Maria is an elite Octoling within the ranks of the Octarian Army. She refuses to wear the typical seaweed indicator of her rank though, because she "refuses to put that slimy sea-snot on her head." She can get away with it because she isn't deployed in battle much. She acts more as a tactician/ambassador for the army due to her charisma. That isn't to say she is a bad battler, though. Any Octarian has to have extensive military training to reach any kind of 'elite' rank. Else wise she does wear the standard octoling armor, sans the face mask when not in battle. Her tentacles are more curled around her face and her ink is blue. Luxuries she is afforded by being high enough in Octoling military that she can get away with it. She stands around 5' 3" but dont let her shorter stature fool you into thinking you can get away with trying to intimidate her.
Octarian higher-ups began to notice an increasing level of Octolings who desert their military posts and default to Inkling society. To try and curb this behavior, they cooperated with Inkopolis to allow Maria to enter the city to "capture dangerous, escaped Octarian criminals". Maria's task is to locate any octolings who have deserted their military posts and bring them back to Octovalley for proper punishment. Her secret, unspoken task is to check in with Octolings currently deployed in Inkopolis on military missions to see how their objectives are coming along. She will report back on their progress. If it is deemed unsatisfactory, or Maria catches a whiff of weakness or unwillingness to complete the given task, Maria will retract the Octoling from the mission.
