[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] Something was going around. [break][break] It was just a tickle in his throat yesterday. Annoying, but he could ignore it. The next day, all his muscles and bones ached, his chest felt tight, his insides roiled and his head hurt so bad it felt like someone lodged a hatchet in his skull. [break][break] But he went to work anyway. [break][break] Yes, it was stupid. He knew it was stupid. He was berating himself for it while he knelt there and scrubbed ink off the sidewalk, his fingers rubbed raw and his chest heaving the occasional cough. He heard on the news yesterday some warnings of an Inkling flu going around- encouragements to go get immunity shots- but he had just ignored it all, as usual. [break][break] He could only imagine how much it was putting a damper on Turf War activity, though. He couldn't help but to notice that the typical crowds around the plaza seemed remarkably thinner today. Were they even running Turf War matches today? How bad was the sickness, anyway? [break][break] He coughed again, feeling liquid gurgling in his lungs. Maybe he should see himself to a doctor and get some antibiotics... after he was done with work, that is. He couldn't afford to call in sick- he'd already taken too many sick days for reasons that didn't involve him hacking up a lung. [break][break] This is the price I pay for lounging around and watching T.V. on days I felt absolutely fine... I knew I'd regret using up all my sick days... [break][break] The situation was made worse by just how much there was to do today. The work just kept piling up. Maybe it was because most of the others on the custodial team had called in sick, leaving all the work to him. Every time he came around a corner, there was even more to do. Trying to steady his breaths, he bent over a messy sidewalk and proceeded to scrub it clean. [break][break] Just four more hours... and I can go home... [break][break] Four more... hours... [break][break] His muscles trembled, and his coughs turned to heaves and wheezing. Everything looked very far away... and every sound came through cotton. He blinked stupidly down at his hands, and they blurred away in a mess of color. [break][break] He didn't remember hitting the ground. [break][break] * * * [break][break] He was... floating? [break][break] No... he was lying down. Something with wheels, moving forward, somewhere. People were talking. He couldn't hear what they were saying. It was somehow too loud and too quiet at once and it all blurred together. [break][break] "...a Turf War janitor. Veteran, by the looks of him. He was alone when someone called 911." [break][break] "Poor guy." [break][break] He looked up and saw a lit-up sign. "Emergency Room". He was... in the hospital? No, he couldn't be here. "...I'm fine..." He attempted to say. Wow. He sounded like a dying cow. "...I need to go back to work..." [break][break] But he found moving was difficult. There was a tube coming out of his arm. No wonder his wrist hurt so bad. [break][break] "Hey, take it easy, bud." Said another voice. Somebody patted his arm. "We'll get you taken care of." [break][break] He forgot what happened next, but the next thing he knew, he was lying in a bed with his back propped up. Alone. There was a blank TV screen on the wall ahead, and there were tubes sticking out of him in places he didn't want to think about. [break][break] ...This is really harming my productivity.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] lifeless words carry on take me home to my heart [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The hospital was a madhouse. Since the early hours of the morning, Mallow had struggled alongside her coworkers to cater to their ever-multiplying patients. Some cases were direr than others - some frighteningly dire - but they'd managed to keep things under control, albeit with great difficulty.
Having already dealt with her fair share of unpleasantness, she felt far from optimistic; the sorry state of her patients seemed to have lead to some haughtiness, and she found herself hoping with each visit that the feistier of them would fall asleep already. Feeling the weight of lethargy hanging over her shoulders, she paused to lean against the hallway wall. Mallow rubbed at her forehead, posture slumped, and let out a hushed breath.
She doubted she would be seeing home anytime soon - not with such a steady influx of patients. Drawing a steady inhalation, she allowed it to fill her lungs fully before pushing herself upright once more. Mallow straightened her clothes and lifted her chin, starting down the hall to the room of her next assigned patient.
Khyran Oisin was his name. They'd identified him not long ago, without the help of any friends or family - he'd come alone and stayed that way. He was in urgent care, having reportedly fainted in a vacant Turf War arena. She'd visited him once or twice now, finding him unconscious both times. She didn't expect for him to wake any time soon, judging by the state he was in.
