this. She realized, this could be a good opportunity to learn some valuable information. "...That sounds thorough. You play very competitively, hm?" She nodded. "I respect that. I-it takes a lot of dedication, doesn't it?" From the way xe talked, it sure sounded as though xe took this seriously; more serious than she would have thought at first.

It was not often than xe received a compliment that didn't have some sort of backhanded ulterior motive to it. When Father complimented xim, it was the promise that he would push xim harder the next time they trained. When the press complimented xim, it was to get more views, good ratings, to get xim to open up more when they inevitably asked xim invading questions.
So at Mar's words, xe let a soft, genuine smile come onto xis face. Even if she was only being kind for the sake of it, it...meant something to xim, to have met someone who didn't just want to, for lack of better words, use xim.
"Thank you." Xe told her, for the second time today. "I'm sure you are very skilled as well -- you've got a good head on your shoulders, and a good heart too." Vin smile grew a fraction as xe spoke to her. "It does. I can't quite explain why there is such a powerful draw..." After all, it hadn't been xis own decision that had gotten xim into Turf Wars. It had been xis Father's. Not that Mar needed to know that. "But I guess it's just...in our nature."
With those words said, xe came to a stop for a moment as they reached the first gear store they would be shopping in. It was one of Vincent's less frequented spots, but every now and again they did have good choices, so it was at least worth giving a shot. Xe held open the door for her, nodding a little to signify that she could go in first, and xe would follow behind.
