[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It wasn't all that often that bad things happened right in the streetlights of Spadefish Boulevard. Those looking to stir trouble typically avoided the protective large families that bought up the larger houses in the area. Unlike down in Arrowhead, messing with someone could get you a real bad reputation - the Octolings here weren't as scared to vocalize their complaints or even take matters into their own hands, depending on the offense. But it wasn't a paradise that (people thought) Inkopolis was. There were still shady corners, back alleys if one knew where to look.
Artemis took to visiting these ever once and a while, just to make sure there were no intruders trying to slip past the peaceful air that the main streets had. Eye scanning the surroundings, there didn't seem to be anyone here, and she was about to turn around until she noticed a figure propped up against the wall. At first, she thought it might be a particularly disfigured trash bag, but a second later she realized it was a stranger. In the darkness, she couldn't tell whether it was an Octoling or an Inkling, but she didn't much care, rushing over to the man.
When she turned him over, she was stricken by how familiar his face looked - albeit harder to recognize when he was unconscious because of how the permanent scowl had faded. A gasp escaped her, eyes widening. This was...! The soldier from before! To be honest, she was more shocked by the fact they'd bumped into each other again - than the fact that the Elite Soldier had gotten himself into such a sticky situation. Either way, fear captured her heart for her comrade - whoever had did this to him meant to teach him a lesson almost in the form of torture.
Heartbeat picking up, she moved quickly, shifting the limp body of Crow so he would be on her back. Grabbing at his thighs, she picked him up. His weight wasn't much of a problem for her at the moment, but she wasn't sure how fast she'd be able to move, as to not open his injuries even more. Shaking her head, she channeled her panic into a determination to make sure that the man's life would not end here. She could save him. He may have been misled in their last meeting, but Artemis had seen that he was not all bad. He hadn't deserved this. The injustice made her stomach churn with anger.
Patching her new house guest up had been quite the task, but she felt an enormous relief when she could finally lean back and see that he was still breathing, even after all he'd been through. He was persistent, that was for sure. After the journey home she felt exhausted, but the other soldier occupied her bed, and the thought of crawling in next to him made her grimace and tense.
Not that Crow seemed to be distasteful for a sleeping partner exactly - he hadn't given her much trouble in the care process. But Artemis had a problem with anyone she didn't know in her personal bubble. Especially arrogant men who needed physical teaching to learn basic morals. With a roll of her eyes, she made a make-shift bed on the floor, and slept there without any problems.
She was somewhat worried when she woke up before him, hoping his condition hadn't worsened. Artemis put a hand on his neck to check his pulse. It was stronger than when she'd found him, so she was put at ease again. She wasn't even sure why she worried over him so, when she hardly knew the man and barely tolerated him. But perhaps it was the potential he had shown to her the other day, the promise of at least beginning to understand.
The next minutes, she spent making tea for the both of them. She highly doubted that the male Soldier would be thankful for either his rescue or the drink, no, he was much too prideful for that and she knew it. And bad-mannered. However, it was vital he got something in his hurting system. With a small frown, she realized it was going to get significantly more difficult to take care of him when he awoke, and almost hoped that he wouldn't.
She couldn't even hope that he wouldn't recognize her, the scar across her eye was a dead giveaway and he'd seen her with both her hair down and her mask off. Self consciously, she ran a finger across her own cheek. Artemis knew it wouldn't be good for him to see her...unsightly features, but quickly reassured herself that she didn't give a single care about. As far as she was concerned, he now owed her a debt, and if that debt was having to put up with her lack of beauty, he could take it like a man.
...Looks like the tea is done. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Wakefulness didn't come easily to him. It seemed his body was entirely unwilling to rouse from its unconscious state - whenever he began to stir, he was met with immediate awareness of the severe pain radiating from his injuries, and without resistance he succumbed again to the comfort of oblivion.
During those brief periods of awareness, however, Crow was given bits and pieces of understanding. He remembered being carried - though by who or to where, he'd no way of knowing; he remembered waking in darkness and realizing little more than that he was unfamiliar with whatever room he was in, but fully aware of the fact that someone had brought him there and tended to his injures, even going so far as to lay him down in a surprisingly comfortable bed. He'd quickly fallen unconscious again, though not before feeling peculiarly at ease and, for what seemed like the first time in an eternity, safe.
