[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It seemed that, for once, Crow hadn't been dealt the short end of the stick. Ordinarily, he hated to get stuck patrolling; it was uneventful and excruciatingly boring a great majority of the time. Today, however, he'd been tasked with patrolling the surface. It was a nice change of pace, to say the least, and he rather preferred the open space and fresh air above opposed to the dark, dilapidated kettles below.
Nightfall was nearing, and the sky grew darker by the minute, but the surface maintained its appeal, as far as Crow was convinced. As nice as the sun felt upon his skin, he nearly preferred nighttime. There was something about seeing the stars and moon firsthand that had captivated him ever since he was a child. He doubted he would ever tire of the sky.
It would have been wise not to focus on that, however, given that he was supposed to be on the lookout for intruders. He wasn't overly concerned. Languidly, he continued along, kicking occasionally at the rocks and twigs at his feet. Just as he'd predicted, nothing seemed out of place - few were idiotic enough to wander here. In the meantime, Crow found himself enjoying the warm weather and occasional breeze that passed through the valley. It was only a shame he had to wear his uniform for the patrol; it wasn't the most comfortable outfit, after all. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] And I guess it struck a nerve Sent a murmur to my heart [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It wasn't the first time Jo had broken the rules.
Inklings who were not privileged with 'Agent' status were discouraged from going near the Octo Valley. The surface, as barren as it was, was considered the mere shoreline to a sea of danger. Typically, those who valued their lives stayed away from the area.
Jo, however, believed she had no choice in the matter. Her business in the valley had not ended with her dismissal from the military, and nothing could possibly change her mind.
With her, she brought a Carbon Roller. This weapon, and many others like it, were designed for the fun of turf wars; not at all what she was intending to use it for tonight. Though stealing proper equipment was no easy task, and not worth carrying the extra weight. This weapon would do fine, just as it had before.
Suited up with her 'rightfully-earned' gear, Jo snuck around the area and scanned her surroundings through her goggles. She debated to herself as to which kettle she would enter tonight; that is, what ones she had not yet targeted. Of course, they were likely much further away from the entrance itself, and further inspection had spotted an Octoling soldier was making his own rounds on the surface as well.
Figures.
Jo was never a light-footed person; that was just one of the many reasons she was eliminated so quickly from the ranks, and the steel-toed boots she wore were of no help to this at all. Thinking hastily, the Inkling decided it would be best to sneak by once that soldier was not looking. If she happened to be caught, she was confident she could fight back anyways.
Once the opportunity presented itself, Jo attempted to sneak by... | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fate's decided for everyone all my life i have been asking why [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]His mind had long since taken to wandering to things of minimal importance. At this rate, he likely could have laid down and taken a nap without interference, though he doubted his superiors would be overly pleased with him if they happened to catch him in the act. Drawing a deep breath, he tilted his head back and looked at the sky. It wasn't the prettiest sight through his goggles, but it was significantly better than the artificial panels underground. Stars were beginning to appear overhead.
It was then that he heard something several feet behind him. The sound didn't startle him, however, as he assumed it was merely an animal. Regardless, he turned and glanced towards the source of the noise, his expression passive until his gaze fell upon the one standing there - the Inkling standing there, to be exact. Alarm wasn't quite the emotion he felt upon seeing her there. Instead, his features smoothed over with visible surprise and some kind of distaste manifested within him as though he'd happened upon a particularly unsightly insect.
With surprising calm, he turned to face her fully and looked her up and down, making note of the roller in her hands and then the nature of her clothes. He'd recognized them within an instant, of course, but it had become instantly clear to him that the girl before him was no ordinary Agent - if the carbon roller hadn't been enough of an indication, the goggles she wore were, and it was upon glimpsing them that he visibly hesitated, his lips pressing to a thin line and brow furrowing.
Whoever she was, those couldn't have belonged to her.
Reaching for his Octoshot, he tightened his fingers around it and lowered the gun in front of him. "You don't look lost," Crow began lowly, his earlier calm waning in light of his suspicion, "So, tell me - what, exactly, are you doing here?" His eyes narrowed from behind his mask, and when he spoke next, his voice had taken on a more threatening air, "And where did you get those?" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] And I guess it struck a nerve Sent a murmur to my heart [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]An exasperated groan tumbled from her lips. Well, that didn't take long...
As Jo turned to face him as well, her grip on her Roller tightened significantly. A part of her was getting prepared to defend herself, fully believing that this Octoling was about to attack her. Breath hitched, she had gotten ready to reel back...
... But instead of attacking her, he was... interrogating her? She was almost flattered. Obviously she'd made the intimidating impression she'd hoped to make with her get-up. He knew that she was not someone that could be taken down right away, and that was good.
She supposed it couldn't hurt to humour him a little... though just looking at him so close up made her nauseous.
