Getting ready today hadn't been the easiest. It was a day off work, and Artemis usually never knew had to spend those. Usually. Now that Crow had entered her life in his own hazardous way more than once now, she did feel a strange need to keep the man on the straight and narrow path of how a soldier should properly behave. Even more concerning was the fact that he'd gotten himself into trouble both times she'd seen him, once with herself, and then once with a stranger that had nearly left him dead. It was concerning, to say the least. [break][break] That's why she had called him a couple of days before, her voice grave and serious. She knew if she didn't act it up, he wouldn't drag his sorry ass over anywhere. And it was going to be worth it to see the look on his face when he realized she didn't have a secret spy mission for him or whatever it was he managed to cook up in that mind of his. After picking out a red dress and getting her make up done, she'd spent a few minutes in the mirror tying and untying her braid, before finally sighing and leaving it undone. It wasn't like she was going to be out for that long anyway. And certainly it didn't matter how she looked around Crow. [break][break] Artemis was neither early nor late, somewhat surprised to find Crow already at the table when she arrived. The woman took in a breath and sat across from him, folding her legs and clearing her throat discreetly. "Crow." She addressed him simply with a nod, giving him a once over. "Have you been keeping out of trouble?"

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fate's decided for everyone all my life i have been asking why [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Crow knew the precise second he arrived at the location Artemis had described to him that something was wrong.
Initially, he assumed it was a mistake on his end. Baffled, he'd checked the address she gave him - sure enough, he was at the right place. But a diner? Thirty seconds into his arrival, he'd received a skeptical look from nearly everyone at the restaurant; he was dressed in full armor, after all, even down to his goggles. Who in their right mind would go out for dinner dressed for battle? Someone who had been... misled, evidently.
Trying to keep a handle on his temper, Crow told himself to wait until she arrived. Surely she would have a reasonable explanation for all of this. Begrudgingly, he'd taken a seat at one of the tables, trying to ignore the stares burning into his back, and slouched forward, tapping his index finger impatiently against his leg.
It felt like an eternity before he finally saw her, though it must have only been a few minutes, and the precise second he glimpsed her, Crow's features warped with disbelief. Shocked into silence, he watched blankly as she approached. She certainly... didn't look dressed for what she'd described to him on the phone. Still, he waited, hoping, praying she'd be able to give him a reasonable explanation.
Expectantly, Crow stared at her when she took a seat, desperately trying to contain his displeasure. A moment or so after she spoke, however, his temper got the better of him, lips parting in disbelief. Pulling his mask off, if only so she could see precisely how upset he was, he leaned in and hissed, "What the hell kind of question is that? Have I been keeping out of trouble?" Incredulous, he continued in a low, albeit harsh, voice, trying for the sake of those around him to keep fairly quiet, "Why, exactly, did you tell me to meet you here?" | commentary |

Keeping a straight face had been difficult from the moment she'd entered the diner, but at the sight of Crow ripping off his mask to reveal the anger underneath, Artemis struggled further. By the time he was done ranting, her lips were twitching with the urge to smile, but the woman was resisting. It didn't last for long - she was overcome with giggles, putting her face into her hand. [break][break] She'd been joking to herself about the spy mission thing - but it seems that was what he'd really thought. And seeing him like this in such a quiet, cozy little place was hilarious. Quickly, she tried to compose herself, putting on a serious face again, though the mirth was still there in her eye. "Well, I see you've got your energy back. That's good." Her shoulders shook again, a snicker leaving her this time, before she silenced her amusement for good. "Forgive me, it's just...for such a temperamental man, you are shockingly naive." Artemis smirked as she picked up the menu, opening it. "That's all I called you here for. To verify that you were healing correctly." [break][break] The woman finally clarified, and though she knew he'd probably storm out of the diner at that, she invited him to join her anyway. "Though I must insist you stay for a meal. This is one of my favorite places. Besides, wouldn't want to cause more of a scene that you already have."

It was very much like Crow to behave with secrecy, and for the most part, it had never bothered Tawny. He had his responsibilities, and given their often grisly nature, it made enough sense for him to keep them under wraps. His visits were predictably unpredictable, but when he neglected to drop by for upwards of a week, she was as antsy as she was livid. When he finally showed himself, riddled with dire injuries no less, it came as no surprise that he chose to downplay that as well - but she wasn't about to let him leave without some... remote supervision. Following his trail from afar was simple enough, thankfully, but she was certain she must have taken a wrong turn when she found herself lead to a diner. A moment was spent in offense upon recalling that he had once again refused her offer of a meal, but the realization wasn't given much further thought as she let herself into the building as discretely as possible. Taking a seat at a table against the wall, she propped her boots up on its surface and ducked behind a menu, amber eyes grazing Crow's face from afar whenever she found it convenient. An unpleasant mixture of impatience and confusion pressed into her mind as he continued to wait there, minutes ticking by without action. Mission, my ass, she thought bitterly, eyes narrowing beneath the rim of her hood. Settling into a slouch over the table's edge, Tawny hunched her shoulders and flicked at the ice cubes in her drink, features set into a scowl. She was moments from confronting Crow when he was joined by a stranger in a red dress. Disbelief passed over her face, lips parting as Crow removed his goggles and addressed the woman - albeit in a blatantly displeased manner. Transfixed by the unfolding of events, Tawny neglected to notice that a waitress had approached until she was prompted to choose an item from the menu. Without looking away from Crow and his strange company, she ushered the employee away with a hissed "Later!"TAGGED: Crow Osiris Artemis peeping tawny

