The gray, overcast sky was almost as dull and gloomy as the empty bottle of bourbon on my desk. Winter hadn't quite taken it's leave just yet, leaving Inkopolis blanketed in white. If I had as many cases as there was snow falling, I'd be on easy street. Instead, I've got an office near the plaza in a mostly empty building with the equally empty feeling of business being slow. The name's Tracer Mollusk. I'm a private investigator. Says so on my door.
It had been a week since my last client and that meant less money in my pocket. I have a lot of patience, but I also have a lot of bills to pay, and the landlord tends to get cranky when the rent's due. The only thing I was getting accomplished at the rate I was going was sharpening my sleight of hand with the cards. I wasn't much of a gambling squid, but if you think about it, my line of work is always a gamble. It's a dangerous job, but someone's gotta stick their neck out when the law won't...or when my client didn't want the law to solve their problem.
Having enough of the cards, I stood up and pulled the shades up, looking out the window towards the plaza. It was still early and the light was the only thing that broke the dark of my office. The place was as busy as usual. Kids heading to the ring to fight in their turf wars, squids doing a little shopping, and from the looks of it, the café I frequented was getting their morning rush. If things kept up the way they were, I was sure I'd find myself over there with a couple pals of mine by the names of Gin and Tonic.
I lit up a smoke and took a puff while my thoughts drifted like a lost boat at sea before coming to port at the details of my last case. Your typical theft, only the culprit had a knack for covering her tracks. Police were baffled as to who or where that thief was. Sometimes the force wasn't the best at putting lawbreakers to justice and those who knew that had it in their minds that the investigation could use a few extra tentacles.
That's where I came in. Some digging, a nasty walk through the Daggertooth District, and a fist fight that ended with a few well-placed blows later and the culprit was caught and sent off to put on the ol' black n' white stripes. My client got their case closed and I got coins jingling my way, a sound that was music to my ears any time.
My thoughts current pathway came to a detour as I heard the knob of my door turn. The entry swung open and in walked opportunity. She had a face that would make the hearts of most inklings throb.
Most inklings.