What had merely been a few hours felt like days, and the next time he began to rouse, it seemed to be for good, though much to his displeasure. Again the pain came rushing back, and he persisted against it with a strained grimace and a harsh exhalation. A white hot ache resonated from his stomach and side, effectively waking him, and he squinted his eyes open to a warm light in an unfamiliar room.
Knitting his brow, he winced, lifting his head slightly; the strain in his expression faltered with visible surprise at the sight of the place. It was... definitely unfamiliar, and though there wasn't much space, there was something oddly homey about it. For a few moments, he merely observed his surroundings in silence, temporarily distracted from his pain by the disorientation he felt. Then, though his eyes nearly grazed over her, he spotted Artemis, and immediately his features multiplied in their incredulity.
Disbelieving, he merely stared at her in silence. Over the course of a few seconds, however, his expression alternated between varying degrees of realization, as if the more he thought about his current position, the more it all made sense -- and yet it didn't make any sense at all. What were the odds that she would be the one to find him? And how did she find him? More importantly, what would have compelled her to help him? The more he followed the train of thought, the more questions he had, but still he said nothing at all, at a complete loss for words. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]As Artemis poured the two cups of the warm liquid, she breathed out, wishing it was cool enough to drink already. She severely needed something to get rid of all over the stress from the eventful night. When she was considering if she should add anything into Crow's tea (namely medicine or something to give it more flavor), Artemis noticed suddenly the disappearance of her guest's deep inhales as he slept. Normally, her house was almost totally silent, so just these few hours were enough for the sound to stick out in her mind.
Turning, she saw him staring at her, his head lifted up the tiniest bit. Blinking, she ran a hand through her hair, and spoke as she went back to the tea. "I don't think I should have to tell you this - but don't try to move too fast. You've got it pretty bad." Closing her eyes, she steeled herself, and then took his cup over to him, setting it on the nightstand. Within her next breath, she let all the information he needed to know out.
"I'll cook you breakfast later and don't say you don't need it, you do. And you won't be able to move anywhere far on your own for a bit. I know you think you can, but you can't. You will pass out. I can move you if you are really desperate to get somewhere, but I know you won't like me carrying you, in fact you're probably pretty embarrassed that I even saved you as is."
Another breath. "No, I'm not going to help you bathe or anything like that unless you need me to but I know even if you do you won't ask. But I will need to take care of your bandages every day. I don't know where the person who attacked you got away to - they were already gone when I found you. For the next week I recommend carrying out your duties with at least one other person as back-up, as they may target you again." There. Finally. She turned away, and walked back to the kitchen, picking up the tea spoon to stir her cup she had left there. A pause ensued.
"Also, I would like to know your full name should I need to report this." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Starting slightly when she turned, he felt suddenly aware of the fact that he was staring - and the fact that she'd seen him staring - and in immediate response, embarrassment welled at his core. Before he could try and remedy the feeling, though, Artemis turned to the counter again and then spoke, sounding entirely collected, as per usual. And here he'd thought he'd never have to hear her, let alone see her, again.
When she started towards him with two cups in hand, he arched an eyebrow, glancing from the tea in her hand and then back to her face again. Crow prepared himself to question her, but before he could get a word out, she continued, and instantly he felt at a loss. Every instance he felt the need to protest, however, she seemed one step ahead, easily predicting what he would have said before he had a chance to say it. He was torn between frustration and surprise.
If her goal had been to silence him, it appeared to be working quite well, because by the time she finished and returned to the kitchen, he was as speechless as ever. Artemis' last request made him hesitate, a look of confusion passing over his face, but he remained silent, eventually allowing his gaze to wander from the back of her head.
He fought the urge to scoff. Whatever the reason she'd helped him, that was her mistake - a little cut wasn't anything he couldn't handle, and he'd be damned if he had to lay around and be nursed back to health by the very same Octoling who had beaten him into submission just a few days ago.
Without a word, he pulled the blankets away, greeted immediately by the sight of his bandaged torso, a faint, yet surprisingly large spot of blood covering his gut. Admittedly, the sight was enough to surprise him at first, but he supposed it only made sense. If the injury had been bad enough to make him pass out, of course it had to have been rather severe, but surely he could at least walk; preferably as far from the soldier's home as he was physically capable.