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fate's decided for everyone all my life i have been asking why [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Determined to get an explanation out of her, Crow stared expectantly at her face, his own warped with indignation, until she began to smile - and then laugh, of all things. Momentarily taken aback, the anger upon his face waned and he leaned slightly away from her, looking equal parts confused and surprised, when she managed to collect herself and speak again, her words willing his displeasure to return in an instant. He fought the embarrassment threatening to flush his face with color.
"I'm not the one making a scene," Crow retaliated on a low, harsh breath, "And I'm not naive -- I just assumed you wouldn't be the type of person to lie in order to arrange dinner with someone." His words dripped bitterness.
"I fail to understand why it's even your concern how I'm doing to begin with; if I wanted someone to dote over and worry about my well-being I would have hired a caregiver. The fact that you helped me -- against my will -- doesn't mean anything. Have I not already made it painfully obvious that I want to be left alone? Or do you simply not care?"
He drew a thin breath, his posture lined with tension, and leaned back, crossing his arms snugly over his chest and eyeing Artemis in a critical manner. "And you act as if I'm the infuriating one. At least I don't stalk you -- or trick you into having dinner with me," he retorted hotly, turning his gaze elsewhere. "You don't make any sense." | commentary |

Surprisingly, she only felt herself being the tiniest bit offended, in contrast to their first meeting where he'd questioned her skill. Perhaps she was getting used to his way of...communicating, by now. Even still, she shook her head in disagreement. "I didn't lie to you, really. I only withheld information. It is not my fault you came to such a conclusion." She made a small gesture towards his get-up. They were interrupted for a moment by a waitress approached their table, asking them if they were ready to order and if they would like a drink. "We'd both like some water, thanks." Artemis replied, not asking for Crow's opinion. The waitress nodded and walked off. [break][break] As Crow continued on his rant not long after, Artemis rolled her eyes, glancing at her reflection in the window and using the wasted time to make sure everything was in place. As she finished adjusting her hair. "You're right, Crow, I really couldn't care less about your death wish." The woman said with an audible snark in her voice, though it faded when she continued on. "You don't have to stay you know, if that is what you believe. I am insisting, yes, but not imploring." Artemis raised a brow, taking on a small frown. [break][break] "Now that I am reassured you are healing well, you can leave. Especially if you're going to be such dreadful company." On the inside, she was a little...miffed at his behavior, but she didn't show it. Of course, it would be just her luck that the one person she decided to connect with was not interested in learning more about her at all. With a small smirk, she joked mostly to herself: "Though I think I've had worse when it comes to dates."

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fate's decided for everyone all my life i have been asking why [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]He clenched his jaw, working his mouth in frustration. Artemis' response was predictably irritating, and of course she didn't bother apologizing for the fact that she'd lied to him - or for 'withholding information', as she so eloquently put it. Forcing his attention elsewhere, Crow tried to ignore the occasional curious glances they received - when he happened to meet the stare of one Octoling in particular, he fixed her with a hard glare and she quickly returned her attention to the plate before her.
Stifling a scoff, he grit his teeth as Artemis continued. Perhaps he would leave. Nearly every part of him wanted to, but he felt certain that if he did, she'd merely find another way to meet him later on. Whatever her reasons for pursuing him, he intended to put an end to this, and the only way to do that was to actually talk to her, though it pained him to do so.
A part of him had grown considerably softer at the thought of her when he'd discovered that she was the same girl from his childhood, even if he hated to admit it to himself. Truthfully speaking, he wouldn't want anything to happen to her, though he particularly enjoyed expressing how much he disliked her.
She'd changed significantly, but she was still the same person he'd known as a child - and going through what she had, it hardly surprised him that she was so different. Growing accustomed to this personality of hers was difficult, to say the very least.
He was torn from his thoughts by her voice, at the sound of which he visibly hesitated, then turned to cast her an incredulous stare. The sight of her smirk only furthered his indignation. The incessant teasing, he could handle, but that... He had to stifle the flustered feeling in his chest.
"Don't flatter yourself," he replied irritatedly, eyeing her in a distasteful manner, "If I was going to go on a date with someone, it wouldn't be you - and I wouldn't have to lie to get someone to go out with me, so I'd say I'm already better off than you." | commentary |