Stepping quietly into the room, she spared him a glance and focused instead on the clipboard in her hands. Her tired eyes grazed the empty fields, pen hovering just inches away from the paper's surface. As she neared his bedside, she deftly surveyed the machinery positioned there. Marking notes down on the paper, Mallow remained silent in focus, setting the clipboard aside to ensure that the IVs were still in place. | commentary |

[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break]
He teetered on the cusp of consciousness when he heard footsteps entering the room. His pale-silver eye opened a crack and trailed around the room, searching for the source. He soon spotted her- a daffodil-blond, tanned woman stood near his IV rack. His first thought was that he found her pretty. Then he felt embarrassed for thinknig so. He hoped for a moment that she wouldn't even notice he was awake. [break][break]
But... he wasn't really feeling all that awful right now, actually. But maybe it was just the fact that he was probably being pumped full of fluids and medicine. Was it enough to let him leave, though? Plus, the nurse herself looked like she had her hands full. Maybe if he got out of here, that'd be one less person to worry about. [break][break]
"...You look about as tired as I am." He commented, looking over at the nurse's exhausted, drooping eyes. It didn't take him much to infer that the hospital staff was likely overworked due to whatever outbreak Inkopolis was suffering through now. He hated the idea that he was just adding to her plate. "But I feel fine. I think I can go home now. It'd free you up some hands, anyway... then you could go home, too." [break][break]
Come to think of it, he wasn't entirely sure he could walk all the way home like this. Maybe he'd start feeling bad again the moment they took him off these IVs. It was worth a shot to ask, anyway. [break][break]
His eye drifted to the nurse's uniform, searching for a nametag. But his vision was so blurred, it was hard to make anything out.
[break][break] "Uh... who are you?" He asked, probably a bit more bluntly than he intended. "I... don't remember how I got here... I don't even know if my insurance can cover a visit to the E.R..." Maybe it would be more profitable for him to have just been left on the street.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] lifeless words carry on take me home to my heart [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]The sound of a voice at her side, albeit hushed, caused her to start. Glancing in quiet alarm to where Khyran lay, Mallow stared for a long moment before blinking away her surprise, feeling foolish. She relaxed the fingers she'd tightly curled around the clipboard, allowing her shoulders to return to their eased position. A weary smile rose to her lips. "I didn't expect to find you awake so soon," she admitted, pausing as the black Inkling continued. Her brow furrowed somewhat, expression edged with an amused skepticism.
"They told me how you wound up here, you know," Mallow informed him. "I'm glad you're feeling alright, but you also must have felt fine enough to push yourself all the way to work despite being ill - isn't that right?" Despite the pointed nature of her words, her voice was gentle. "Don't worry about bothering us; you're one of many. We'd rather you all left here in good health."
Tucking the clipboard under her arm, she looked on as he spoke again. Her smile returned at Khyran's inquiry, faint though it was. "Mallow Mayhew," she answered, adding with a sympathetic air, "Some kind strangers called us when they found you unconscious in an empty Turf War arena."
It was strange for him to have been alone in such a state - even stranger that no friends had come to visit. He'd clearly suffered many hardships, judging by the scarring on his face and his missing leg. If there was one thing he needed now, it was rest. She only hoped some family of his would arrive within the day; her other patients, at least, were be consoled by the presence of their loved ones.
"Focus on keeping relaxed and healing up, alright?" Mallow suggested, offering a kind smile. "I'm impressed you're awake at all - you'll make a swift recovery if you keep at this pace." | commentary |

[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] He frowned. He hadn’t meant to startle her. [break][break] At her words, he just gave her a weak, guilty smile. “I had to go to work,” he said. “I used up all my sick days.” He knew it was stupid. He knew his boss would understand if he didn’t show up today. In all likelihood he had just made his illness all the more worse, getting out in the sun and attempting heavy manual labor like he was. Well, at least they’d be really in the wrong to fire him while he was in the hospital. Maybe this wasn’t so bad, after all. He could use the “but sir, I was hospitalized!” excuse and stay here as long as he needed to and then some. Yeah… this wasn’t such a bad plan. Well… the costs certainly would be, but … paying to stay here was preferable to going to work at this point. [break][break] He tried to sit up a little straighter, pushing with his bony elbows. But the world spun when he tried. As his senses