With visible effort, he lifted his torso up from the bed, propping either of his elbows against it, and was immediately met with an even greater surge of pain than before; he swore harshly, glimpsing the covered wound just long enough to see the bandage darken with fresher blood, and then collapsed against the mattress once more, his breathing heavy and features twisted with a mixture of frustration and discomfort.
Never mind.
Though it took a few moments, he managed to regather his composure, and when he did, he reopened his eyes and stared in a defeated manner at the ceiling. A long silence followed, and then, out of nowhere, he replied, sounding vaguely exasperated, "It's just Crow -- and there's nothing to report, so don't waste your time." He stifled a groan. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The woman felt slightly better in the silence that followed, at the very least she'd said enough to not have him arguing back to her - at least not verbally. She wasn't surprised he wasn't ready to give away his name yet, probably too stunned with the suddenness of the situation to be cooperative. He seemed something like a caged animal, Artemis supposed she couldn't blame him, if she was in the same situation. She, too, did not like having to rely on other's help. Her demeanor softened when she thought of this.
But before she could show any gesture of sympathy, Crow's swearing made her eyes widen and she abandoned her work - turning to find him doing exactly what she'd advised against. Irritation ran up her spine, and an anxious feeling clutched at her heart when she saw new blood seeping out. She threw her hands up, a quiet, but exasperated groan leaving her. Her fingers itched to immediately check on his wounds. Before Artemis could come up with a way to reprimand him however, that didn't involve knocking him out again, he spoke some time later, giving his name.
"Nothing to report?" She quipped, her composure gone for just a moment. It was the first time she'd been angry with him in a heated manner - the last time they met, her rage had been icy and cold. "With your stupidity I think I am soon going to have to report that we've lost an Elite Soldier because he got himself mugged by a cheap thief in an alley. Won't that go over well." She all but stomped over to the bed, hesitating. She was angry, but still needed to exercise the same gentleness as when she was applying the bandages for the first time.
Pulling up a chair, she sat beside him and placed a hand on his stomach - of course not directly by the wound - and not applying any pressure. "Please stay still. I'll tell you if something is going to sting so you can brace yourself." Maybe, she tacked on in the privacy of her own mind, not feeling so sympathetic anymore. She began to undo the bandage on his stomach to clean the wound again. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Given that he'd been so caught up in recovering from his admittedly idiotic attempt, Crow didn't notice Artemis had come to his side until she spoke, and he started at the sound of her voice, turning to look at her with a dismayed blink. For a moment, he was shocked by her audible annoyance, but his surprise was quickly overwhelmed with defensiveness.
"A thief?" he retorted in disbelief, "I wouldn't have let some 'cheap thief' catch me off guard like that - I'm not an idiot, despite what you seem to think." Even if he had just disregarded her cautioning and reopened his wounds as a result. Of course, he neglected to mention that. Skeptical now, he regarded her in a scrutinizing manner through narrowed eyes. "I don't understand why you care. I didn't ask you to do any of this - and I would have been fine if--"
Cutting off when took a seat beside him and began to undo his bandages, he gripped instinctively at her wrist and began in fierce protest, "They're fine; just leave them. I'm not going to bleed to death, for God's sake -- and even if I did, it wouldn't be any of your concern." His expression, while still slightly strained, was as resolute as his gaze, trained firmly upon her face. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]"If you don't want me to think of you as an idiot, stop acting like one." The woman told him bluntly. She'd thought that exercising patience might get through to him, but if anything it only made Crow worse. Upon having her wrist grabbed, Artemis tensed and felt a string inside her snap.
Her patient growing thin (some of this due to the fact that she simply wasn't used to company, especially not bad company), she fixed him with that same cold glare, the one she'd given him upon their first eye contact. "Listen, you ungrateful little manchild."
She snatched her arm away, but leaned in, getting close to his face so her words could not be mistaken. "Your pulse was weak when I found you - I carried you two miles, spent three hours stitching you up, and I slept on the floor just so you could get the rest you needed. If it wasn't my concern before, it fucking is now. Now shut up. I'm cleaning." Undoing the rest of the bandage a bit more forcefully than necessary, she got up to get a set of gloves, and wet a towel. Ringing it out, she headed back over, gritting her teeth at the sight of some of her stitch work undone.