Attempting to keep a calm air about her, Jo lowered her weapon, straightened her stance and gave Crow a painfully irritated look. Her blood was boiling, and the only indicator of this was the heavy sigh she let out. It was a good thing he couldn't see that furious glint in her eye.
"I think we both know that it isn't any of your business," she spoke through clenched teeth, "but by all means, go ahead and press me further. I'm sure it'll go great for you." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fate's decided for everyone all my life i have been asking why [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]There was no way of knowing for sure how she'd respond. Crow braced himself for an attack, and at first, it looked almost as if she did plan to charge him, but hesitated at the sound of his voice. Expectantly, he awaited her response, and though he was unable to see her eyes, her posture was lined with tension, the thin sigh she gave next indicative enough of her annoyance. Evidently she was just as thrilled to see him as he was to see her.
At the sound of her response, however, Crow was taken aback, and for a moment found himself capable of little more than just staring incredulously ahead. He fought the urge to scoff in disbelief. Whether she was incredibly arrogant, foolish, or perhaps a bit of both, there was no telling. Regardless, it was hardly the reply he'd been expecting. He wondered if he'd ever met another Inkling as brash as this one - even a great majority of the Agents he ran into weren't nearly as blunt. His lips twitched, and in spite of himself, annoyance began to manifest within his chest.
"That's adorable," he replied flatly, a cold smile threatening to part his lips. "Doubtless that... toy of yours is a force to be reckoned with," Crow continued in a voice dripping sarcasm, gesturing loosely with his free hand to her Carbon Roller before returning his attention to her face, a calculating way about him, "but I'm afraid you're wrong. You made it my business the second you decided to step foot here - and if I were you, I would be acting with more caution. Unless you came here hoping to be killed, that is, in which case I welcome you to continue."

[attr="class","landfill-link"] And I guess it struck a nerve Sent a murmur to my heart [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Maybe at a time Jo was careful when it came to dealing with Octolings, but by now, she simply preferred to jump without a parachute. Any sense of caution she had in the past developed into recklessness; cockiness, perhaps. She had no doubt in her mind that she could destroy this boy whenever she wanted. Even if he was... somewhat right about her weapon of choice.
And boy, how she wanted strangle him right now.
...No...
Despite his supremely annoying choice of words, Jo's pounding heart felt an inclination to engage... no. To win. She would not waste her physical energy on one snarky Octoling who chose tonight of all nights to graze the surface. If a battle of wits was what he wanted for now, then that was what he was going to get.
Placing her free hand on her hip, Jo clicked her tongue in a disappointed manner. "Took the words right out of my mouth." Jo mocked, flatly yet disdainfully as she gestured briefly towards him.
"So, uh. Real... threatening and all," she shrugged, "but I'm really kinda busy. And honestly? REALLY starting to lose my patience. The way I see it, we can part ways and pretend we never saw each other..."
She leaned in slightly. "...Or I can get another pair of goggles tonight. Sound fair, buddy?" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fate's decided for everyone all my life i have been asking why [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It shouldn't have come as a surprise that she'd no intentions of heeding his words, but he did feel a twinge of annoyance when she responded without even the slightest trace of hesitation, her words precisely as harsh as they'd been a moment ago. As if he was the one inconveniencing her - she seemed to have forgotten the position she was in. Either that, or she knew fully well and simply didn't care. He figured it was the latter.
In the back of his mind, he cursed himself for having wished for things to take a more eventful turn. At least when he'd been stargazing he hadn't had to put up with insolent, moronic Inklings. Most of them weren't nearly as confrontational as her, though - nor were they half as infuriating. Crow had to smother the urge to humble her right then and there, though he figured it wouldn't be long before he was forced to take action. She didn't seem like she'd give up easily.
In the midst of his rapidly growing anger, however, he felt the strangest sort of amusement forming, and at her words, gave a breath of laughter, his lips tugging back into a grin. "And... then what, exactly?" Crow inquired, a condescending way about him. "You expect me to just let you by - without even knowing what it is you plan on doing? That outfit of yours is far from inconspicuous. 'Innocent' isn't the first word to come to mind when I look at you." With an expression of mock pity, he looked her up and down. "You don't strike me as very bright, but that plan is a bit flawed, don't you think?"
Finally, his grin waned, replaced instead by a self-assured smirk, and he tightened his grip around his gun. "I'll admit you're right, though - I doubt threats will do you any good. Perhaps you would benefit more from a demonstration." In spite of the composed manner in which he spoke, his blood was burning. Whatever her intentions, they couldn't have been good - the goggles upon her face were proof enough of that. If simply asking wasn't enough to make her talk, then surely physical coercion was. There was underlying malice in his voice when he continued, "Impress me." | commentary |
