It was a little odd to have an electrical and mechanical repair shop in the middle of the mall. The sound of a blowtorch or sodering iron wouldn't be what teens want to hear when they're hanging out. Yet considering his expertise in tinkering with objects and his reputation for speedy repairs, the mall was ok with giving out a lease on a slot for his business, even if Barlo was a tad on the young side.

Nevertheless, 'Break and Buy' was open, and Bartholomew was currently sitting on the ground with a blowtorch in hand and a protective mask shielding his face from the sparks that flew as the young inkling welded metal onto someone's weapon for the turf wars. In between each flicker of the flame, he could hear a difference in the normal background noise whereas Barlo would usually hear footsteps all in one go, each drowning out the other, these particular pair of feet were growing ever louder with each step. A customer?

Bartholomew put a pause on his work, setting down the blowtorch and lifting up his mask to glance up at this wanderer. For a moment, he forgot to say anything, just absentmindedly staring at them before realizing he should probably speak first. "Oh, yo. You here to get something fixed? I try not to charge much for turf war weapons, since I know those are my most common commission, but you know, gotta make a living, so sorry if the price is a bit high."

Well wasn't this interesting?
A mechanics shop in Arowana Mall.
Although Kal was happy that there'd be a chance to make some new mechanic friends, they had to admit that there were a few...conflicting emotions.
This guy gets a spot in the mall, has a full blown welder, and seemed like he'd get great business.
Kal on the other hand?
Mats around Turf War spots, hand tools, and barely gets any good business.
If this were a war, Kal would have lost before it began.
"Huh? Oh, no, I'm not here to get a weapon fixed. I actually fix them myself!" There was bountiful pride on their voice. "I'm just checking out this place. Seeing how it runs, y'know?"
They weren't bitter in the slightest, but seeing the store in all it's glory was a little...disheartening.

To be fair to Kal, Barlo was only running this place for about half a year, barely into the lease he made on the place. In the shop, things looked organized enough, save for the pile of tools circling around Bartholomew, the young inkling's workflow depending on them being in arm's reach. The walls were either lined with posters from the arcade he frequented or boards for holding more tools. There was the occasional price reference sheet taped on, letting potential customers what a broken item might run them. There was a counter and a backroom, as every rented space in the mall came with, but from their lack of items occupying their space, it was clear he didn't use them all that much.

"Really?" He spoke with a slow, sluggish tone, and while his interest didn't show externally, it was still there. "Well, I don't to anything special.. if that's what you mean. I just fix things, and if they aren't turf war weapons.. I try to leave them a bit better than they were." With the same urgency as his conversation, Barlo place his blowtorch to the side and slid an arm against the slosher he was currently tinkering with. "One reason is.. pretty sure the people who regulate turf wars would be.. pretty yanked about it. Although, it's mainly.. because if I tried.. I'd probably cover the whole shop with ink. Much better with electronics, but with weapons.. I manage. "

Again, disheartening.
"Me? Weapons. Most people come to me to get their weapons all cleaned out and to make sure nothing's broken, though sometimes people want me to make modifications. Approved ones, mind you.."
Though Kal had to admit, doing non-approved "upgrades" was fun. And even if they never sold those kinda weapons, being able to say "Yeah that Roller has a blaster nozzle on it" was pretty cool in itself.
Taking a few more moments to look around the shop, Kal turned heel back to Bartholomew. "...My name is Kal, by the way. Kalmaroj....just incase you wanted to know..."
And that my friends, was Kal's poor excuse at continuing a conversation.

As the other inkling started to bring up the details of his job, a small, almost unnoticeable smile crept on Barlo's face. He felt an odd sense of serenity while this casual conversation took place. While he led a mostly calm life, something about this one was a different kind of calm, less of a calmness born of inactivity and default, and more that it came from an unexpected pleasantness. Usually,he saw conversations as a means to an end, a way for him to do or get what he wanted, but something felt a bit different.

"Well.. that sounds relaxing. Most people only come to this shop if.. their weapon was really wrecked.. or on the fritz." He noted, and by the looks of the slosher he was tinkering with, that held true. The thing had a hole blow in the side, most likely from overheating, and ink could be seen in several places staining the wiring boards.

"At least people.. are willing to pay for more if.. their gear is in worse.. shape..." He noted, going silent for a moment before continuing the thought, forgetting for a moment to speak. "..but I don't really mind that so.. much. It's a labor of love, so.. more to do is more of a positive.. really."

Looking over at the blow-out spot, Barlo gave a bit of a frown as he noted the ink stains, he'd probably have to personally replace that part. "Kal?" He responded, taking another moment to finish his thought. "My name is Batholomew.. Mainya, or just.. Barlo. If I'm ever stumped.. on a repair.. I'll see if I can find you."

"Yeah, it's chill. You get to meet some cool squids, and others, all the time..."
Now it was Kal's turn to smile.
"If you're serious about seeking me out, I don't have a set place that I run my shop...buuut...." Kal rummaged around in their pockets before pulling out a small business card. "I do have a phone number and a lot of time on my hands!"
The last part shouldn't have sounded as happy as it did, but it was true. They did nothing all day.
As Bartholomew was busy with the broken Slosher, Kal put the card on the nearest table-like structure.
"...Y'know, vinegar and baking soda makes a great cleaner for ink; it's a bit more effective than water in some cases. And I think it's mild enough that if you use a cotton swab you could clean out most of the gunk up in that slosher."