Well. He had done this, not her, and if he didn't bother to ask for sleeping or pain pills, he was just going to have to tough out her replacing them. But that would come later. [attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Perhaps he should have known better than not to expect retaliation; after all, nearly everything he'd seen from her thus far had been unpredictable. When she did respond, however, Crow was nowhere near prepared, and rather than continue to protest, he fell abruptly silent and leaned instinctively back, his eyes widened with surprise. Her words, however, willed disbelief and even some amount of annoyance into his expression. Manchild?
Though effectively silenced for a few moments after she got up and left his side to retrieve supplies, he eventually grimaced after her. If what she said was true, and he couldn't think of why she'd have any reason to lie to him, he couldn't begin to imagine why she'd gone through all of the trouble - and continued to do so. What could she possibly have to gain from any of this?
By the time she returned, he fought a scoff and turned his face away. "... Okay," Crow finally said, an exasperated note in his voice. "I didn't ask for your help, but okay." He pressed his lips to a thin line, furrowing his brow. "Seems a little counterproductive to go through the effort, though, seeing as the last time we met you were trying to kill me." Upon having made the observation, he fell quickly silent while she went about cleaning his injuries, tensing involuntarily. His expression hardened, but he remained quiet. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Artemis wasn't sure if she was exactly shocked, but it was definitely interesting that being forceful seemed to have much more effect on keeping Crow under control than being kind. Making a note of that, she raised a brow at his next words. When he tensed, her movements became more gentle, but her words still held the same prickly tone. "Don't be so dramatic."
Thinking back to what Crow was referring to, she scoffed. "It was barely worthy of being called a 'spar'. Were you injured then, as well?" That was the only explanation she could think of for his rather...lackluster performance. Finishing up washing the wound, she discarded the towel and reached for the first-aid kit that had stayed just by the bed, opening it to receive new bandages. As she went to apply them however, a stray scar on his hip, however minor, caught her eye.
"Hmm." Reaching, she ran her thumb over the small faded thing with a look of concentration on her face, instinctively curious of the story behind it. And this wasn't the only one either - while Crow didn't have anything as serious as the one's on her own face, he'd seen a lot of battle. "Not the first time you've gotten into trouble like this, I take it?" Her voice sounded distant, but then she discarded the thoughts easily, and began to wrap the wound she'd just cleaned. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It was difficult to determine which he found more unpleasant - her ceaseless nagging or the massive wound in his side. He'd have laughed at the thought if doing so wouldn't have exacerbated the aforementioned injury. Before he could give it any further contemplation, though, Artemis spoke again, and her words made him want to groan. He was beginning to recognize a pattern.
"Don't talk to me about dramatic," he retorted, his voice seeping with annoyance, soft though it was. "I'm not the dramatic one here - you're the one constantly making everything a bigger deal than it needs to be. I wouldn't even be here if it weren't for you being so goddamn dramatic."
Satisfied with his response, Crow fell silent again, but only for a moment before she voiced her next observation. As much as the Octoling's insults irked him, he supposed they were a needed distraction. They hadn't any sting, regardless.
"If you mean injured apart from being thrown by you, then no." He sounded bitter. "I wasn't. I was just... tired." It wasn't the best explanation, but it was at least somewhat true, and he'd no intentions of going into detail beyond that.
Unaware of the fact that her attention had been drawn elsewhere until she made a thoughtful noise, Crow arched an eyebrow and looked back at her, his curiosity getting the better of him. When he saw Artemis observing a faded scar on his skin, the irritation upon his face waned, something like self consciousness rising up in its place, though he quickly managed to smooth over the emotion and again turned his face away, frowning more sternly.
"Not hardly," Crow replied sourly. "But most of them don't come as close as this asshole did. That's the fun of it; you might not know you have an enemy until they show up one day and try to kill you." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Quirking a brow, she simply let him have his fun as she finished applying the new bandage, and gave his tummy a soft pat when the work was done. Leaning back and stretching, Artemis appeared to care less about his retorts, but the wheels were turning in her head over them. "Interesting." She commented slowly, getting up, briefly remembering her forgotten tea and going to collect it.
"Projecting onto others, quick temper, source of power comes from high, unstable emotions and determination rather than any real concentration or focus - not to mention you are automatically paranoid that everyone is out to get you -" Rattling off, her hands moved about as she noted all the information right into her brain. "This is precisely why they should have a mental test to get into the militia as well. Although..."