returned to him, the queasiness followed. He might have gone a few shades paler in the face. The normally bioluminescent spots on his tentacles dimmed significantly. He could see it where one was draped over his shoulder. Wow… I really do look like shit. Feel like it, too. Maybe I’m not as well off as I thought I was. [break][break] “Uh… Mallow. R-right…” He repeated her name, committing it to memory. He liked her name. He hadn’t heard of anyone with a name like that before. He blinked blearily and reaching up his hand to rub at the sweat on his brow. “...How long was I out? Do you know who… called to have me taken in?” He would like to know who to thank, if they left a name. Talking was getting a little harder the more he tried, though. His stomach felt like a hundred writhing eels. “And how long … do you think I’ll be in here for?” He was almost reluctant to know the answer. [break][break] “S-sorry I keep asking questions… you guys must have your hands full…” He said at last, abandoning his effort to sit upright as he slumped against the bed. “Someone else might need you right now, anyway.. I’ll - uh. I’ll be fi-” he swallowed thickly. “Fine…” [break][break] [/div][/div][/div][/div][/div][/div][/font][/div][/div][/div] [attr="class","robot2"] Mallow Mayhew - 0000 words- OOC: khy is a terrible liar [/div][/div] [/div] [newclass=".robot"]max-height:314px;overflow:auto;padding:0px 10px;[/newclass] [newclass=.robot::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb:vertical]height:10px; border:2px solid #f8f8f8; background-color:#505050;[/newclass] [newclass=.robot::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb:horizontal]background-color:#f8f8f8; border:2px solid #f8f8f8;[/newclass] [newclass=.robot::-webkit-scrollbar]width:11px; height:5px;background-color:#505050; border:5px solid #f8f8f8;[/newclass] [googlefont=Oswald] [newclass=".robot2 a"]font-family:raleway;text-transform:uppercase;color:#ffa61a!important;font-size:10px;letter-spacing:1px;-webkit-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -moz-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -o-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -ms-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; transition-delay:0s;[/newclass] [newclass=".robot2 a:hover"]font-family:raleway;text-transform:uppercase;color:#eee;font-size:10px;letter-spacing:1px;-webkit-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -moz-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -o-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -ms-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; transition-delay:0s;[/newclass] [newclass=".robot3 a"]font-family:verdana;text-transform:uppercase;color:#ffa61a!important;font-size:10px;-webkit-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -moz-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -o-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -ms-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; transition-delay:0s;[/newclass] [newclass=".robot3 a:hover"]font-family:verdana;text-transform:uppercase;color:#6c6c6c!important;font-size:10px;-webkit-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -moz-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -o-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; -ms-transition: all .2s ease-in-out .2s; transition-delay:0s;[/newclass] I have no idea what broke my code here

[attr="class","landfill-link"] lifeless words carry on take me home to my heart [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]A sympathetic smile graced her lips at Khyran's sheepish words. "Well, it's a shame your coworkers weren't there with you or we'd have found you sooner." She was surprised he'd managed to hoist himself out of bed at all - but then, he certainly seemed the resolute type. Her benevolent demeanor waned as he struggled to lift himself up further from the bed, a firm concern overtaking her voice as she ushered him, "Don't strain yourself - you need your rest."
She eyed him warily, as if suspicious that he might try to move again Mallow only relaxed when he spoke a second time, seeming to have given up on shifting.
“...How long was I out? Do you know who… called to have me taken in?”
"It's been a few hours now since you arrived," she answered, forehead creasing in thought as she went on, "I wasn't given any names - I assume they were only passing through when they called."
“And how long … do you think I’ll be in here for?”
Rather than respond immediately, she hesitated, eyes lowering to graze the papers in her hand for a moment. They returned promptly enough to his face, where they lingered with an uncertain air. "I can't say for sure," Mallow admitted, absently noting the unusually pale shade of his skin. "Our other patients have been here for days now. If you're lucky, you should be ready to return home in just under a week." Reluctant still to dampen any hopes he might have had, she added with a faint smile, "Everyone heals differently - as long as you don't push yourself, I doubt it will be long."
Her brow furrowed a bit at his weak assurance, and with a minute tilt of her head, she waited for him to finish speaking. Needless to say, she wasn't convinced.