Artemis was not quite sure what she had expected to get out of him when it came to that comment - but it certainly wasn't that. She didn't think it'd get that much focus, that he'd write it off with a simple sarcastic laugh. But unfortunately for her, it was pretty much the only thing he addressed. In spite of herself, Artemis felt insecurity curl into her chest at his words. She'd been the one to take things that direction, and yet...well apparently she could not take what she dished out. Artemis felt ashamed for even feeling upset about the subject. [break][break] Well, much to her dismay she always had been...sensitive, when it came to this particular topic. Romance, that is - even simple jokes about it. She thanked her lucky stars that she never did blush easily, so that her embarrassment wasn't easy to spot. The woman did genuinely feel Crow had a point though, which was what made her so regretful. Why'd she even say that...? Visibly tensing, Artemis set her menu down with an audible flap. "I changed my mind. I am not that hungry." [break][break] At least this way, she could save a little bit of her dignity by being the one to leave first. Artemis grabbed her things and stood, feeling silly. If it wasn't obvious she had been hurt it was now, and she worried he would take it the wrong way and only become more repulsed. Maybe it truly was best if she left him alone, that way she would never make such a fool of herself again. Hiding all of this from her expression, she sidestepped out of the booth, avoiding his gaze.

From her secluded corner of the diner, she could barely make out a word of what was spoken by either of them. Tawny saw little more than Crow's frequent grimaces, but his company seemed relaxed enough judging by her body language. She leaned further over the table, straining to hear, and narrowed her eyes in focus as minutes ticked by. As the two talked, she took absent note of Crow's choice in attire - it was predictably drab, but she had difficulty believing even he would present himself so carelessly during what could only be a date. A date gone horribly wrong, evidently. Blinking in surprise as the Octoling in Crow's company haughtily stood, she allowed her shoulders to relax and leaned slightly back, staring ahead as she was given a first look at Artemis' face. She was a looker. Glancing past the woman in disbelief at Crow, an almost offended air about her expression, she pushed herself up out of her chair and allowed her hood to fall back, brushing her tentacles over her shoulder before approaching the stranger at a measured pace. Tawny observed Artemis with a casual elevation of her brow as she came to a stop in her path, propping an elbow against the wall. "Well," she began, voice languid and eyes shifting past Artemis to land upon Crow. "What a pleasant surprise, finding you here... and with company."Her eyes wandered calmly back to Artemis, who she greeted with a coy smirk. "On your way to the lady's room? I was just headed there myself." Cupping the side of her mouth with her free hand, Tawny leaned a bit closer and said in a hushed tone, "But between you and me, your makeup looks fine."TAGGED: Crow Osiris Artemis Operation 'trap crow's date' is a go

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fate's decided for everyone all my life i have been asking why [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Naturally, Crow had been expecting a sarcastic reply of some sort - when his words were met with nothing but silence, however, he hesitated, again bringing his attention to Artemis' face in a curious manner. For some reason, the humor had gone from her expression. She appeared incredibly more tense than she had a moment ago, and when she spoke, setting her menu down on the table, he couldn't help but stare in wordless disbelief.
There wasn't much he could do, it seemed, when she stood and began to leave. He'd absolutely no idea why she was acting in such a way. One moment, she'd been making fun of him, even laughing at him, and the next, she'd gone completely serious, her expression unreadable. It had to have been something he'd said, but he couldn't imagine for the life of him what.
Where at first he'd felt confused, he now felt concerned, though soon after that he scolded himself for even caring. She was the one who'd tricked him into coming to see her, after all, and he didn't care about her one way or another; at least, he didn't want to. Regardless, worry blossomed in his chest, along with the strange urge to pursue her, and though he managed to stifle it for a moment, he eventually gave in, but not before convincing himself it was solely because he wouldn't be able to be rid of his curiosity otherwise.
Just as he stood, however, feeling the stares of their company upon him, he glimpsed Tawny's face precisely as she stepped in front of Artemis, casting a pointed glance his way. Dropping his hands to his sides in disbelief, he stared at her as though he'd seen a ghost, then managed to collect himself enough to feel anger. "Tawny?" came his incredulous response, though he soon fell silent.
Unable to conceal his frustration, he waited until she finished addressing Artemis and then stepped forward to meet them, hissing furiously under his breath, "What the hell are you doing here?" | commentary |

Oh, no. This situation was getting worse by the minute. Of course, Artemis did not think ill of the stranger that apparently seemed to know Crow. It was only...the soldier woman quickly felt she was being through into the spotlight, with the way the other customers of the dinner were starting to stare, and it was mostly at her too - not at the one who had spoken or Crow - why her - [break][break] Sucking in a breath, she clutched her bag tighter, glancing to the side. "Oh, I..." Before she could get a proper response out, Crow was suddenly at her side, calling the stranger Tawny's name in disbelief. Yes, they very clearly knew each other. Oh no. What if they had been something, it would explain Tawny's apparent bitterness towards Crow. And now she thought that her and Crow...anxiety filled up Artemis's entire body and it was all she could do not to start shaking. [break][break] And everyone was still looking. This time, a blush did creep onto her face as she tried helplessly to hide it with one hand, ducking her head and getting more self-conscious by the second. Suddenly every sound was a whisper about her, dressed like that when she has such an ugly face, I don't blame him - "I-I'm, excuse me. I have to go." Teetering on the edge, Artemis brushed past them both, quickly making her way out of the diner and feeling immensely better when she breathed in the air outside, but she knew she would be even more relieved when she was out of eyesight of everyone.