Her words faded in volume, until Crow could no longer hear her, as she was only muttering to herself. Oh, if only she had enough time in the day to work two jobs, then she could set people like Crow straight in both broken limbs and attitudes every day. She took a sip of her drink finally. "At any rate, I'm sure you need something to occupy your time while you're doing nothing but sitting there. Any suggestions?" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]He'd have hoped that would be the end of it. Naturally, though, that wasn't the case. Of what little he knew about Artemis, Crow had observed that she never quite relented when he expected her to; in fact, she tended to take things significantly farther than most people would. Evidently that trait of hers wasn't limited just to physically reprimanding others, judging by the way she began to analyze his behavior practically out of nowhere.
Her observations were met with an incredulous stare. The manner in which she spoke made it seem almost as if she'd rehearsed it all beforehand. Crow felt suddenly indignant, but most of all he felt lost. He could barely process half of the things she'd said; initially, he hadn't even known she was talking about him. In spite of this, he felt the need to defend himself, though no words with which to do so came to mind, leaving him instead in frustrated silence.
Finally, Crow regathered his composure and managed in an irritated voice, "Do me a favor and don't do that - whatever 'that' was - ever again. I could do without the therapy session, thanks." Releasing an exasperated breath, he leaned back and again turned his face away. "And yes, actually. If you could find a gun or a knife or a blunt object to kill me with, I'd be forever in your debt." His tone lacked any of the humor his words might have intended. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]With something between a scoff and a sigh, she rolled her eyes. "Oh, please. If only this were a therapy session, then you'd at least be paying me instead of sitting there on your sorry ass." To be honest, Artemis didn't much care for this back and forth banter, but if it was how he liked to play, it wasn't as if she would let him have the last word. It'd be good for him to learn that there were some people that simply could not be bested unless you bettered yourself first.
His next words did little to impress her, and she gave him a long, disappointed look. "Right. Got it. I'll get you a pacifier, baby boy. Would you like a little bib too?" She told him with a sickeningly sweet tone, the most sarcastic smirk she could manage appearing on her face. "I'll get the one that says 'I love my Mommy.'" Turning away, the smile immediately dropped from her face, and she downed the rest of her tea before quickly rinsing the cup and washing her hands.
Viewing the conversation as now over, she began to get ready to make her quick trip to the store. Pulling her hair back, she went to the mirror, beginning to braid it as she always did. Seeing as she wouldn't be gone for long, she'd probably leave the mask here for now - typically she did not use it when not on patrol. It was meant to intimidate enemies, not spook civilians. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] fall down to your knees and prove to me you're not the same [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]At her response, Crow cast her a skeptical glance, arching an eyebrow. "And here I thought you wanted me to sit on my 'sorry ass'." He scoffed, covering his eyes with his forearm, and rested his head back against the bed. His voice had fallen to an annoyed utterance when he continued, "Believe me, if I had the ability to move, I would. You're the only reason I'm taking up space at your place to begin with."
For several seconds after Artemis spoke again, he remained completely still in disbelief. Eventually her sarcastic words urged him to lift his arm and look at her again, this time with a reproachful expression. Knitting his brow, his lip curled in a distasteful manner and he rolled his eyes. "I'm beginning to think you're enjoying this," was all he said, sounding unimpressed.
Upon glimpsing her tying her tentacles into a braid, he frowned. After a few moments, Crow finally observed, a smug air about him, "You have a hot date waiting for you?" A smile tugged at his lips. "Or are you planning on searching for more damsels in distress?"

[attr="class","landfill-link"] Now there's no holding back I'm making to attack [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Artemis gave little response other than a hum at first, distracted by her current task. After a minute's wait, however, she did address Crow's words with a shrug. "It's not like that's my fault. You're the one that let yourself get caught off guard like that." Her interest in the banter waned from there, as she went about getting ready. Though she did feel a little silly, she did apply her traditional red lipstick, and within a few seconds she could feel eyes on her.
At Crow's comment, she frowned, examining the makeup and then she turned to him, the same smile from before appearing again, perhaps even more faked. "Aw," She started, taking a few steps over to pinch at his cheek, maybe a little harsher than necessary. "Worried that I'll replace you so soon, sweetheart? Gosh, you can get so insecure sometimes."
With that, she groaned and rolled her eyes, heading to the front door. Artemis brought her hand to the doorknob, about to twist it open before she paused, glancing back at him. "I'll be back. If I find you bleeding on my front porch, I will not take you back inside." | commentary |