"It's been a busy day," Mallow agreed, voice traced with a sigh, "but there's no use worrying yourself - it won't help you recover any quicker." The words were spoken with a hint of levity. "You're the one I came to check on," she reminded him, sounding vaguely amused. "So... how do you feel now that you're awake?" She was certain she knew the answer, but some additional insight never hurt anyone. | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] Now that he was awake and had his bearings, it was starting to sink in just where he was and what had happened. He sat there in complete silence for what might have been a lot longer than Mallow would have found comfortable or normal. [break][break] Here he was, felled by an illness, back in a hospital. [break][break] He remembered who he was. He tried to wiggle his toes and couldn’t. If he was a normal man with a normal life, he’d be worrying about how long he’d stay in here because he needed to go back to work and his daily life. And there was a part of him that lived there. The drowsy part did, before the rest of him woke up, and realized he wasn’t really whole to begin with. [break][break] The “rest of me” is missing some things. [break][break] He tried to wiggle his toes again, and couldn’t. The sick feeling was just growing in his stomach now. Probably because he was sick, but… there was the memory, too. The memory of being somewhere like this for months. The first month was trying to save his leg. The second was taking it off. The third was figuring out how to be without it. Maybe it was the same hospital, even, but he doubted it. It quickened his pulse. [break][break] “You should be ready to return home in just under a week.” She said. He swallowed thickly. He could do a week. It was a week that he didn’t have to go to work, but… a week here? He tried to keep that serene look on his face, but he couldn’t do that either. The pain, the sick feeling just came harder. [break][break] “S-sorry…” He said, swallowing thickly. “...I… I don’t feel … very good…” He placed a hand to his sweat-slickened forehead. “I… I guess it’s… hitting me…” His voice was tight. “...I… I lied, I feel horrible. I-... I don’t want to be here for a week-... I feel sick-...”

Narrow is the road and too high a price to pay. Loneliness is such a sanctuary.

[attr="class","landfill-link"] lifeless words carry on take me home to my heart [attr="class","landfill-scroll"]It didn't take long to pick up on her patient's distraction. Rather than immediately question him, Mallow looked on in attentive silence, watching his expression shift. The light air that had previously accompanied her gaze faded, overtaken by a look of focused concern. Her brow furrowed.
"Sir," she began, lavender eyes discerningly grazing his features, "is everything alright?" It didn't occur to her that he might have been experiencing trauma from something entirely unrelated to his illness. The paling of his skin had become all too apparent, and with a palpable wariness, Mallow watched him. If his symptoms had returned, she knew fully well there was little to do other than wait for them to run their course. Still, given their severity... She frowned.
When Khyran spoke, her suspicions were confirmed. Placing her clipboard quietly aside, she neared with a few paced steps and told him gently, "Don't worry; it shouldn't last long." She'd seen enough cases of his illness in one day to understand what was happening, but it was never easy to watch someone suffer.
Albeit reluctantly, she paused to bend and retrieve a sick bowl from under the hospital bed before righting herself and placing it carefully at his side. "... Just in case," Mallow explained, adding in an effort to calm his unease, "It'll pass. Take deep breaths." | commentary |

[nospaces] | the monster in your head [break] wont surface again be still my child, wash away the sin |
[attr="class","robot3"] [attr="class","robot"] [break][break] He shut his eye and saw a battlefield. Blood and blisters and fire and ash. The rescue mission that changed everything. Being airlifted from the field, emergency surgery, the pain of scalpel and bonesaw and clamps. [break][break] He opened his eye and saw a hospital not unlike the last. A nurse not unlike the one who tended him day in and day out... but this one, her eyes were lavendar and scarlet and fresh heather. All he remembered of the last were hardened, hollow eyes. [break][break] To his benefit, the nurse was well prepared. Every breath he took just made him feel sicker, until his body gave an involuntary lurch. A bitter taste trickled against his tongue and he tried to swallow it. Which turned out to be a terrible idea. The bedpan soon thereafter found its use, collecting what meager bile trickled into it as poor Khy gave a hollow-sounding gag. There wasn't much in him, and it left a bitter sting in his throat. [break][break] His hand went to his mouth and tried to remove what lingering threads of sick clung there. "S-shit, I'm s-sorry-..." He managed, not able to look the nurse in the eyes. "I'm j-just making everything worse..." He swallowed thickly and looked towards the far wall, his hand still held against his mouth, more out of embarrassment than anything else. [break][break] Despite his illness, despite the fact that he was a janitor earlier today, he wasn't now. His brain was caught in loop. You're a sniper. You were on a search-and-rescue mission. You got your leg blown off in the retrieval of the POW. You were airlifted away. [break][break] "H-he's okay, right? Th-... the victim?" He drew in a deep breath. "...Th... the mission was a success, right? I got him out? He's okay?" What was his name... what was it...? Mayhew...? No, that's the nurse's name... [break][break] Khyran Oisin had no idea what he was saying... and no idea just how close to home that deeper story was for Mallow Mayhew. [break][break]
