[attr="class","landfill-link"] living in a state of dreaming all i really want is to be wonderful [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]If she hadn't known any better, she'd have thought it was the middle of spring, what with how hot the weather was that day, and even though she certainly did know better, given that winter had still yet to pass, the sweat at her brow insisted otherwise.
Pepper didn't much mind it, though - it was difficult to focus on much other than the heat of the battle when she was in a Turf War, never mind the heat of the sun. This time, though, she couldn't help but notice a particular oddity during the match. There were always Inklings she splatted a bit more than others, sometimes to the point that she began to feel guilty for it, but they tended to belong to two distinct groups: those who insisted on targeting her specifically throughout the match, and those who simply didn't have much experience when it came to the sport. This time, though, her crosshairs had fallen repeatedly upon a boy who seemed to insist on minding his own business, just... innocently inking turf.
Every single inch of it, for that matter.
As bad as she felt for targeting him, he was doing a great job of reclaiming territory, and whether he was bothering her or not, it still posed a threat to her team - she comforted herself with the thought that it was the necessary course of action. That's what Percy would have said, anyway.
By the time the match ended, Pepper felt fairly pleased with her performance, but she couldn't shake the nagging sense of guilt she felt, so she decided to do something about it. Couldn't hurt to make some friendly conversation, anyway! Drawing away from the match location, she willed the blue shade to fade from her tentacles to their natural pink hue, adjusting the brim of her hat so as to survey the edge of the woods where they'd been dropped back off; the breeze from the lake a few yards off gave the air a pleasant coolness.
Amber eyes lighting up when she spotted the boy from before off in the distance, she broke apart from her team without a word and started eagerly toward him with a skip in her step, grinning already. When she just a few feet away, she waved her hand and said in a lifted voice, "Hey!" By the time she closed the distance between them, she lowered the hand she'd been waving with and extended it firmly with a smile. "Name's Pepper - it was nice playing with you, dude! No hard feelings, right?" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] it seems we're so invincible the truth is so cold [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Amos had moved here with his family only weeks ago, and he had decided from day one that he really disliked these city Turf Wars.
They were very loud, for one; and a lot of the people he came across were very serious players. In combination with his playstyle, Amos had already been criticized for his weapon of choice. It was widely regarded as being the worst of all for coverage, and this regard was absolutely correct. But he couldn't help the fact that the sound and weight a Blaster carried was somehow soothing to him.
He much preferred this over having a nervous breakdown on the field, anyways.
Shocker, however, that today's battle was no different than any other. Having taken the day to disband from his sister, Audrey, his temporary teammates had all the room they wanted to shout at him. "Get into the front lines!" this, and "Use your bubbler already!" that; but there was still so much territory left untouched. Someone had to cover it, right?
Once it came down to the wire, however, the opposing team's very-tall Charger was too good at picking them off. Not that Amos himself had tried to avoid her, really; all he wanted to do was cover the turf. Needless to say, he was probably the leading cause for a horrible loss in the end. In honesty, he was just glad it was over.
Having disbanded from his very-livid teammates, Amos had sort of, wandered away on his own. Leaned up against whatever wall he could find, hidden away somewhere, in nobody's immediate line of sight, Amos took awhile to tilt his hat down, catch a breather and swim in his own thoughts for a spell.
... promptly broken by somebody chiming in. The boy jumped visibly, letting off a somewhat-startled yelp. His back was pressed straight against the wall, as he looked up to see who had addressed him.
And he did mean up. Because this girl was giant compared to him. If it hadn't been for the height, he may not have recognized her as the very-tall Charger from the previous battle. There were times he never saw her coming, and there were times where he was lost in thought, staring right at her.
And now she... was talking to him. Kindly.
"...Aaauuhh..." Wide green eyes stared her down, and the boy could feel his entire body grow hot with nervousness. It seemed, for the moment, Amos had forgotten how to even speak. | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] living in a state of dreaming all i really want is to be wonderful [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Her optimism regarding the situation didn't wane immediately. In fact, it took her a few seconds to realize that Amos had no plans of collecting himself enough to follow his nervous noise up with anything else - like a coherent greeting, perhaps. When Pepper did realize he was at a complete loss for words, however, she managed to brush off her surprise and clear the silence with some words of her own, scarcely missing a beat beyond some baffled staring, but that didn't last long.
