Another Sunday morning, and Lemon Lime was already on his weekly routine. The little Inkling strolled through the busy streets of Inkopolis, hands in his pockets to keep the precious coins of his safe.
It was relatively simple, every week he went to the mall to buy his favorite treat, which were little sugary balls of heaven known as Booyah Bombs. Nothing in this world could induce LL into a state of pure, candied bliss. A packet of them only cost 5 coins of cash, and he earned 15 a week from his allowance.
The mall was only a few blocks away from his family's apartment, so it was a relatively simply walk to and back. But Lemon Lime ALWAYS had to make a few stops first.
First he had to stop by the train station. There he saw the familiar, withered Misses Jelong squirming a tentacle through her coin purse, trying to find enough to get her ticket to visit her grandkids downtown. He stepped next to the register and the long, grumbling queue of people forming behind the aging Jellyfish and handed her 3 of his coins. Like every week, she gasped in surprise, and gave him a little squishy pat on the head. "Be of thanking you dearie," she'd say, "Is always hard to be of remembering the price in the parts of here."
"Ye." Responded Lemon Lime, his small smile unchanging as he scampered out of the train station and back onto his path to the store. 12 cash left.
His next stop was to stop by Salty Sea's Hotdogs, a food stand that stood outside Inkopolis plaza. As he did every week, Lemon Lime stood on his tippy toes and put 5 coins on the counter. The older Inkling running the stand gave him a small smile and cocked an eyebrow at his little green customer. "Paying it forward buddy?"
"Ye." responded Lemon Lime, as he meandered back towards the plaza. That purchase wouldn't pay off until after he left, but a down-on-their-luck friend of his would get a free lunch nonetheless. 8 cash left.
Then it was to the plaza, where Lemon Lime bought a soda from one of the vending machines near Booyah Base. He then wheeled around and counted to 5, seeing a group of eight Inklings walked out of the lobby to the Turf War matches. From the looks and sounds of it, it had been a ranked match, with the green team getting knocked out in Rainmaker.
One of the losing Inklings, a very tall older girl wearing a bandanna sat on the railing. Undaunted, LL walked right up to her and placed the soda on the concrete below her feet. She shot him a curious glance, which he responded with his natural smile before walking away. If she checked the can, she'd see a small message written in green marker on it. "I know you'll do better next time, good luck" along with a small, stylized smiley face.
The soda was 3 cash. 5 exactly left.
As he approached Arowana Mall, he felt his mouth watering. With a pep in his step, LL made his way inside.
The store he was looking for was Kelpfectionary, a candy store of which he was a constant patron. The cashier gave him a knowing look as he placed the packet of Booyah Bombs on the counter. She gave a small chuckle as she asked, "Your Sunday treat Lemon Lime?"
"Ye." He responded with an excited nod. And as soon as that cash register dinged, he took the packet with him out and sat on a nearby bench.
As his hand reached inside, and took out the first urchin-like ball of sweet Nirvana, he felt a tug on his shorts. He looked down and saw a bright blue Inkling with a buck beak smiled up at him.
LL, face unchanging from his small smile, dropped a Booyah Bomb into the little kid's hand.
And the next one who asked, and the one after that. When they stopped coming up to him, he had only one candy left.
Which meant it was time for his last stop.
Leaving the bench and heading towards the mall's salon. Entering the store, he waved to get the receptionist's attention, who looked up from her nails to nod at him. "Your mom and sister are where they usually are Lemon, go ahead in."
Wandering through the bright salon, he walked over to the corner where his sister Fizzy was playing with a few toys that had been put there. His mom was busy styling an older woman's tentacles, so he sat by his sister without a word.
The little squidlet, who had only recently turned two, squealed in delight, and hugged him while making a bubbly little coo. After hugging her back, he produced from his hand the last Booyah Bomb, and watched as she gobbled the treat up, giggling her warbling little laugh all the while. After all, they were her favorite treat too.
Lemon Lime gave a small sigh as she babbled incoherently at him, and shoved her toys into his hands, telling him what he assumed where their names and stories.
He smiled at her, the same smile he had all day. And with a nod he simply responded to her with "Ye."
After a few minutes of playing with his sister, his mom finished her client's tentacle-do and walked over to the two and gave him a small pat on the shoulder and a pinch of his cheek. They talked about Fizzy, dad, and his older brother Cola, and eventually he had to go to do the rest of his day. Turf wars and hanging out and everything. He hugged Fizzy and his mom one more time before he left the mall, hands in his now-empty pockets.
Even though his entire trip had been for naught, he still had his smile set, and a small skip to his step. After all, he thought the same thought he thought every Sunday.
There's always next week.