"No need to be shy, man - I don't bite, I swear!" she quickly reassured him, trying to conceal the underlying concern in both her expression and voice with some amusement instead. Surely she hadn't gotten him enough times to make him scared of her -- he was probably just nervous by nature or something.
When the distant sound of some annoyed conversation caught her attention, she hesitated, leaning around the wall Amos had hidden himself behind to peer at where his teammates had gathered, complaining loudly amongst themselves. She blinked in surprise, confused at first, but eventually her smile returned and she continued without returning her gaze to his face, "I guess your team does, though." There was a playful note in her voice again, but this time it was accompanied by some palpable sympathy, "Sucks, dude."
Finally dropping the hand she'd extended, she crossed her arms and rocked back on her heels, looking at him again. "You're pretty good with that blaster, by the way!" she said with a grin, cuffing him lightly on the shoulder. "I couldn't use one of those things to save my life. Can't say I've ever seen someone ink turf as thoroughly as you did, either -- and with a weapon like that! I could learn a thing or two from you!" | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] all i can say... ...is that my life is pretty plain [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]Well, it wasn't the worst-case scenario.
But this was still pretty bad.
Amos was never good at smooth conversations, especially when it came to girls. Part of which was due to Audrey stealing all the attention whenever they were together; which of course, never bothered him. He liked it better when she was there to carry all of the weight of a discussion, while he could find a way to disappear into the background.
This time, however, he was completely alone. Audrey wouldn't return for another half-hour, and Amos had no choice but to fend for himself; as Pepper so playfully emphasized, his teammates sure weren't about to come to his rescue.
Could he just pretend he was ill and run away? That was something people did around here, wasn't it? Though that would mean he'd have to lie, and he was definitely no good at that.
Through this entire thought process, Amos had inadvertently turned his gaze away from Pepper, her words drowned entirely in anxious musings and desperate excuses to leave. He only snapped to attention when he felt her hand come down on his shoulder, and he couldn't help but give off a startled, yet quiet, yelp.
Compliments... she was paying him compliments, now. Oh, as if he couldn't get any more flustered. There was no way she wasn't just being kind to him, right? Now he was too surprised to even think of moving. He simply had to say something to her now.
Face flushed and heart pounding, Amos swallowed before averting his gaze.
"Shoot..." He tipped his hat down shyly. "Y-y'all must have me confused fer another feller... Ah couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with this darn thing... Can't say Ah blame th'group fer gettin' all worked up..."
"Boy, though, if yer aim ain't somethin'..." | commentary |

[attr="class","landfill-link"] living in a state of dreaming all i really want is to be wonderful [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]If she'd felt concerned for his well-being before, the feeling had increased tenfold when he started upon being touched. Combined with the way he appeared to be trying to take up as little space as possible, as if hoping to disappear from sight entirely, it was easy to see he wasn't exactly the most laid back squid around. Of course, she'd no intentions of saying that.
When he spoke, however, Pepper's attention was immediately drawn away from his shyness, focused instead on his accent. Before she could catch herself, her brow lifted in blatant surprise and she blinked, nearly so taken aback that she missed most of what the yellow Inkling had said. Upon realizing she was staring, however, she managed to smooth her expression over and smiled suddenly, looking caught between curiosity and amusement.
"You're not from around here, are you?" she asked abruptly, but the way she said it made it seem less like a question and more like a statement. Obviously he wasn't from around here - she'd never heard anyone talk like that before.
Seeming to realize she'd blatantly disregarded what he'd said, though, she caught herself and grinned proudly, rubbing the back of her neck. "Oh, yeah! You think so? I've been using the charger for as long as I can remember -- it just sorta comes naturally to me now." Dropping her hand back to her side, she waved it dismissively. "Don't worry about your teammates, though; it's not your fault they don't know how to have fun. You did great!"
Curiosity getting the better of her again, she put her hands on her hips and tilted her head. "So, where are you from? And you'd better not say 'Inkopolis'! You don't strike me as a city boy." There was a teasing note in her voice. | commentary |
